Abstract

As a country whose social, cultural and political structure is majorly occupied by Muslims, Islamophobia seems unlikely to be carried out by one Islamic group against another. However, in fact, Muslims in Indonesia are divided into various interest groups (madhab) that interact with each other and at the same time contest over space for actualization in the political system. This research provides preliminary evidence that Islamophobia may occur in countries that are predominantly Muslim and can be practiced by fellow Islam-based groups. Islamophobia is conducted through the mass media and constructed through the issues of radicalism, extremism and terrorism that lead to treason or overthrow of power. The motive for this discourse construction is a pro-power strategy that aims to anticipate anti-power movements carried out by the National Movement for Fatwa Defenders- 212 Indonesian Ulama Council. This conclusion is drawn based on critical discourse analysis (Norman Fairclough, 2010) which was carried out in four stages: focus on 'social irregularities', identification of barriers to addressing 'social irregularities', consideration whether social order requires this 'social irregularity' and identifying methods to solve problems. The 'social irregularity' referred to in this study is the construction of Islamophobia in the news coverage of Kompas.com in November 2016 to May 2017. The theoretical framework used in this study was Michel Foucault's Theories of Power.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of subregional political economy in Southeast Asia through a case study of cooperation between Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand within the framework of the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT). IMT-GT is a subregional cooperation initiative that aims to accelerate economic development in the border areas of the three countries by optimizing the potential of areas that have been underdeveloped. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis to examine the comparison of IMT-GT in Indonesia and Malaysia in increasing regional economic growth, identifying the challenges faced, and assessing its impact on regional economic integration in Southeast Asia. The results of the study indicate that there are differences in the implementation of IMT-GT in Indonesia and Malaysia as well as several obstacles that hinder the implementation of IMT GT in the countries concerned. This study also highlights the importance of the role of IMT-GT in strengthening connectivity and encouraging inter-regional trade. The policy implications of this study are the need to increase synergy between the government and the private sector, as well as strengthening subregional institutions to maximize the benefits of IMT-GT cooperation.

Abstract

This community service program aims to strengthen the sense of patriotism among Indonesian migrant workers’ children in Penang, Malaysia. Many of these children grow up in foreign environments with minimal exposure to Indonesian culture, making them prone to losing their national identity. This activity utilizes storytelling as a medium to instill nationalistic values and deepen their understanding of Indonesian culture and history. Storytelling was chosen because it is engaging and easy for children to understand, especially through interactive activities like role-playing and discussion. The children actively engage in the stories, participate in dialogue, and share their views on the meanings embedded within them. Facilitators also use visual aids and puppet characters to enhance messaging and increase participation. Evaluation is conducted through direct observation, interviews, and involvement in creative activities. The results show positive changes in the children’s understanding and attitudes towards national values, as well as a stronger sense of pride in their Indonesian identity. The children become more open to diversity, demonstrate a spirit of togetherness, and show respect for other cultures. This program has successfully fostered a stronger emotional connection to national values among these migrant children, which is expected to contribute to their character development as future citizens.
