Abstract

This study explores the transformation of Balinese and Indonesian cultural performances through the processes of Disneyfication and spectacle, focusing on three popular case studies: the Kecak dance at Uluwatu Temple, the Devdan Show in Nusa Dua, and the Varuna Show at Bali Safari. Through comparative analysis and the integration of audience reviews, this research examines how traditional rituals are increasingly repackaged as theatrical entertainment designed to appeal to global tourists. The findings reveal a progressive shift from sacred, community-centered expressions to visually driven, commercially oriented performances. While these adaptations enhance the accessibility and visibility of Indonesian culture, they also raise critical questions about authenticity, commodification, and the loss of spiritual depth. The study argues that cultural performances are not only shaped by tradition but are continually reimagined through the dynamics of tourism, technology, and global consumer expectations. This evolution invites reflection on the broader implications of cultural tourism in shaping how heritage is presented, perceived, and preserved in contemporary society.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the role of women in tourism activities in the Kalibukbuk Tourism Village. The role referred to in this research was the role of women entrepreneurs in developing community-based tourism in the Kalibukbuk Tourism Village. This research was conducted in the Kalibukbuk Tourism Village, Buleleng Regency, which had become one of the Tourism Villages. Given that tourism was the main sector of economic support in the province of Bali, tourism could not be separated from the role of women as actors in existing tourism activities. Researchers asked several questions to informants, who included a number of women entrepreneurs and the Head of the Kalibukbuk Tourism Village. The selection of the informants for this research used a purposive sampling method and data validation techniques using triangulation techniques and sources. The results of this study indicated that women in the Kalibukbuk Tourism Village played a very important role in tourism activities in the village. These women entrepreneurs expedited tourism activities in the Kalibukbuk Tourism Village by providing services or goods needed by tourists, such as catering services, souvenirs, and accommodations like hotels, offering tourists a temporary residence while visiting. Directly or indirectly, this contributed to the development of tourism in the Kalibukbuk Tourism Village with the concept of community-based tourism. However, there were several obstacles to its application, such as minimal access to capital, low season, and bad weather.

Abstract

Family communication is a fundamental relational process that shapes emotional well-being, social learning, and individual creativity within households. This study explores how family communication contributes to women’s creative empowerment in Yeh Cani Village, Abiansemal, Badung. Previous research has emphasized mothers’ roles in maintaining family harmony; however, little attention has been given to how broader communication patterns within traditional communities foster women’s creativity. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design guided by Family Communication Patterns Theory and Symbolic Interactionism. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving eight women (aged 25–55) engaged in creative and productive activities. Data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014) interactive model. To ensure trustworthiness, member checking and triangulation of sources were conducted following Lincoln and Guba’s (1985) criteria for qualitative rigor. Findings reveal that open, dialogic communication fosters emotional support, collaboration, and creative initiative among women, whereas hierarchical, gendered communication limits self-expression. Women employ adaptive communication strategies, such as subtle persuasion and strategic timing grounded in Balinese values (rwa bhineda, tri hita karana) to maintain harmony while asserting creative agency. Nonverbal and emotional support (e.g. shared domestic labor and encouragement) emerge as a vital dimension of family interaction that reinforces empowerment. This study concludes that family communication in Balinese society operates as both a cultural system and a relational mechanism for empowerment. Open dialogue and empathetic interaction transform traditional family structures into spaces of creativity, equality, and resilience. By extending established communication theories into a Southeast Asian context, the findings contribute to theoretical understanding of family-based empowerment. Practically, they suggest that community-based gender programs should foster dialogic family communication (through empathy training, participatory dialogue, etc.) in alignment with Balinese local wisdom.

Abstract

The rapid growth of tourism in Bali, one of the world's leading tourist destinations, has contributed to an escalating waste management crisis. This research aims to assess the impact of tourism-related waste generation in Kuta, Seminyak, and Ubud and evaluate the effectiveness of existing waste management policies. This study employs a qualitative research approach, focusing on waste distribution patterns and the tourism sector's contribution to plastic waste. The participants in the study include waste management authorities, tourism-related businesses, and local communities. Data were collected through interviews and field observations to identify key sources of waste and evaluate policy implementation. Data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis to identify recurring issues and challenges. The results indicate that tourism-related businesses, particularly luxury resorts and restaurants, generate over 60% of Bali's plastic waste. Despite efforts such as the 2019 plastic ban, weak enforcement, inadequate infrastructure, and inefficient waste disposal systems continue to cause pollution and landfill overflow. The study highlights critical gaps in waste collection, recycling facilities, and policy enforcement. It suggests that tech-driven waste collection services, large-scale recycling plants, and sustainable product alternatives could offer viable solutions. Additionally, implementing sustainability-focused education programs and community-based initiatives is essential for long-term waste reduction. The research implies that stricter policy enforcement, infrastructure investment, and enhanced collaboration between the government, businesses, and local communities are necessary. Future research should focus on the feasibility of waste-to-energy projects and the impact of sustainable tourism practices on waste management.
