Abstract

This study investigates how violence against women is depicted in the film Vina: Sebelum 7 Hari (2024) using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach. The film tells the story of Vina, a woman who becomes a victim of physical, sexual, and psychological violence by a motorcycle gang. The purpose of this research is to uncover how violence against women is represented through visual and narrative symbols in the film, as well as to deepen the understanding of how media shapes public perceptions of gender-based violence. The methodology used is a descriptive qualitative approach, analyzing scenes that depict violence against women using Peirce’s semiotic theory, which includes representamen, object, and interpretant. The findings of the study reveal that the film portrays violence not only as an individual act but also as a manifestation of the patriarchal social structure that normalizes male domination over women. This research contributes to the development of literature on the representation of violence in the media and emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about violence against women.

Abstract

As a cultural product, music is not only a form of entertainment but also a medium for expressing the psychological struggles of young adults. This study aims to analyze how Quarter Life Crisis is represented through the lyrical signs in the song “Zombie” (English Version) by DAY6. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this research applies Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis to uncover denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings, supported by Stuart Hall’s theory of representation and Berger and Luckmann’s paradigm of social construction. The primary aim is to analyze how the meaning of Quarter Life Crisis is socially constructed and communicated. The findings reveal that the lyrics represent emotional states commonly associated with Quarter Life Crisis such as emptiness, overthinking, loneliness, and the sense of being trapped. These meanings are embedded in metaphoric expressions like “became a zombie”, “meaningless life”, and “wishin’ to stop and close my eyes.” Through layered meanings, the song deconstructs the modern myths surrounding youth and success. The research concludes that lyrics can serve as a powerful medium for representing the internal crises experienced by young generations and can reflect broader social realities through symbolic language. This study contributes to understanding music as a reflective space for cultural and psychological phenomena among early adulthood generations. Keywords: emptiness, music, quarter life crisis, representation, semiotics

Abstract

This study examines how frontline employees' service communication shapes customer satisfaction in a business that combines two simultaneous service lines billiard and café using Cue Club Pool and Coffee in Madiun, Indonesia, as a case. Prior qualitative accounts of interpersonal service communication have concentrated on single-line service settings such as hotels, restaurants, banks, and hospitals, and the limited work on billiard-café ventures has examined servicescape and experiential marketing without addressing how frontline communication itself is enacted or how it translates into satisfaction. This study addresses that gap. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected from five purposively selected informants (three customers and two employees) through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and documentation, and analyzed with Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña's interactive model through open, axial, and selective coding. Findings show that employees' service communication reflects DeVito's five interpersonal characteristics (openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, equality) with uneven consistency, and as this study's central contribution that customer satisfaction is generated through two distinct mechanisms: a functional pathway (speed, information reliability, transactional accuracy) and a relational pathway (personal familiarity, preference recognition, memorable service moments), with the relational pathway emerging as the stronger driver of satisfaction that exceeds expectations. Declines in the SERVQUAL dimensions of reliability and responsiveness are explained by workload pressure and the emotional labor employees perform to sustain positive affect during high-traffic periods. The study contributes a dual-pathway model of satisfaction formation in combined entertainment-service businesses and offers practical recommendations for similar ventures

Abstract

This study examines Generation Z's (Gen Z) perception of Gus Baha's da'wah content on simplicity distributed through TikTok. The phenomenon of increasing digital da'wah content consumption by Gen Z forms the significant backdrop, particularly Gus Baha's content which has garnered more than one million views across TikTok channels. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using in-depth interview method with three informants aged 15–27 years selected through purposive sampling. Data were analysed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis. The theoretical framework comprises Stephen P. Robbins' Perception Theory (selection, organisation, interpretation), Uses and Gratifications Theory (Katz, Blumler, & Gurevitch, 1974), and Stuart Hall's Reception Theory (1980). The findings reveal three main themes: (1) simplicity as a spiritual role model; (2) relevance of da'wah language to Gen Z's materialism issues; and (3) awareness of wealth-orientation risks. All informants demonstrated dominant reading of Gus Baha's simplicity message, interpreting content through spiritual and social frames consistent with their lived experiences. The study concludes that Gus Baha's da'wah content successfully fulfils spiritual, identity, and social-enlightenment gratifications for Gen Z through a simple, contextual, and authentic communicative approach, offering implications for digital da'wah content creators on TikTok.

Abstract

Instagram has become an important space for musicians to construct public identity through a complementary blend of visual and verbal messages. However, studies integrating the analysis of visual and verbal signs within the context of musicians' personal branding in Indonesia remain limited. This study aims to analyze the representation of Baskara Putra's self-image as a musician on the Instagram account @wordfang using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic approach. The research employs a qualitative method with an interpretive case study approach. The research data were sourced from seven purposively selected posts depicting the subject's musical activities. Data analysis focused on the relationship between signifier and signified formed through the integration of visual elements (photos) and verbal elements (captions). The findings reveal four main dimensions of self-image representation: professionalism and commitment to music-making, recognition of musical works, immersion in musical activity, and emotional connection with the audience. These four dimensions complement one another and construct a self-image that is not framed as instant success, but as an ongoing creative process. These findings affirm that the integration of visual and verbal signs on social media operates in a unified manner in shaping a musician's identity, while also enriching the application of Saussure's classical semiotics within the context of contemporary digital communication, and contributing empirically to studies of public figures' self-representation on social media platforms.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of United States nationalism in the film Top Gun: Maverick through Robert Entman's framing analysis. The study used a qualitative approach with a media textual analysis method. Data were obtained through observation and documentation of six purposively selected scenes, then analyzed using Entman's four framing devices: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and treatment recommendations. Data validity was carried out through theoretical triangulation and expert judgment. The results show that the film frames global threats as legitimizing the use of United States military force, positioning technological superiority, professionalism, and soldier solidarity as solutions to these threats, and constructing a positive image of the military institution through representations of heroism and global leadership. These findings indicate that Top Gun: Maverick functions as a medium for legitimizing military policy through a framing strategy that integrates nationalist narratives with representations of military superiority. Academically, this research extends the application of Entman's framing model in the study of audiovisual media by showing how popular media construct ideological legitimacy for the use of military force through narrative and visual construction.

Abstract

This study examines the symbolic meaning and self-healing messages in the lyrics of Secukupnya by Hindia using Ferdinand de Saussure's dyadic semiotics (signifier, signified, sign). Released on May 3, 2019 as the second single from the album Menari dengan Bayangan (2019), the song addresses existential anxiety about the future, economic precarity, collective failure, family wounds, nostalgic escape, and decay, before arriving at a resolution centered on measured grief and cyclical impermanence. This descriptive qualitative study employs a content analysis method. Data were collected through documentation and literature review, then analyzed systematically using Saussurean semiotic tables. Self-compassion theory (Neff, 2003, 2011) serves as a supporting conceptual framework. Results identify four dominant sign clusters: (1) anxiety and structural pressure signs; (2) collective failure and solidarity signs; (3) wounds, decay, and nostalgic escape signs; and (4) measured grief and cyclical impermanence signs. Contrary to its surface meaning as 'sufficient rest,' the word 'secukupnya' undergoes a significant semiotic shift across the song from a threshold that has been exceeded (negative) to a healthy unit of grieving (positive). The common humanity component of self-compassion emerges as the most dominant and explicit dimension, particularly through the sign 'we all fail' and the inverted toast ritual of grieving together, while mindfulness and self-kindness appear more implicitly. This study contributes to popular music semiotics in Indonesia and demonstrates that the song offers a socially relational, rather than purely individual, model of self-healing.

Abstract

Effective coordination is essential for manufacturing companies because production, administration, and distribution activities are closely interconnected. This study aims to analyze internal communication and its contribution to operational effectiveness at PT Atlas Ice Ngawi Branch using Goldhaber's organizational communication perspective. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed with purposive sampling involving six informants from different organizational divisions. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings indicate that internal communication supports operational effectiveness through continuous communication processes, clear message exchange, integrated communication networks, positive working relationships, adaptation to the organizational environment, interdependence among divisions, and efforts to reduce uncertainty. Communication mechanisms such as shift briefings, operational reports, telephone communication, and WhatsApp groups help maintain information continuity despite differences in work schedules. This study contributes to the application of Goldhaber's organizational communication theory by demonstrating that the seven communication concepts operate in an integrated manner to strengthen coordination and support operational effectiveness in a manufacturing company with a shift-based work system.
