Abstract

The characteristics of urban parks can attract and makes visitors want to stay longer. The long duration of the visit in the urban park can increase visitor’s attitude toward a place. The longer they stay, the stronger the sense of belonging they have in that place. This current study wants to find out how the grouping of visitors in the urban park was based on the duration of the visit and the characteristics of the park. Data collection was carried out by distributing online questionnaires and the data of 211 respondents was processed for this study. Data was processed by explanatory qualitative method, with open coding, axial coding, and selective coding analyses. The result showed that there were three large groups of visitors in the park, who had different level of attitudes toward urban parks, namely relaxation, escape, and audience group. Audience group was assumed having the highest level of attitude toward urban parks than others. In order to increase the duration of the visit, the urban parks require attractions that are in demand by the audience. Keywords: duration of the visit, place characteristics, sense of place, urban parks

Abstract

The existence of landmarks on campus can help students to access campus facilities in supporting formal teaching and learning activities. However, homogeneous planning of landmarks can divert student orientation in accessibility, particularly for freshman. This was partly complained by students such as students of the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia. Therefore, it is prominent to identify the process of recognizing landmarks as well as their attributes and meanings that can strengthen the process of forming cognitive maps. The current study aims to determine the cognitive map differences of freshmen freshmen in ITB who have had prior spatial experience (architecture students) (N=18) and students who have not before (N=20). This qualitative research was conducted by distributing questionnaires to compare student cognitive maps. The results showed that architecture students identify fewer landmarks than non-architecture students. However, architecture students have an appropriate cognitive map, so they are likely not to get lost on campus. Meanwhile, the attributes of the landmarks identified are additional accessories; shape; detail/ornamentation; design style; height; composition; location; material/texture; proportion; singularity; scale; and colour. The meanings of landmarks identified are history, memory, structure, sensation, and emotional feeling. This result is expected to be used as references for designing other ITB campus landmarks.

Abstract

The provision of urban green areas, especially urban parks, has been decreasing as higher demand for public facilities in the city. Urban parks, however, provide many benefits for surrounding residents that require effort to sustain them. The current study wants to identify how grouping (typology) of urban parks was based on visitor’s attitudes toward urban parks (sense of place). The data were collected online from the questionnaire, and the data of 211 respondents were collected. The data were then processed quantitatively by open coding, axial coding, and selective coding analyses. The result shows that there were two groups of urban parks based on visitor’s attitudes; they are restorative parks and forest parks. The restorative park can provide restoration benefits for daily visitors, while forest parks can provide not only restoration effects but also visitor’s hobby activities. Based on the duration of the visit to those parks, the level of visitor’s sense of place in the forest park is higher than in the restorative park. The role of the architect and urban planner is needed to design urban parks that can develop visitor’s sense of place, such as providing a place for attraction, physical activity, walking, photography, relaxation, and enjoy the atmosphere.

Abstract

Urban parks are public recreational facilities that can provide many benefits, reducing stress from fatigue. However, some urban parks are not frequently visited because it feels very dark inside so that many parks are unkempt and empty of visitors. This study aims to determine how the comparison of park visitors' perceptions at different levels of closure based on the sense of security and restoration they received. This research is experimental in nature, so respondents are asked to rate several edited photos to determine the optimal combination of closure. Data was collected by distributing questionnaires online for two weeks (N = 272). Furthermore, the data were processed through the ANOVA test to see which combination of enclosure was rated the highest and the lowest based on perceived savety and restoration. The results show that visitors’ perceived safety can be achieved by applying a combination of closeness 8 (high density, far position, medium scale (6 meters)) and 9 (medium density, close position, high scale (9 meters)), while visitors’ perceived restoration tends to the same and not tied to different combinations of closure. The implementation of this study is how to design the tree enclosure in urban parks to increase the participation of residents visiting the park. Urban parks that are frequently visited will be sustainable in future, so maintaining parks can be started from designing enclosure of parks.

Abstract

In the last decade, the development of new buildings in Mataram University has shown a shift towards contemporary forms and materials which results a quite different facade / appearance from the existing buildings. The situation raises an awareness that if it is allowed to continue, Mataram University as one of the state universities in West Nusa Tenggara will lose its identity. This study aims to examine the characteristics of vernacular and environmentally friendly architecture that can be applied to Mataram University’s building and evaluate it in the old and new buildings. This study uses a qualitative method, by reviewing the literature and evaluating the building based on the criteria obtained. The library building represents the old building and the Fisipol building represents the new building as subjects studied. Data analysis was done by descriptively qualitatively. The results show that the library building and Fisipol meet the same criteria or vernacular architectural characteristics even though visually the buildings look different. However, the library building meets the criteria for environmentally friendly architecture compared to Fisipol building, which is a new building. This study is expected to increase research on vernacular architecture as the identity of new campuses in Indonesia. This research still has many shortcomings, therefore it requires more similar studies in the future.

Abstract

Humans and space, respectively, were subjects and objects that bind each other since humans need shelter. A space could only be identified as a place when humans gave meaning to it. Previous research related to space conceptions and users' needs was still being carried out. This study aims to identify categories of space that were fun and scary by analyzing the tendency of the relationship between gender and the user's assessment of space. The study used a qualitative method with a grounded theory. Data from respondents (N=124) were collected and analyzed by open, axial, and selective coding. The results show four office perceptions based on gender: men's perceptions, women's perceptions, approval perception, and different perceptions. Men tend to perceive the room by judging human behavior, while women's perception tends to assume from the utility. There are several spatial assessment categories: function, environment, behavior, space, and utility. These categories are the factors that determine whether the space is fun or scary. The findings of this study are likely to be used in a design, particularly for office space, to make that environment more productive at work.

Abstract

Personal space (proxemics) in public spaces should be considered essential to keeping the personal area separate from others. Meanwhile, privatization in public space will divide the area into small personal spaces due to the unclear form of territory in personal spaces. This study will identify and reveal the pattern of visitors’ territory transformation based on visitors’ activities in Lapangan Gasibu, Bandung. The data will be collected through observation and a survey on a weekday (Thursday) and weekend (Saturday). Then, the data will be analyzed using a descriptive analysis method based on mapping activities in the area. The result shows three transformations of spaces based on visitors’ activities and territories in Lapangan Gasibu. The pattern of transformation shows some areas of territorial spaces with unclear protection but need to avoid personal conflicts and some shared areas with low protection of territories. Thus, the thoughtful design of public spaces and physical facilities should be taken into consideration. This result is expected to be taken as a design reference for designing and creating comfortable public spaces that meet the need for personal spaces and activities.
