Abstract

The quantity of waste generated by households is on the rise, yet the capacity of Kendari City to manage existing waste is diminishing. In order to facilitate the implementation of suitable measures for the processing of waste, it is essential to ensure that the community possesses the requisite competence. The objective of this study is to evaluate the competence of the processing of household waste into organic fertilizer in Kendari City. This study employs a qualitative research methodology. The research informants were selected using the purposive sampling technique, resulting in a total of one informant. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis with the assistance of interview guides created for this purpose. The data were analyzed qualitatively using the theory proposed by Miles & Huberman, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that competence in processing household waste into organic fertilizer in Kendari City is evident in the knowledge, attitudes, and skills possessed by the community in managing household waste into a useful and beneficial product such as organic fertilizer (search and solid). Effective waste management can facilitate a comprehensive and efficient approach that can positively impact the community in terms of health and the environment. Furthermore, it has the potential to serve as a source of income for the community. The processing of organic waste into organic fertilizer comprises six stages: collection and chopping of organic waste, mixing of organic waste into a composter, addition of MOL, closure of the composter, addition of organic waste and a second MOL, and sitting/fermentation of organic waste for 7 to 12 days.

The sampling technique used a proportional random sampling technique. Data collection in the field using survey methods, interviews, and documentation using instruments in the form of questionnaires or questionnaires. Variables in this study, namely the work culture of farmers (variable X) and work productivity of farmers (variable Y). The data were analyzed in a quantitative descriptive way using the class interval formula and the Spearman rank correlation formula with the help of SPSS 26 software. The results showed that the work culture of plasma farmers included togetherness, and work intensity in the production of oil palm farming at PT Sultra Perima Lestari was in the high category. The work productivity of plasma farmers includes quality of work, quantity of work, and timeliness of work in the production of oil palm farming at PT Sultra Perima Lestari is in the high category. Work culture with plasma farmers' work productivity has a significant relationship with a value of 0.491 ≥ r table 0.26, meaning it is quite close and the sig value of 0.00 is smaller than the significance level at the α level of 0.05.

Abstract

Thematic KKN activities carried out in Abeko Village, Ranomeeto Barat District, South Konawe Regency, focused on technical guidance on making compost for peri-urban communities. This program aims to improve community skills and knowledge in processing organic waste into environmentally friendly and economical compost. This activity is in line with efforts to support government programs in realizing sustainable agriculture and reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers that can damage the soil in the long term. The evaluation results showed that this training was able to improve the understanding and skills of participants, as evidenced by their success in making compost piles that met standards. In addition, participants were also able to identify organic materials available in the surrounding environment, such as plant residues and livestock manure, and understand how to maintain temperature and humidity during the fermentation process.
