Abstract

Islamic Capital Market and Islamic Bonds: Pillars of Halal Investment in the Modern Era Abstract This study aims to examine the growth of the Islamic capital market in Indonesia, with a particular focus on the strategic role of Islamic bonds (sukuk) as an alternative halal investment and a financing instrument for sustainable development. The background of this study is driven by the increasing awareness of the Muslim community regarding the importance of investments that comply with Sharia principles, along with the development of Sharia-based financial instruments such as the Islamic capital market and sukuk. Using a literature review method, this study analyzes various theories of Islamic finance, market regulations, statistics on the growth of Sharia-compliant investors, and digital innovations in Islamic investment services. The findings indicate that sukuk play an important role in supporting infrastructure development and strengthening the green economy through the issuance of green sukuk. In addition to providing stable returns that comply with Sharia principles, sukuk also expand financial inclusion and reduce dependence on conventional financing. However, the main challenges remain the low level of Islamic financial literacy and the suboptimal liquidity of the secondary sukuk market. This study concludes that strengthening regulations, digitalizing services, and enhancing education and literacy in Islamic finance are strategic steps to maximize the potential of sukuk as instruments for investment and development. Future research is recommended to explore the effectiveness of digitalization in expanding Islamic financial inclusion and the tangible impacts of green sukuk on sustainable development projects.

Abstract

Islamic digital wallets require distinct scholarly attention from conventional digital wallets because their adoption is not only shaped by technological convenience, but also by religious values, Sharia compliance, and users’ perceptions of Islamic financial practices. However, empirical studies on Islamic e-wallet adoption remain limited, particularly those integrating by integrating the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), and religiosity among Muslim youth in urban Indonesia. This research examines the factors that influence the intention of urban Muslim youth to use Islamic digital wallets. Using a quantitative methodology, the study collected data from 100 respondents through purposive sampling. Muslim Generation Z users of Islamic e-wallets in Surabaya City were specifically targeted via an online survey. Data analysis was conducted with multiple linear regression in SPSS Version 29. The results reveal that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, religiosity, attitude toward behavior, and perceived behavioral control have a significant and positive effect on the intention to use Islamic e-wallets, while subjective norm shows a significant negative effect on adoption intention. The study asserts that Islamic digital wallet adoption should be understood as a multidimensional phenomenon that combines digital service quality, behavioral intention, and faith-based financial values, with broader implications for strengthening Islamic digital finance and advancing inclusive Sharia-compliant financial services.

Abstract

This study analyzes the role of collateral quality in the settlement of non-performing financing at Bank NTB Syariah. The study is motivated by the importance of collateral as a risk mitigation instrument in Islamic banking, which plays a crucial role in determining the success of financing recovery. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation involving financing officers and risk management staff and were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings show that collateral quality significantly influences the effectiveness of non-performing financing settlement. High-quality collateral characterized by clear legal certainty, complete documentation, stable value, and high liquidity can accelerate the settlement process and reduce losses, while weak collateral tends to slow down liquidation and increase financing risk. Several obstacles were identified, including incomplete legal documents, ownership disputes, declining asset values, low market demand for certain assets, and limited collateral appraisal capability. The bank addresses these issues through improved verification processes, inter-unit coordination, periodic valuation, prioritization of restructuring before collateral execution, and staff training. This study concludes that effective collateral quality management is essential to optimize non-performing financing settlement and maintain financing risk stability in Islamic banking.

Abstract

Despite extensive literature on external debt and economic growth, the fiscal burden of multilateral debt service and its interaction with Islamic governance principles and multilateral development bank alignment remain empirically underexplored among Organization of Islamic Cooperation member states. This study examines the impact of multilateral debt service on GDP per capita growth across twelve OIC Asia-Pacific member states over 1996 to 2022, focusing on the moderating roles of governance quality, infrastructure investment, technological advancement, and Islamicity Index adherence. Applying System Generalised Method of Moments on an unbalanced panel of 312 country-year observations, results confirm a marginally significant negative short-run effect on growth through productive investment crowding out, with the long-run effect remaining negative and persistent. Infrastructure investment and technological advancement significantly mitigate these effects, while the Islamicity Index produces a marginally significant negative moderatingeffect in both horizons, reflecting structural constraints imposed by the prohibition of riba on conventional debt financing. New Asian Model banks demonstrate the most consistently positive growth outcomes, whereas Islamic-principled banks face persistent challenges reconciling debt obligations with Shariah requirements. These findings call for strategic integration of Shariah-compliant financing instruments, differentiated multilateral development bank engagement, and governance capacity investment across OIC member states

Abstract

The increasing global geopolitical tensions, economic policy uncertainty, oil price volatility, and post-pandemic economic instability have created significant challenges for the Islamic banking industry, particularly in Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries. This study aims to examine the influence of geopolitical risk (GPR), economic policy uncertainty (EPU), world oil prices (WTI), inflation, and economic growth (GDP) on the profitability of Islamic banks measured by Return on Assets (ROA). This research employs a quantitative approach using balanced panel data from 20 Islamic banks across 10 OIC countries during the 2020–2024 period, consisting of 100 observations. Data were collected from annual reports, Bloomberg, World Bank, U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), Caldara and Iacoviello’s GPR Index, and Baker et al.’s EPU Index. The analysis method uses panel data regression through Common Effect Model (CEM), Fixed Effect Model (FEM), and Random Effect Model (REM), with model selection conducted using Chow, Hausman, and Lagrange Multiplier tests. The results show that REM is the most appropriate model. Geopolitical risk and inflation have a positive and significant effect on ROA, while world oil prices negatively and significantly affect ROA. Meanwhile, EPU and GDP growth do not significantly influence Islamic bank profitability. This study implies that Islamic banking demonstrates relatively strong resilience against global uncertainty due to its asset-backed financing and risk-sharing principles, thereby strengthening the role of Islamic finance as a stabilizing force in the financial system of OIC countries.

Abstract

Background: The development of digital monetary systems has posed serious challenges to Islamic financial principles, particularly in the context of the use of fiat money and the emergence of crypto assets. Paper money without real value backing tends to cause economic instability and violations of maqashid al-shariah, particularly in the aspect of hifz al-mal (protection of wealth). On the other hand, cryptocurrencies and Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) offer potential as alternative instruments, yet they still pose significant Shariah risks. This study aims to evaluate contemporary monetary instruments within the framework of maqashid al-shariah to assess the extent to which they fulfill the principles of justice, public interest, and the protection of the economic value of the ummah. Method: The method employed is qualitative research with a normative-theoretical approach. Data were collected through a literature review of classical maqashid texts (al-Ghazali, al-Shatibi, Ibn Ashur), DSN-MUI fatwas, central bank reports, and digital asset whitepapers. The analytical techniques employed include content analysis of primary and secondary documents, as well as critical discourse analysis to examine dominant narratives within the current financial system. Results: The research findings indicate that the fiat money system possesses structural weaknesses that potentially violate the maqashid. Cryptocurrencies and CBDCs have the potential to fill this gap if designed in accordance with Shariah principles. However, this revised article emphasizes the need for criticism regarding the potential for abuse of state power and mass surveillance in the implementation of CBDCs, which may conflict with other maqashid such as hifz al-nafs (protection of life) and hifz al-hurriyah (protection of freedom). A maqashid-based evaluation has proven effective in assessing the alignment of digital monetary instruments with Islamic values. Conclusion: This study contributes to the development of a maqashid-based evaluative framework for digital financial innovations. Collective ijtihad and synergy between scholars and technologists are required to establish a just and sustainable Islamic monetary system.
