Abstract

Indonesia has various tribes and cultures, from Sabang to Merauke. Culture in Indonesia is known as a view of values ​​in social life. North Sumatra is one of the provinces in Indonesia which is famous for its cultural diversity among the 38 provinces in the country. This research aims to determine efforts to introduce culture in the province of North Sumatra through the PMM3 program in the Archipelago course at HKBP Nommensen University, Medan. This research is a type of qualitative research. Introduction to Culture for PMM3 students in 3 ways: education, religion and culture. Introduction efforts were made through learning, visiting the Maytreya monastery, enjoying the Sigale-gale dance performance, and visiting the Ulos village. Based on the research results, it is known that PMM3 students have additional knowledge and insight into culture in the province of North Sumatra obtained from experience and learning the Nusantara module.

Abstract

This study focused on finding out the effect of applying Duolingo Application on students listening anchievement. The objective of the study is to find out whether Duolingo Application affects student achievement in listening. This study was conducted by applied experimental quantitative research. The sample of the study was the first-year students of SMP Negeri 1 Pasaributobing. The writer took VII-A which consists of 29 students as an experimental class with used Duolingo Application and VII-B which consists of 29 students as the control group used the conventional method. The population of this study was 58 students which consist of Seventh classes. The writer took two classes as random sampling to see the effect of Duolingo Application as a media in teaching listening. The data were taken by giving listening test. The tests were divided into two tests: pre-test and post-test for both experimental and control groups. The mean score of pre-test in the experimental class is 49,6 and the post-test is 80,5. The mean score of pre-test in the control group is 50,1 and the post-test is 60,5. The result that t-calculated >t-table as the level of significance p =0,05 (18,33 > 1.673). The Alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It is suggested that teachers of English subject apply Duolingo Aplication as an alternative teaching media to help listening ability at seventh grade students of Junior High School.

Abstract

Sikap bullying menjadi salah satu penghambat sebuah kesuksesan jika dihadapi dengan respons negatif. Namun, berbeda jika merespons hal tersebut dengan lebih positif, penuh rasa percaya dengan kemampuan sendiri. Maka hasilnya akan sukses dan memberikan motivasi bagi orang lain untuk bisa menjadi orang sukses tanpa melupakan masa lalu. Bullying menjadi penghambat untuk kesuksesan, buktinya orang sukses pun masih mendapatkan prilaku bulying tersebut yang membuat ia harus lebih keras lagi untuk berusaha dalam membuktikan mimpinya. Maka dari itu, perilaku bullying seharusnya diberantas dengan memberikan pendidikan moral kepada anak-anak sejak kecil. Orang tua juga harus mengingatkan bahwa bercanda dengan menghina orang lain adalah perbuatan yang tidak boleh dilakukan. Membiasakan anak berbuat baik dan saling menyayangi. Karena dampak dari bullying sangat besar dalam pengaruh kedewasaan seseorang dalam meraih impian dan cita-cita hidupnya. Terutama jika terjadi pada seorang anak kecil. Menyikapi permasalahan tersebut, penulis telah merancang beberapa metode, teknik, dan strategi untuk meningkatkan kosakata untuk kebutuhan remaja dan muda mudi.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui ketidakfasihan yang dilakukan oleh pembawa acara dan bintang tamu di YouTube Vindes yang diwakili oleh transkrip Vindes. Ketidakfasihan sering terjadi pada ucapan spontan. Teori yang mendukung tesis ini adalah teori yang dikemukakan oleh Gilquin dan Bloodstein;. Analisis berfokus pada jenis ketidakfasihan yaitu jeda senyap, jeda terisi, pengulangan, dan awal yang salah. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis ketidaklancaran yang terdapat dalam talkshow, (2) untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis ketidaklancaran yang dominan. Tesis ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif Meleong. Langkah-langkah yang dilakukan dalam analisis ini adalah mengumpulkan data dengan mengunduh video talkshow, menyalin data, mengidentifikasi ketidaklancaran, mengklasifikasikan ketidaklancaran, menghitung jenis ketidaklancaran yang dominan, dan menyimpulkan analisis. Hasil analisis diperoleh jumlah ketidakfasihan yang dilakukan oleh penutur sebanyak 125. Pengulangan terjadi sebanyak 29 kali yaitu 23,2%, jeda diam sebanyak 36 kali yaitu 28,8%, jeda terisi sebanyak 56 kali yaitu 44,8%, dan awal yang salah sebanyak 4 kali yaitu 3,2 %. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa repetisi lebih dominan dibandingkan dengan tipe lainnya. Penyebab ketidaklancaran adalah karena kesulitan kognitif. Pembicara membutuhkan waktu lebih lama untuk menghasilkan kata dari kalimat untuk topik abstrak dibandingkan dengan topik konkrit. Penutur mengalami ketidakfasihan bicara akibat kesulitan mereka dalam menemukan kata yang tepat. Kemudian berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini disarankan kepada peneliti selanjutnya untuk menggunakan metode ini, dan menggunakan temuan tersebut sebagai dasar untuk melakukan desain penelitian lainnya.

Abstract

This study seeks to characterize the proficiency and identify the challenges encountered by tenth-grade students at SMK 3 Parulian Medan in employing auxiliary verbs within the context of descriptive text writing. Employing a qualitative descriptive research design, this study aimed to describe the competence and pinpoint the obstacles faced by tenth-grade students at SMK 3 Parulian Medan in applying auxiliary verbs within descriptive text writing. Data were gathered through an analysis of the written works produced by 20 students following a task to compose descriptive texts. The data collection technique involved providing clarification regarding the nature of descriptive texts and offering illustrative examples of descriptive texts centered on the topic of describing a place. The findings indicated that, in general, tenth-grade students at SMK 3 Parulian Medan exhibited a satisfactory proficiency in writing descriptive texts, achieving an average score of 81.65. An analysis of their auxiliary verb usage revealed a total of 122 words, comprising 42 instances of "to have," 2 instances of "to do," and 15 instances of modal auxiliary verbs. However, a more in-depth analysis unveiled persistent difficulties in students' application of auxiliary verbs. This is attributed to a perceived lack of attention to the relevant learning materials during classroom instruction.

Abstract

This research focuses on finding out the effect of the Using Animation Movies on students' listening skill. The aim of this research is to find out whether the using Animation Movies affects students' listening performance. This research was carried out as an applied experimental quantitative research type. The research sample consisted of class VIII students at SMP Negeri 37 Medan. The author took class VIII-A, consisting of 32 students, as an experimental class using the Animation Movies, and class VIII-B, consisting of 32 students, as a control group using the Active Listening Skills Approach. The population of this study was 64 students, consisting of class VIII. The author took two classes as a random sample to see the influence of the Using Animation Movies as a medium for developing students' listening skills. Data is taken by giving a listening test. The test was divided into two tests: a pre-test and a post-test for the experimental and control groups. The average pre-test score in the experimental class was 65,6 and the post-test score was 80. The average pre-test score in the control group was 55,9. and the post-test score was 68,9. This shows that the average score in the experimental group was higher than the control group. The result is t-calculated > t-table with a significance level of p = 0.05 (2,54 > 1.669). The alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It is recommended that English subject teachers apply the using Animation Movies as an alternative teaching medium to help the listening skills of class VIII students at SMP Negeri 37 Medan.

Abstract

Gorga is a carving art found on the exterior of Toba traditional houses with motifs consisting of three types of colors; red, black, and white. This article aims to reveal a very deep meaning in the carvings and colors of Gorga as the life principle of the Toba people. It is applied in public buildings, one of which is the art of building such as the Toba traditional house. The metaphorical approach has been applied to several building arts, but the clarity of the type of applied metaphor cannot be ascertained. The method uses qualitative, by describing the metaphorical elements of the results of the literature study and several references to design elements and the results on three study objects that have the same function as residential houses but different types. It was found that only two kinds of metaphor in the architecture are applied, they are tangible and intangible. Each element was compared in a matrix form so that it can be concluded that the elements contained in the metaphorical approach consist of meaning and form, and it is also concluded that the type of metaphor in each object of study has a different type of metaphor.

Abstract

It is a universal agreement among scientists that critical reading skill is one of the hardest skill that should be possessed by the student. Meanwhile, there is a prove claimed that the metacognitive strategy gave a major significance in reading ability. This study was intended to discover the use of metacognitive strategy in enhancing students’ critical reading skill. The subject of this study was the students of Nommensen HKBP University. This study applied the reading test and the observation sheets in two different cycles to observe the significant improvement of the students in their critical reading ability. The results showed the improvement of the students’ reading test score during the implementation of the two cycles. Furthermore, the observation sheets showed that the students was becoming interesting and easier in doing the critical reading practice and test that leading the class to comprehend the critical reading skill successfully. Therefore, it is apparent that through the implementation of the metacognitive strategy, students can improve their understanding in the critical reading skill.

Abstract

Pengelolaan sampah merupakan tantangan utama dalam menjaga kebersihan lingkungan, terutama di wilayah pedesaan. Desa Durin Jangak, Kecamatan Pancur Batu, Kabupaten Deli Serdang, menghadapi permasalahan rendahnya kesadaran masyarakat dalam mengelola sampah, minimnya sarana pembuangan, serta kurangnya edukasi terkait dampak sampah terhadap kesehatan dan lingkungan. Program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kesadaran masyarakat melalui sosialisasi, pelatihan pengelolaan sampah berbasis 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), serta penyediaan sarana pendukung. Metode yang digunakan mencakup observasi, sosialisasi, serta kegiatan praktik langsung dalam pengelolaan sampah. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pemahaman masyarakat terhadap pentingnya pengelolaan sampah, serta partisipasi aktif dalam kegiatan kebersihan lingkungan. Selain itu, program ini juga memberikan manfaat tambahan berupa rumah belajar bagi anak-anak desa untuk meningkatkan kemampuan literasi dan numerasi. Keberlanjutan program ini memerlukan dukungan dari pemerintah desa dan komunitas lokal agar kesadaran masyarakat terus meningkat dan praktik pengelolaan sampah yang baik dapat menjadi kebiasaan jangka panjang.

Abstract

This study investigates the ideational metafunction within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), with a specific focus on Michiwichi's short story Friends. This research aims to find out the types of processes that exist in the story. Four types of processes occur, namely material process, mental process, relational process, and verbal process. Language is examined not merely as a means of communication but also as a vehicle for constructing and representing experiential meaning. The analysis employs the transitivity system, which includes material, mental, relational, and verbal processes to explore how experiences are linguistically structured in the narrative. Adopting a descriptive qualitative approach, the research classifies each clause according to its transitivity elements (process, participant, and circumstance). The findings reveal that the text utilizes diverse process types to encode meaning, with material processes being the most prevalent, followed by mental and relational processes. These results demonstrate how linguistic features are deliberately employed to express the characters' emotions, motivations, and social dynamics. The study underscores the relevance of SFL in literary analysis and affirms that even brief fictional works can provide valuable insights for functional linguistic examination.
