Abstract

The introduction of a new halal logo in Indonesia by the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) in 2022 has triggered wide-ranging public responses, particularly from Muslim consumers and stakeholders. This study explores the perceptions of Islamic economics scholars regarding the new halal logo, analyzed through the lens of Muslim consumer behavior theory. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight lecturers from the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business at the State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Manado. The findings reveal that five out of eight participants expressed disapproval toward the new logo, citing its aesthetic complexity, lack of clear Islamic symbolism, and cultural partiality—factors they argue diminish recognition and trust among Muslim consumers. Conversely, three respondents supported the redesign, viewing it as a cultural representation of Indonesian identity and a fresh approach to halal branding. The study also uncovers critical reflections on the shift in halal certification authority from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) to BPJPH. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on halal consumer perception and suggests that policy efforts must be accompanied by public education to ensure acceptance and functionality of halal symbols. The results underscore the importance of religious-cultural alignment and visual clarity in halal certification communication strategies.

Abstract

Islam recognizes the urge to engage in commercial operations and does not forbid such activities; in fact, business activities can be an element of worship if done according to Islamic code of ethics.  This principle becomes particularly relevant in analyzing the business practices of Muslim traders within the contemporary urban Muslim society of the City of Thousand Churches. The purpose of this article is to meticulously map the business practices of urban Muslim traders in the city of a thousand churches, using Rafik Issa Beekun's theory of Islamic business ethics, as well as theory indicators such as unity, equilibrium, freewill, responsibility, and benevolence. This study used a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. A total of six informants, consisting of four women and two men who are Muslim traders in urban Manado, were selected to provide in-depth information based on their business experiences within the predominantly non-Muslim society. The data collected from these interviews were analyzed using the framework of Islamic business ethics to explore the ethical practices applied by these traders. The findings of this study demonstrate that practically all informants who operate as traders in the Urban Manado area met the five markers of Islamic business ethics theory. Although two traders' practices do not match the Free Will indicator, this has no substantial impact because they can still be improved through socialization. It may be inferred that, despite the fact that Muslim traders reside in a minority area, trade practices consistent with Islamic business ethics are nonetheless widely practiced by traders in Manado's urban centre, known as the city of a thousand churches.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of Islamic business ethics principles in the production practices and transactions of buying and selling brown sugar in West Otam Village and its implications on the sustainability of producers' income. The research uses a qualitative method with a field study approach. Data were collected through participatory observation, semistructured interviews with producers, collectors, and consumers, and documentation, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model with source triangulation techniques and techniques. The results of the study show that the economic practices of the people of West Otam Village have substantively reflected the main values of Islamic business ethics, especially honesty (shiddiq), mutual willingness (an-tarāḍin), and responsibility (mas'uliyah), even though the business actors do not understand these concepts formally. The heavy inconsistency of the product due to the use of traditional molds does not give rise to the element of gharar in a substantive way because it is mitigated through information disclosure and agreement between the manufacturer and the buyer. The quality integrity of products without chemical mixtures is proven to build consumer trust and loyalty, which contributes to the stability of producers' income. However, the study also found that some small producers have some bargaining position against collectors, indicating that distributive justice is not optimal. This study concludes that Islamic business ethics not only function as a normative guideline, but also as a rational economic strategy in supporting the sustainability of rural micro business income. Therefore, this study recommends strengthening sharia-based local economic institutions as well as simple standardization of production tools to improve the justice and economic sustainability of the community.
