Abstract

Case of COVID-19 reinfection are related to immune factors in patients who have recovered by the natural course of the infecting pathogen. However, the chance of COVID-19 reinfection are still not well established. This review aimed to discuss about reinfection-related studies, including causes and clinical manifestations, and reinfection management. Reinfection happens when a patient is infected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which has a different genome from previous infection. Although the comparison of clinical manifestation between reinfection and the previous infection is not clear, it is believed that vulnerable populations may have worse outcomes. Vaccination is the main option to reduce the severity of reinfection. Further studies are needed to understand the mechanisms and management of COVID-19 reinfection. Thus, the development of COVID-19 treatment and vaccine can be more effective.

Abstract

Preeclampsia is a condition of increased blood pressure accompanied by proteinuria during pregnancy. Preeclampsia is one of the causes of maternal and fetal death. Efforts to reduce the incidence of preeclampsia are one of the efforts to reduce maternal mortality, one of which is by knowing the characteristics of preeclampsia patients to plan to overcome the risk of preeclampsia in the future. This study aims to determine the characteristics of preeclampsia patients at Wonogiri Regional Hospital dr. Soediran Mangun Soemarso, Wonogiri, Central Java. This research was conducted in a retrospective cross-sectional manner on the medical records of preeclampsia patients in Wonogiri Regional Hospital dr. Soediran Mangun Soemarso, Wonogiri, Central Java during 2019-2022. Sampling was carried out using a purposive sampling method among pregnant women who gave birth in the hospital from November 2021 – Januari 2022. A total of 106 medical record data from pregnant women were obtained in this study. The average age of pregnant women in this study was 31.37 ± 6.72 years with the majority aged 20 – 35 years with a history of giving birth more than twice. The majority of preeclampsia patients at Wonogiri Regional Hospital were severe preeclampsia patients (53.8%). A total of 59 pregnant women gave birth using the vaginal delivery method and 47 pregnant women gave birth using the cesarean method.   Maternal age and pregnancy history are factors related to the risk of preeclampsia which can influence the mother's delivery method. Further research is needed on risk factors for preeclampsia in a wider population so as to improve the health of mothers and babies during pregnancy

Abstract

Introduction: Butterfly pea flowers (Clitoria ternatea L.) currently popular in society as high-antioxidant supplement. One of the organs affected by aging is the brain. D-galactose is a compound that is widely used for induction of aging in animal studies. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of butterfly pea flower tea on changes in brain weight in mice induced by D-galactose. Method: 24 rats were divided into four groups consisting of control, groups with 1%, 5%, and 10% butterfly pea flower tea intervention after being induced by aging for 6 weeks. The brain organs were then weighed to assess changes in each group. Result: There was an increase in body weight but no significant differences between each group either before or after the intervention. No significant differences were found in the average brain weight of each group, with the brain weight of the P3 group being lower than that of the other intervention groups. There is a positive correlation between body weight and brain weight. Conclusion: Although the butterfly pea flower has no statistically significant effect, at concentrations of 1% and 10% it can have an effect on brain weight after induction of aging by D-galactose.

Abstract

Background: Although hip fractures are common among the elderly population, there are still limited studies on neck-trochanteric fractures, one of the less common types of hip fractures. This study aims to describe the characteristics of patients and their management in patients with neck trochanteric fractures. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study analyzed medical records of patients aged >18 years with trochanteric fractures from a tertiary hospital in Central Java, Indonesia, between January and December 2021. Fracture types were identified and classified using the Garden, Pauwels, and AO/OTA classifications.  Demographic data, risk factors, fracture locations, and treatment types were also collected.  Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 21.0 to describe patient characteristics. Results: The total sample was 77 patients, most were female (n = 55 (71.4%)) and aged > 60 years. More than a third of diagnosed fractures were neck of the femur fractures in 33 patients (42.9%). Among the most common classification types of fractures were Garden Type 3, Pauwels Type 3, and AO/OTA type A1.1. A total of 33 patients (42.9%) underwent open reduction of the fracture with internal fixation. Conclusions: Our findings show that the prevalence of neck-trochanteric fractures mostly occurs in patients > 60 years of age and in females. Although open reduction with internal fixation is generally performed, there are several cases of fractures that are not classifiable due to limited imaging examinations. Further research on a wider population is needed to confirm the findings of this study.

Abstract

Introduction: Stroke patients can develop a risk of depression due to decreased physiological and psychological functions. Management of post-stroke depression is one of the challenges in the care of stroke patients. A religious/spirituality management approach can be an alternative in the management of post-stroke depression. This evidence-based management is to evaluate management options with a religiosity/spirituality approach to reduce the risk of post-stroke depression. Case: A 54-year-old female patient came with her husband with complaints of changes in feelings and emotions, accompanied by difficulty sleeping and headaches. She felt dissatisfied with her religious worship properly. The patient was diagnosed with organic depression due to stroke. Discussion: Three quantitative studies have shown that a religiosity/spirituality approach in the management of post-stroke patients has the effect of reducing depression in patients through increased efficacy and self-acceptance. Based on three qualitative studies, it shows the effect of the religiosity/spirituality approach as a coping mechanism that can reduce depressive symptoms. The lack of quality of the study makes the religiosity/spirituality approach to reduce depression in the management of post-stroke patients need further study regarding its effectiveness and its effect on the wider population. Conclusion: The religiosity/spirituality approach can reduce depression and is suggested as one of the management options for post-stroke patients.

Abstract

Indonesia has the second-highest prevalence of low birth weight (LBW) babies in ASEAN countries. Various factors contribute to this high incidence. This study examined the association between gestational weight gain (GWG), pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), and antenatal care (ANC) visits frequency towards LBW in a region of Indonesia with a high prevalence of LBW. This is an analytical observational study using cross-sectional design with utilizing medical records data, conducted in June-August 2022. We analyzed 78 medical records of pregnant women who gave term-singleton birth. Main independent variables were gestational weight gain, pre-pregnancy BMI, and ANC frequency. Data analysis was performed using statistical package program, including descriptive statistics, bivariate and multivariate analyses to explore associations between those factors and LBW occurrence. The mean of infant birth weight was 3115.4± 465.2 grams. Low birth weight proportion was 11.5%. More than 90% of subjects follow frequency of ANC visits for K1 and K4, but only a third of participants meet K6 ANC visit recommendation. Approximately half of the subjects (48.7%) had inadequate GWG. Bivariate analysis revealed a strong association between insufficient GWG and LBW (OR = 10.4, 95% CI = 1.233–87.74, p=0.013). However, pre-pregnancy BMI and ANC frequency showed no association with LBW. Inadequate gestational weight gain is significantly linked to an elevated risk of LBW. Emphasizing the appropriate quantity of ANC visits and regular monitoring of maternal weight gain throughout pregnancy is crucial to mitigate the risk of LBW.

Abstract

Metabolic syndrome is one of the major global health problems. Hypertension and hypercholesterolemia are indicators in the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. However, the analysis of the relationship between risk factors for hypercholesterolemia in the hypertensive population needs further study. This study aims to analyze the risk factors for hypercholesterolemia in hypertensive patients. This cross-sectional study was conducted at Depok 2 Community Healthcare Center with a focus on adult hypertensive patients. The results of blood pressure measurements, total cholesterol examinations, and participant characteristics were then analyzed using the Chi-Square test. 117 hypertensive patients were analyzed in this study with the majority being women (60.7%), elderly (70.1%), and household-based occupancy (70.1%). The majority of participants were diagnosed with grade I hypertension (53.8%) and hypercholesterolemia (59%). Women have higher risk of developing hypercholesterolemia than men (OR 3.38 (95% CI 1.555 – 7.361); p = 0.002), and non-household based occupancy were protective factor from hypercholesterolemia (OR 0.327 (95% CI 0.144 – 0.742); p = 0.008). Gender and occupation are risk factors for hypercholesterolemia in the hypertensive population. Education at the household level is needed for early detection of the risk of metabolic syndrome in the general population.

Abstract

Resistant hypertension (RH) is a critical concern due to persistent uncontrolled blood pressure despite multiple medications, and its association with severe cardiovascular and renal complications. This narrative review aims to critically analyze existing research on acupuncture as an adjunctive treatment for RH, synthesizing evidence on its mechanisms and effects on clinical outcomes like blood pressure control and quality of life. A literature search was conducted from April to May 2025 across Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect, using variations of keywords combination: resistant hypertension, acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, management, antihypertension, blood pressure. We found there is limited evidence for acupuncture application for RH management, even application for hypertension has been widely studied. Acupuncture is safety for hypertension management and has limited adverse event. In conclusion, acupuncture is a promising, generally safe complementary treatment for resistant hypertension, offering benefits beyond blood pressure reduction and improving quality of life, particularly for patients facing medication challenges. However, further rigorous, standardized research is needed to fully establish its role alongside conventional therapies.
