Abstract

This research investigates the use of poster making to teach social justice issues to undergraduate students of Law and Criminology at a private Islamic university situated in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. Adopting a qualitative case study approach, the study focused on 54 students and their creation of posters on human trafficking, corruption, and cyber crimes. Data were gathered through a peer-assessment rubric with five major indicators: poster appeal, graphic support, slogan, delivery, and time management. Findings revealed that students’s scores for time management (M = 4.06) were the highest and for slogan writing (M = 3.69) were the lowest, suggesting that students were more proficient in collaboration than in persuasive expression. Poster qualitative analysis highlighted the students’ perception of injustice and their call to action through the use of symbolic and powerful imagery of chains, blindfolds, cuts of striking women in red, and simplistic, yet evocative, text. These elements illustrated a heightened sense of awareness, ethical reasoning, and empathy. The results highlight the feasibility of incorporating poster making as a form of instructional practice in social justice pedagogy in law and criminology alongside other non-humanities programs within Islamic universities in Indonesia.

Abstract

Reflective journaling has increasingly been applied as an instructional approach to promote critical awareness in higher education, including in non-language disciplines. This research explores the reflective journals produced by students of the Criminology Department at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Islam Riau, during the even semester of the academic year 2024/2025. The students’ reflections addressed the issue of noise pollution in their immediate environment. The purpose of this study was to analyze students’ levels of critical awareness based on five indicators: issue comprehension, critical reflection, real-life connection, recognition of multiple perspectives, and clarity of expression. A total of fourteen journals were evaluated using a four-point analytic rubric. The results reveal that six journals (43%) reached the “Excellent” level, seven (50%) were classified as “Very Good,” and one (7%) fell into the “Good” category. These findings indicate that most students demonstrated a solid understanding of the topic and were able to establish meaningful links to real-life situations. Nevertheless, limitations were observed in the depth of critical reflection, consideration of diverse perspectives, and clarity of expression, as several journals exhibited only surface-level discussion. In conclusion, the study confirms the effectiveness of reflective writing in fostering critical thinking and civic awareness among non-English department students, while also underscoring the need for systematic instructional support to encourage deeper multi-perspective analysis and more precise academic writing.

Abstract

The purpose of this learning is to explore the application of the educational grammar. Engaging in the pedagogical grammar approach can help students communicate better. Student cognitive memories of the word strengthen their skill. A qualitative methodology was employed for data collection, utilizing observation as the principal tool for evaluating students' competencies. The research concept is based on training programs that motivate students to use English more often. As a result, English became a second language for most students more often in everyday life and in the classroom. The analysis also indicated learners seemed much better able to speak the language when they employed the pedagogical grammar approach. Researchers saw that they were more excited and sure of themselves when they spoke English in both planned and unplanned activities. In short, the pedagogical grammar approach made it easier for students to talk to each other. After receiving this kind of training, the students' eagerness and willingness to use English more frequently and with greater confidence demonstrate its effectiveness. Cognitive processes should involve how individuals perceive, think, and understand the world around them.
