Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the factors that cause students’ anxiety in speaking class and the strategies used by the students to overcome it. This research is categorized as descriptive qualitative research. It involved all the students of English educational department of PGRI University of Banyuwangi in the academic year 2017/2018 as the subjects of the research. The instruments were the observation sheets, reflection sheets, and a voice recorder. The data were collected through observations and interviews with the students and English speaking lecturer. The researcher also made data categorization before formulating the findings. The findings of the study describe five factors that cause anxiety. The first factor is fear of making mistakes. The mistakes that commonly happened here are on pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. The second factor is the speaking tasks which demands classroom presentation. It is also related to students’ lack of confidence, preparation, and practice. The third is students’ self perceptions. The factor is about students’ thought and estimation towards their own capability in mastering the speaking skill which can influence their speaking performance. The next is gap of competence. The factor is dealing with students’ competence in English compared with others. The last is the role of the English speaking lecturer. It is related to lecturer’ ability to maintain suitable classroom activities for the students because it will affect the psychological condition of the students as well. The study also found some strategies used by students to cope with their anxiety. Those strategies are memorization, cognitive, and affective strategies.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to know whether the students taught by using Previewing Strategy get better reading comprehension in descriptive text score, because the observation showed that students have low score reading comprehension in descriptive text. The research design of this research was pre-experimental desaign. The respondents of this research were the tenth grade students of AK class at SMK Darul Anwar, that consisting of 31 students. To collect the data the researcher uses test as the instrument. The data were collected through multiple chioce. The test is given before and after the treatment. Abstract

Reading comprehension is a part of English learning in education, the meaning of comprehension is the process of eliciting making meaning thought interaction and involvement with written language. The purpose of this research was to know whether the students taught by using comic strips get better Reading Comprehension of Descriptive text score. The purpose of this research was to know whether the students taught by using comic strips get better Reading Comprehension score of Descriptive text. This research was an experimental research. The type of the research was a pre experimental research. The researcher used one group pretest and posttest design. The respondents of this research were 34 students. Before giving the treatment, the students were given pre-test, and post-test was given after the treatment. The technique of collecting data was a test. The technique of data analysis was T-test formula in order to know the difference between the average of posttest of experimental class and pretest of experimental class. T-test was analyzed and interpreted with the degree of significances 5% with db = 32 and the T-table is 2,021. The results of T-test analysis is 5,27. It means that the T-test ( 5,27 ) is higher than T-table ( 2,021 ) in the significances 5%. From the research finding, it can be concluded that the students taught by using comic strips get better score on reading comprehension of descriptive text. It is suggested for the future researcher to conduct further research on similar area by improving the methodology.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the students’ oral communication in English of the sixth semester students of English Educational Department PGRI University of Banyuwangi in the Academic Year 2018/2019. This research is a descriptive quantitative. The respondents were the sixth semester students of English Educational Department PGRI University of Banyuwangi. The data were taken by using speaking test. The data of speaking test were analyzed by using percentage formula. The result of the data analysis was students’ problem based on grammar, pronunciation and fluency. Based on the data analyzed by using percentage formula, the first indicator is grammar. The students got the percentage scores about 33,78%. Based on the interval range scores, the percentage of students’ grammar scores was categorized as good. The second indicator is pronunciation. The students got the percentage scores about 33,43%. Based onthe interval range scores, the percentage of students’ pronunciationwas categorized as good. Then, the last indicator is fluency. The students got the percentage scores about 32,78%. From the interval range scores, the percentage of students’ fluency wascategorizedas good.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to know the effect of Spelling Bee game to students vocabulary mastery. This research design was in experimental research. The researcher observed 33 students’ of tenth grade TKJ 2 at SMK NU Mamba’ul Huda. The researcher used pre-test and post-test and those were in the form of multiple choice tests. The data were analyzed statistically by using T-test. Afterward, T-test was analyzed and interpreted with the degree of significances 5% with db = N – 1 = 33-1 = 32 and the T- table is 2,036. The results of T-test analysis was 12,09. The result showed that there was a significant difference between using and without spelling bee game to students vocabulary mastery. Based on the research result, it can be concluded that teaching English vocabulary by Spelling Bee game was effective and gave remarkable progress in students vocabulary mastery, especially in X TKJ 2 at SMK NU Mambaba’ul Huda Tegalsari.

Abstract

Nowadays, code-mixing phenomenon is commonly used in communication. In this case, people sometimes mix the language into another language in order to get understand and succesful of communication. The objectives of the study are to find out the types and the levels of code-mixing used in “My Stupid Boss part 1” movie. In this study, the researcher focuses on Indonesian, English, and Javanese utterance. This research method used a descriptive qualitative method. It described the results of research that was objectively analyzed by collecting data. The data source was script movie. The researcher used free listening method. Then, the analysis method followed the steps of Miles and Hubarman. The result was displayed on the table of code-mixing and explained with narrative text. The researcher used 58 data from the utterances in the movie that are considered is able to represent of code-mixing. Analysis focused on two types and six levels of code-mixing. There are 12 of inner code-mixing and 54 of outer code-mixing used in this movie. Then, there are 40 of word levels, 18 of phrase levels, 2 of clause levels, 1 of baster level, and 7 of repetition word level.

Abstract

Language is primarily a speech. It is used in a society and it is a social event. People use a language for communication with each other. This research aimed to describe students’ perceptions toward code-switching used by English teacher, and the types of code-switching that used teacher in teaching-learning process. The research design was descriptive qualitative. The respondents were 36 students in SMK Negeri 1 Banyuwangi which determined by used purposive sampling. The data were taken by used documentation and questionnaire. The data from documentation used to analyze the types of code-switching. The data from questionnaire analyzed by using Likert scale. The data analysis was determined based on theory of interest with four indicators. They are effect of code-switching in rising their confidence, learning materials mastery, learning motivation, and interaction in teaching-learning process. The result of documentation show that there are three types of code switching that used by teacher in teaching-learning process. The percentage are tag code-switching (27,55%), inter sentential code-switching (43,87%), and intra sentential code-switching (28,57%). Analysis of questionnaire data showed that the index percentage of students’ perceptions toward code switching used by English teacher was 73% that consists of effect of code-switching in rising students’ confident 75%, analyzing learning materials mastery 77%, learning motivation 73%, and 69% interaction in teaching-learning process.

Abstract

Objectives of this research are to identify types and levels of code-mixing and the most dominant one in Deddy Corbuzier’s Podcast. The researcher employs descriptive qualitative method by downloaded podcast video from youtube and write down the script and classified the types of code-mixing and levels of code-mixing in utterances of the dialog between Deddy and Azka in podcast channel video. After collecting and selecting the data, the researcher starts to analyze the data by using Muskyen and Suwito's qualitative data analysis method. The method consists of three steps, namely data reduction, data display, and verification and conclusion drawing. The results show that in Deddy Corbuzier’s Podcast Channel there were 77 utterances of Code-Mixing. They are 77 data of types of code-mixing and 90 data of levels of code-mixing The dominant type of code mixing is “Altetnation”. While the dominant levels of code-mixing is “Clause”. The researcher found that there are types of code mixing, they are 23 data of insertion, 33 data of alternation, and 21 data of congruent Lexicalization. Then, The reseacher found that levels of code-mixing, there are 30 data of word, 20 data of phrase, 1 data of repitition, 1 data of baster, 38 data of clause, and no idioms levels Based on the result above, it was concluded that all types and levels of code-mixing that was found in Deddy Corbuzier’s Podcast Channel.

Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Two Stay-Two Stray technique in improving the speaking skills of tenth-grade students at MAU Al Anwari the academic year 2023-2024. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests to measure changes in students' speaking abilities after the application of the technique. Analysis revealed that most students achieved post-test scores within the 41-60 range, with an average post-test score of 52.38. The T-test analysis showed that the T-test value (13.650) was higher than the T-table value (2.086), indicating that the difference between pre-test and post-test scores was statistically significant. These findings suggest that the Two Stay-Two Stray technique has a significant impact on enhancing students' speaking abilities. The technique not only improved students' speaking skills but also provided a more enjoyable learning experience, supporting student motivation and engagement in the classroom. This result aligns with Warsono and Hariyanto's (2012) view that cooperative learning methods, such as Two Stay-Two Stray, enhance student participation and create a positive learning environment. The technique proved effective in facilitating peer interaction, allowing self-assessment, creative expression, and the development of interpersonal relationships, making it a valuable method for improving speaking skills in English language teaching.

Abstract

Perceptions are the results of information which are expressed to other people who have different meanings in each human brain. The purpose of this research is to determine students’ perceptions of the use of the Board Race Game in learning English. This research used method research such as descriptive quantitative research. There were  52 students as respondents of a senior high schools on the eleventh grade at SMK PGRI 1 Giri Banyuwangi. The purposive sampling was one of the techniques used in this research. To find out the perceptions on the use Board Race Game in Learning English, the data collection method was done by filling out the questionnaire. Related to the result of research of the students’ perceptions on the eleventh grade at SMK PGRI 1 Giri Banyuwangi is a good category with overall percentage 78%. The researcher suggests that English teachers use the Board Race Game as a learning method. Through Games, English teachers can deliver the materials easily and creatively
