Abstract

Fairy tales shape most girls’ formative years, introducing them to fairies who guide them toward meeting Prince Charming on a white horse, marrying, and living happily ever after. Imperfect, a memoir of self-acceptance written by Meira Anastasia and adapted into a film of the same title, represents a related construction of beauty that parallels Charles Perrault’s fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. The concept of beauty serves as the central element in the fairy tale, revealing similar patterns in both the memoir and its film adaptation. Beauty constructions established in Beauty and the Beast over the past four centuries remain significant for contemporary women. This article examines two key questions: How does beauty adaptation function as world transposition from the fairy tale to reconstruct women’s worlds in Imperfect? What ideological and cultural implications emerge from this adaptation? We apply Linda Hutcheon’s theory of adaptation to address these questions through a multi-perspectival approach. Our findings reveal that the interpellation of beauty construction appears within the intimate emotional narrative mode embedded in the story’s genre. The beauty transposition from the fairy tale reconstructs women’s worlds, moving from Renaissance humanism to postmodernist subjectivism. This study contributes uniquely to adaptation studies by analyzing memoir as source text rather than traditional literary works, demonstrating how Indonesian cultural contexts indigenize European fairy tale beauty standards, and revealing how different media forms create distinct mechanisms of resistance to patriarchal beauty discourse.

Abstract

This study examines Minangkabau culture, which adheres to a matrilineal kinship system, in which women, particularly mothers and wives, are seen as guardians of family honor and stability. This system is often considered a form of superiority in the social structure, but it does not necessarily guarantee the fulfillment of women's rights as free and independent human beings. This study aims to describe in depth the roles, struggles, and self-actualization processes of Minangkabau women facing restrictive cultural norms and relates them to Naomi Wolf's liberal feminist theory. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study analyzes two novels by A. R. Rizal, Perempuan Batih (Women of the Batih) and Limpapeh (Limpapeh), as the primary data sources. In both literary works, female characters are depicted as more dominant in the domestic sphere as mothers and children, yet they carry a significant moral and social burden. They face challenges articulating their thoughts, choices, and aspirations in the public sphere, which tends to be limited by customary values. From Naomi Wolf's perspective, the struggles of Minangkabau women in these novels reflect an effort to liberate themselves from restrictive social constructs. These struggles include seeking education, making personal decisions, and having the courage to voice one's identity and will. This research concludes that while the matrilineal system provides symbolic space for women, inequality in the distribution of power and rights persists. Therefore, critical reflection and cultural transformation are crucial to building substantial gender equality within Minangkabau society.

Abstract

This article aims to reveal the dynamics of desire, trauma, and absurdity in the character Ale through an interdisciplinary approach between Jacques Lacan's psychoanalysis and Jean-Paul Sartre's existentialism. The scope of the study includes narrative and psychological analysis of the main character in the novel Seporsi Mie Ayam Sebelum Mati by Brian Khrisna. The method used is content analysis with close reading techniques on relevant text units. Data were obtained from narrative excerpts, monologues, and dialogues that reflect the psychic structure and existential reflection of the character. The results of the study show that the act of eating chicken noodles is not merely a form of escape, but a symbol of desire born from past trauma (Lacan) and authentic choices in facing the absurdity of life (Sartre). An interesting fact in this finding is that the symbols used by the author in the novel add depth to the meaning as a representation of loss, longing, and the formation of existential meaning. This study confirms that popular fiction can be a medium for reflection on the complexity of the human mind, while also showing the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in contemporary Indonesian literary studies.
