Abstract

Cassava is a food substitute for rice to support community food security. Food availability is also determined by the level of farmer welfare as measured by income. This study aims to determine: (a) income rates of cassava farmers, b) factors affecting income rates of cassava farm; and (c) What is production trend of Nuabosi cassava. This research was conducted in Randotonda Village between November-January 2020.  The population was 210 farmers. The sampling technique was simple random sampling, while the determination of the respondent used Slovin formula. The number of sample was 68 farmers. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to analyze the factors affecting income, and to forecast cassava production, the researcher used trend statistical analysis with regression analysis. The total income received by cassava farmers when they sold it to the district market was IDR 128.994.043 per ha and if they sold it famers’ garden was IDR 102.311.543 per ha. The variables that have a significant effect on cassava  income and have a positive sign are the variables of land area, productivity, labor efficiency, dummy planting patterns, and the length of farming. The variable that has a significant and negative sign is the variable age. The development of Nuabosi cassava production and farm has an increasing trend. Nuabosi cassava farmers need to improve their cultivation techniques by using intercropping patterns, access prices for agricultural inputs and marketing. Keywords: Nuabosi cassava; income; production trend

Abstract

This research is to: (1) analyze the level of economic efficiency of upland rice farming in different land ownership status and (2) analyze the factors that influence the economic efficiency of upland rice farming in different land ownership status. The data analysis method used was the production function approach and stochastic frontier cost function. The analysis results show that seed and fertilizer price variables have a significant impact on the 99% significance level and are positive. Labor wage has no significant impact on production costs and is negative. Production variable has a significant impact on the 99% significance level. Landowner and farmhand dummy variables have a 99% significant level and are positive. It can be interpreted that the production costs in both the landowner and farmhand land ownership status are higher than in the pawn taker land ownership status. The average level of economic efficiency of the landowner is higher than the farmhand and pawn taker ownership status. Factors that influence the economic efficiency of upland rice farming include: age, duration of farming, frequency of obtaining information, membership of farmer groups, other sources of income, landowner dummy and farmhand dummy.

This activity aims to prepare the community to have independence through various activities starting from sorghum cultivation techniques, sorghum post-harvest techniques, compost house construction, extension and training in making compost, processing various derivative products, business training and mentoring and marketing. The methods used consist of extension, training, and mentoring. The activity begins with the construction of a compost house, compost making training, cultivation training and mentoring, post-harvest, processing of various sorghum derivative products, business development and marketing mentoring. The extension and training activities begin with a pre-test, and the average correct answer is 30.3% in the low category. Training and mentoring activities for composting using livestock and agricultural waste as the basic materials. In the training and mentoring activities, sorghum cultivation techniques and post-harvest sorghum were carried out by processing the soil and fertilizing to increase productivity. The results obtained from sorghum cultivation were trained and mentored in processing various derivative products ranging from making sorghum rice into sorghum flour, sorghum-based cookies, sorghum flower cakes and processing sorghum cultivation waste in the form of sorghum stalks into sorghum sugar. Furthermore, the community was also assisted in processing business registration permits in the form of PIRT (Household Industry Products) at BPOM (Food and Drug Monitoring Agency) of Ende Regency so that the community became independent from providing raw materials to derivative products for marketing which could increase community or family income. A post-test was also conducted at the end of the activity and the results showed an increase in knowledge and skills of 87% with a high category.

Abstract

Abstract. Lanamana W, Fatima I, Supardi PN. 2026. A comparative study of the economic efficiency of ritual-based Sorghum bicolor farming in Indonesia. Asian J Agric 10 (1): g100149. https://doi.org/10.13057/asianjagric/g100149. Sorghum bicolor is an alternative food source in the Ende District, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, given its low productivity and inefficient yields. Farming rituals have been proven to increase S. bicolor productivity. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the economic efficiency level of farmers who engage in S. bicolor farming ritual practices, and who do not, as well as to review the factors affecting both practices. The Cobb-Douglas Stochastic Frontier production function analysis was adopted. Production variables included land, seeds, fertilizers, labor, and pesticides. This study was conducted in four S. bicolor potential sub-districts, using a census method with 385 farmers as respondents. The farmers from three sub-districts who practiced farming rituals included Wolojita (50 farmers), Lepembusu Kelisoke (75 farmers), and Kotabaru (50 farmers). A total of 210 farmers from the Nangapenda Sub-district did not practice farming rituals. The results showed that farming rituals were more effective, with technical, allocative, and economic efficiencies of 91%, 95%, and 92%, respectively. However, without farming rituals, 78%, 78%, and 64% were achieved in technical, allocative, and economic efficiencies, respectively. A benefit-cost ratio analysis of >1 showed that S. bicolor farming was feasible. Factors that positively affected economic efficiency comprised education, farmer group membership, and rituals. Local governments need to ensure agricultural extension schedules support traditional calendars to facilitate simultaneous planting. The transformation of farmer groups into agricultural input providers was also required.
