Abstract

The IFA (Iron Folic Acid) Supplements program among schoolgirls is one of the specific interventions from the Ministry of Health in Indonesia to overcome the high stunting rate in Indonesia. However, several studies found that there are still few female students who want to take IFA. This study aims to analyze intention of female students in taking IFA based on health belief model and emphasize the cues to action construct as a health communication variable in this model. The research was conducted through a survey of 92 female students from two schools in Dramaga District and Ciampea District, Bogor Regency using a quantitative approach. The PLS-SEM application is used to analyze the relationship between variables and test hypotheses. This research found that knowledge and source of information and cues to action influence intention to consume TTD. The results of this research can contribute to improving TTD program interventions that strengthen cues to action or various health communication means regarding IFA to female students.

Abstract

Abstract

Waste management issues in Indonesia are a major concern due to the high volume and poor management systems in many Final Processing Sites (TPAs). This study aims to analyze the impact of the expansion of the Ijobalit Landfill in East Lombok Regency on the environment and social dynamics of the surrounding community. The research uses a qualitative approach with an embedded single case study design. Data was collected through field observation and in-depth interviews, then analyzed using NVivo 12 Plus software. The results showed that the expansion of the landfill was carried out without meeting the operational standards (SOP) and SNI, causing various negative impacts, such as water and air pollution, declining the quality of agricultural land, health problems, and social unrest in the community. Economically, landfills do not make a significant contribution to the welfare of the community. The conclusions of this study emphasize the importance of sustainable and participatory landfill management. This study recommends the need for ecological and social-based waste management policies, involving communities in every stage of planning and decision-making.

Abstract

The rising prevalence of diet-related diseases necessitates a focus on individual food selection to enhance nutrition intake and promote overall health. This study introduces a novel food recommender system utilizing artificial intelligence, specifically a genetic algorithm (GA), to intelligently match diverse nutritional needs with available food items. The research incorporates machine learning methodologies, such as collaborative and content-based filtering, to develop a recommendation model. Data from a commercial restaurant, Nutrisurvey, and the Indonesian food composition list inform the nutritional analysis of five menu items. Consumer variability, considering factors like sex, body mass index, medical conditions, and physical activity, are integrated into the GA framework for personalized food pattern matching. The presented results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed model in offering tailored food recommendations for consumers with non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. The multi-objective optimization technique employed in the system ensures a balance between nutritional adequacy and individual preferences. The presented GA-based approach holds promise for promoting healthier food choices tailored to individual needs, contributing to the broader goal of fostering a sustainable and personalized food system.

Abstract

Introduction: Food beliefs and cultural practices have a significant influence on food choices, recommendations, and taboos, with variations shaped by the context of ecological, social, and local knowledge. Rural populations generally adhere to long-established traditional practices, whereas urban environments undergo more rapid dietary transitions driven by globalization and the commercial food industry. This cultural framework shapes individual interpretations of nutritional information, often leading to the rejection of health messages that contradict established belief systems. In Indonesia, considerable ethnic and geographical diversity gives rise to culturally embedded diets that can impact nutritional status; however, the dynamic interactions between food choices, recommendations, and taboos remain insufficiently studied. To address this gap, a qualitative study that explores regional variations in food beliefs and practices in Indonesia, focusing on urban–rural differences across diverse socio-ecological settings was conducted. Methods: In-depth interviews with 28 respondents and focus group discussions with 42 respondents were conducted in four provinces (West Java, Central Sulawesi, East Kalimantan, and West Nusa Tenggara) under the Socio-ecological Model (SEM) framework to investigate how dietary choices, food recommendations, and food taboos are shaped. The study was conducted in 2022. Ethical approval was obtained and all participants provided consent. Results: The findings reveal three main insights: (1) a paradoxical decoupling between dietary diversity and nutritional outcomes, wherein greater dietary diversity in Eastern Indonesia does not directly correlate with better nutrition outcomes; (2) food recommendations for mothers and infants vary, with urban areas favoring commercial products and rural areas relying more on local knowledge; and (3) food taboos persist across regions, particularly in rural Eastern Indonesia, often affecting infant and maternal nutrition. Conclusion: This study contributes to a nuanced, culture-sensitive framework to inform health communication and nutrition policies in Indonesia. These findings highlight the need for culturally sensitive and context specific nutrition policies.

Abstract

Gendered communication inequality in low-income households is often obscured within domestic activities, despite its critical role in shaping household food habits. Women bear the primary responsibility for food provision; however, their voices and knowledge are frequently marginalized due to male dominance. Under conditions of economic constraint, food-related decisions tend to reflect power relations rather than nutritional considerations. This study aims to examine socio-economic conditions, forms of power relations in gendered communication, food decision-making processes, and food habits within low-income households in Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan. The research employs a qualitative approach with a multiple-case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and were analyzed thematically using NVivo 12 Pro. Muted Group Theory serves as the analytical lens to explore patterns of domination, subordination, acceptance, and negotiation that emerge in household food decision-making. The findings reveal that unequal food decisions are not solely a response to economic limitations, but are also shaped by communication practices embedded within gender-based power relations in low-income households. This study highlights the importance of gender-equitable interventions to promote healthier and more sustainable food practices.

Abstract

Stunting is a health issue that threatens the existence and quality of global human resources. The prevalence of stunting in Indonesia remains high. Communication is a medium for addressing the problem of stunting. This study aims to explore and analyze the forms, strategies, content, and effectiveness of health communication factors for families affected by stunting in Indonesia, as well as the influence and role of family characteristics in the stunting management process. The study used a systematic literature review method. A total of 22 articles were analyzed using the PRISMA protocol. The results show that health communication practices regarding stunting in families are dominated by structured interpersonal communication and group communication approaches that are linear, top-down, and instructive. The effectiveness of this approach is limited to increasing knowledge, while its impact on changing attitudes and behavior is still low. The success of communication is determined by family characteristics, parenting structures, and economic constraints. It is recommended that communication through cultural figures and a dialogical approach are more effective alternatives. Therefore, health communication in addressing stunting requires a differential and contextual   strategy that considers the family profile as an active moderator. The implications of this research are the need to design stunting management programs with clear communication protocols, dialogically oriented   communicator training, and collaborative message design that is responsive to family realities.

Abstract

Community-based fisheries development requires effective communication strategies to sustain community participation. The Smart Fisheries Village (SFV) program is a priority initiative of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries that integrates technology, conservation, and coastal community empowerment. This study aimed to analyze the influence of media richness on social presence, psychological empowerment, and community continuance intention, as well as to compare the effectiveness of face-to-face communication and Zoom Meetings within the SFV program. The research was conducted in Bangsring Village, Banyuwangi Regency, using a mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanatory design. Data were collected through a survey of 154 respondents, in-depth interviews, and field observations. Data analysis employed Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results revealed that expression richness and information quality significantly influenced social presence and psychological empowerment (β = 0.467–0.522; p < 0.01). Social presence was found to be a key determinant of community continuance intention (β = 0.643; p < 0.001), whereas information quality did not directly affect continuance intention. Comparative analysis indicated that face-to-face communication was more effective than Zoom Meetings across almost all communication dimensions. These findings suggest that the success of community-based fisheries development programs is determined not only by the quality of information provided but also by the ability of communication media to foster social presence. Therefore, extension and community empowerment policies should prioritize a hybrid communication approach by strengthening face-to-face interaction as the primary instrument for enhancing community participation and program sustainability

Abstract

Abstract

Community-based health volunteer organizations have emerged as critical yet undertheorized sites of organizational communication, particularly in the Global South. This study examines how digital sensemaking processes contribute to the emergence of shared leadership among women Posyandu cadres in Pejaten Barat, South Jakarta, Indonesia. Adopting a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and document analysis involving six cadres at Posyandu Nangka II. Guided by Weick's Organizational Information Theory and the shared leadership framework, the study analyzes how cadres interpret, negotiate, and retain organizational information through both face-to-face interaction and WhatsApp-mediated communication. The findings demonstrate that WhatsApp functions not merely as a message channel but as a digital sensemaking arena, enabling cadres to reduce equivocality, coordinate activities, and construct shared understandings of tasks and responsibilities. These processes facilitate the distribution of leadership functions beyond formal hierarchical structures, allowing active members to assume coordination and decision-making roles when formal leadership is absent or passive. The study argues that shared leadership in this context emerges through continuous communicative practices rather than formal authority. The novelty of this study lies in extending Weick's sensemaking framework into digitally mediated, women-led volunteer settings a context that has received limited attention in organizational communication research. Findings offer practical insights for strengthening women's participation, coordination, and leadership capacity in community-based health programs through digital communication platforms.
