Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is crucial for facilitating the acquisition of language skills. This research aims to identify students' difficulties with vocabulary mastery in English Language Education at the university level. A quantitative research approach was used, focusing on first-semester students in Class A as the research sample and Class B for test trials. The sample consisted of 33 students (13 males and 20 females) from the English Language Education program at FKIP Universitas Islam Riau. The study employed a vocabulary test in multiple-choice format, and simple purposive sampling was used to distribute the test. The test link was shared via the class chairman, and SPSS version 25 was used for data analysis. The research identified students' difficulties in vocabulary mastery through their test results. The results indicated an average student score of 69, categorized as "Good." Specifically, 3 students scored between 86 and 100 ("Excellent"), 16 students scored between 66 and 85 ("Good"), 11 students scored between 46 and 65 ("Fair"), and 3 students scored between 26 and 45 ("Poor"). Thus, most students performed in the "Good" range on the vocabulary test. The analysis revealed that students faced significant difficulties with prepositions, verbs, and pronouns. In contrast, nouns and conjunctions were less challenging for students. Among the vocabulary areas, prepositions were particularly difficult for students, indicating that questions involving prepositions were the most challenging.

Abstract

Reading ability is crucial in English language learning in Indonesia, which is taught at the beginning and comprehension levels. There are several factors that affect reading comprehension, such as vocabulary, reading techniques, motivation and personality. Introverts prefer internal processes and deep relationships, while extroverts engage in verbal discussions to improve comprehension. This study aims to find out whether there is a correlation between introvert personality and reading comprehension at the sixth semester students of English Language Education of FKIP UIR. The method of this quantitative study utilized a correlational design to explore the correlation. Data were collected from 22 introverted students using Eysenck's Personality Inventory questionnaire and TOEFL ITP section 3 reading comprehension test trough google form. The analysis employed Pearson’s correlation to measure the correlation between these variables. The result of this study show there is no significant correlation between introverted personality and reading comprehension, with a rxy value of 0.044 < rt value of 0.444 and a tcounted value of 0.197 < ttable value of 1.72. Teachers can improve learning by recognizing whether students are more introverted or extroverted, which allows for teaching strategies tailored to individual learning styles. Understanding personality types helps create an inclusive learning environment and allows students to capitalize on their strengths.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe students’ autonomous learning after students experienced synchronous learning. This research used a quantitative approach with a descriptive method. The study’s instrument is questionnaire through Google Form. The questionnaires consist of 15 items about students autonomous learning during synchronous learning and 10 items about students’ opinion of implementation of autonomous learning during synchronous learning. The data is described from 100 respondents to by descriptive analysis approach. The finding of this study reveals that there were four activities among other which students get, namely getting information about learning objectives for each new topic in synchronous learning, having different learning strategies for each different subject, looking for supporting materials that suit their needs, getting motivation during the class and students carried out learning activities as stated in the course outline from the lecturer's lesson plan. In addition, students' synchronous learning has become one of the factors that has assisted them in encouraging individual learning or keeping them autonomous with the assistance of lecturers' instruction and learning sources.

Abstract

This research investigates intensive reading instruction at Universitas Islam Riau, Indonesia, using Moodle-based synchronous and asynchronous methods. The qualitative approach was carried out through classroom observation involving 67 students and conducting interviews with 10 students. The study found that students' reading skills enhanced  by engaging in virtual meetings and discussions during synchronous classes, while asynchronous learning allowed them to freely determine when and where to study, access educational resources such as YouTube, e-modules, some files related to materials, quizzes, and feedback. Besides that, various challenges during asynchronous learning such as students often becoming inactive on online screens, experiencing delays in receiving lectures, difficulty finding a location to improve stable internet connectivity, and inadequate access to computer devices, laptops, or smartphones that require installing and uninstalling applications repeatedly that interfere with their learning process. Challenges in asynchronous learning include difficulty understanding the learning material, excessive workload, and lack of motivation. The study recommends integrating both learning approaches for reading classes and other English classes by leveraging more of Moodle's available LMS features, as well as highlighting the importance of improving infrastructure such as stable internet and device compatibility.

Abstract

Speaking is a significant and fundamental skill that may help students enhance their ability to communicate with their classmates verbally. Henceforth, instructors or teachers need to incorporate some educating media which can develop the students’ English speaking competence. Therefore, this study aims to discover the viability of news and media literacy for speaking practice at an advanced education level. The researchers used experimental research and took two groups as the sample of this study. There were experimental groups in class 4b and a control group in 4a class that comprised 35 students for each class. Moreover, the speaking test, mainly pre-test and post-test in both experimental class and control class, was also used as gathering information of the research. This research found that the difference between pre-test and post-test average speaking practice results was -24.540 to -17,689, with a 95 percent confidence range of -24.540 to -17,689 for this finding. Finally, this study discovered an average difference in students' speaking practice between the pre-test and post-test. Therefore, enhancing students use of news and media literacy is necessary for speaking practice and teachers need to encourage students’ use of technology to find out online sources as media literacy in learning the second language. They have various kinds of information from media sources and improve the advanced vocabulary that they used while practising speaking with their classmates. To summarize, integrating news and media literacy has a substantial impact on enhancing students' speaking skills among four-semester students of English Language Education in Pekanbaru.

Abstract

The world of education is currently experiencing a transformation in the learning process which allows the implementation of distance learning. Therefore, learning media is needed to facilitate students in the distance learning process, one of which is using e-module learning materials presented using an asynchronous method. This research aims to determine students' perceptions regarding electronic modules (e-modules) as a distance learning media using asynchronous methods. Four things are measured in knowing student perceptions regarding the electronics module (e-module), namely the clarity and suitability of text, images, and animations in the e-module, the presentation of learning material in the e-module, the usefulness of the e-module, and ease of access. Research data was collected using a questionnaire that was filled out online by students using Google Forms. The populations in this study were students from the 2023 class of the FKIP-UIR English Language Education, with a total of 65 students who were also the samples in this study. The data was analyzed using data verification steps, scoring, calculating the percentage of each answer category, and displaying the data in table form. Then the researcher interprets the results of the data analysis. The research results show that the average overall student perception results are 96% in the positive category. This indicates that the electronic module (e-module) for the Intensive Reading course is suitable for use as a distance learning media using an asynchronous method. The implication of research, the study can be used for other learning course and other method.

Abstract

Pronunciation is one of the most crucial subskills of English speaking. This study aims to determine students' pronunciation errors when pronouncing English short vowels in the fifth semester of English Language Education using the English Pronunciation IPA application and to determine the factors that influence their pronunciation errors. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative method design. It was conducted on students in fifth semester of English Language Education. The researcher collected data with two tools: pronunciation tests and interviews. Students can use the English Pronunciation IPA application as a help for taking long vowel pronunciation examinations. The researcher selected five students to serve as resource people for interviews. Based on the study results, the English Pronunciation IPA application was used to administer a pronunciation test to students. The results showed that, on average, students scored 15.57, with short vowels scoring 3.70 points. Pronouncing short vowels on the /ɒ/ and /æ/ sound are where students make the greatest mistakes. Then, interference and phonological knowledge are the factors that affect pupils' pronunciation issues in English.
