Abstract

This study aimed to analyze changes in the agrarian structure in Citaman Village, whether or not capitalists enters the formation of community land, after payment for Environmental Services (PES) mechanism is effective. This research relies on the constructivism paradigm, using qualitative method. The primary data was collected through in-depth interviews and focus groups discussion, with farmer groups, community leaders and related parties. Relevant secondary data was also collected. The results show that: First the PES program which has been running for more than 15 years, has not changed the agrarian structure significantly in Citaman Village. The agricultural land is still dominantly controlled and owned by Citaman Village residents. Second the changes that occurred as a PES program were found in the patterns of agricultural land use. Agricultural land that was originally used for upland rice cultivation or huma is now turned into an agroforestry area.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to examine the main issue that provoke social movement of fishermen in West Sumatra, to identify the related actors, and to analyze the advocacy strategy carried out by fishermen. This research was conducted in July 2019 and took place in two locations, namely the City of Padang and West Pasaman Regency. The study used qualitative approach. From this study, it is revealed that the main issue that provoke social movements in West Sumatra was the issue of Regulation No. 71 of 2016 by the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries related to the prohibition of certain fishing gear. This regulation prohibits the use of 4 mm mesh size of the net and the use of lamps in operating the liftnet which reaches up to 25-30 thousand watts of power. This regulation has created a huge burden to fisherman’s work. The Other issue that is also triggering the movement was the arrestment of 6 fishing boats on June 11, 2016. Meanwhile, the main actors who are directly related to this movement are fishermen who are using liftnet (bagan). These actors can be divided into two main categories, namely movers and "participants". The main tactic used in social movements was demonstration.

Abstract

East Kutai Regency is one of the coastal regencies in East Kalimantan Province. The potential of marine fisheries resources is quite large and has a role in improving the community's economy. Fisheries production in East Kutai Regency is influenced by many factors, including the number of fishermen and the number of ships used. This study was conducted to determine how much influence the variables of the number of fishermen and the number of ships used have on marine fisheries production in East Kutai Regency. The method used is the regression analysis method. The results of the study revealed that, according to the t-test, the number of fishermen variable showed a t-value significantly lower than the critical value, indicating no significant impact on marine fisheries production in East Kutai Regency. Similarly, the number of ships variable also yielded a t-value below the critical threshold, further suggesting its negligible influence on production levels. Additionally, the F-test demonstrated that, when considered together, the number of fishermen and ships had an F-value well below the critical value, reinforcing the conclusion that these factors do not significantly affect marine fisheries production in the region. The implications of these findings suggest that factors such as the number of fishermen and ships may not be as influential in determining marine fisheries production in East Kutai as previously assumed. This could prompt further investigation into other potential variables, such as environmental conditions, technology, or fishing practices, which may have a more substantial impact on production. Policymakers and industry stakeholders may need to consider alternative strategies or focus on different factors to boost marine fisheries productivity in the region.

Abstract

Fishing vessels are generally made using traditional methods that have been passed down from generation to generation. The characteristics of fishing vessels can be determined from the main dimensions of the vessel, the fishing gear used and the fishing area. This study is needed because inappropriate fishing vessel dimensions can affect the seaworthiness of the vessel and operational efficiency, especially in small-scale fisheries. This study aims to evaluate the suitability of the ratio of the main dimensions of the vessel to the types of fishing gear, namely traps and handlines at the Palabuhanratu Archipelago Fisheries Port (PPN). Data in the form of measurements of the length (L), width (B), and height (D) of the vessel were collected in the field, while comparative data were obtained from previous literature. The analysis was carried out by calculating the L/B, L/D, and B/D ratios, then compared with the main dimension ratios of static gear vessels as a reference. The results showed that the L/B ratio of trap vessels ranged from 7.5–10 with an average of 7.93, while handlines were 5–12.5 with an average of 9. The L/D ratios of trap and handlines were respectively 11.5 and 11.83. The B/D ratio of the trap and handline fishing vessels were 1.13-1.63 and 0.57-2.25, respectively. The B/D ratio indicates that there are vessels with values below standard, indicating the potential for less than optimal stability. In general, vessels in PPN Palabuhanratu are still within the standard range, although there are several handline fishing vessels that need more attention regarding their stability design. Improvements in vessel design based on appropriate dimension ratios are expected to increase operational efficiency, safety, and sustaina

Abstract

Abstract: Climate change is a global challenge that has created vulnerabilities for coastal communities, not least for eco-farming pond farmers in Pinrang Regency who are highly dependent on environmental conditions. This research aims to explain the forms of vulnerability experienced by the community of pond farmers in Lanrisang District. Through participant observation research in three villages in Lanrisang, we conducted in-depth interviews with a number of pond farming households which we present ethnographically by looking at three components of vulnerability: exposure, sensitivity and resilience. We found that climate change has led to a 0.5C-1C increase in average annual temperature as well as irregular rainfall patterns. These conditions have resulted in declining pond water quality, which is characterized by changes in salinity, pH, and DO that are not ideal for shrimp and milkfish growth so that posing a risk of failed harvest. In addition, we also found that there are emerging social issues such as competition and theft practices that could pose a security risk. This can reduce income and threaten the productivity of aquaculture. Pond farmers respond to these challenges by finding side jobs or opening businesses, leasing ponds, and converting ponds into agricultural land. We recommend community empowerment policies that focus more on climate resilience and pond farmers' welfare. Keywords: vulnerability;pond;climate change;social problems.

Abstract

This study explores the role of digital communication strategies in strengthening the resilience and post-crisis recovery of coastal communities, with a specific focus on Bontang Kuala, a floating settlement in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach and a case study design, the research examines how localized digital practices support socio-economic adaptation in a vulnerable coastal setting. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observation, and secondary sources, then analyzed thematically using NVivo. Findings reveal that digital platforms particularly WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram have become crucial tools for coordination, economic revitalization, and social solidarity during recovery periods. Community-led digital initiatives, such as online tourism campaigns and crowdfunding, demonstrated the potential of digital media to enhance collective action and restore livelihoods. However, digital inequality persists due to uneven access, literacy gaps, and connectivity limitations, particularly among older fishermen and women entrepreneurs. The study concludes that digital communication functions not merely as a technological solution but as a social mechanism fostering collaborative resilience and adaptive learning. The results offer theoretical contributions to digital resilience communication and practical implications for inclusive digital transformation policies in coastal regions.
