Abstract

This study investigated an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) project centered on authentic scholarship essays created by English as a Second Language (ESL) vocational learners. The project aligned with ESP principles, emphasizing tailored language instruction to meet learners’ communicative needs and genre-specific language skill development. Scholarship essays, authored by ESL learners, represent a nexus of linguistic diversity and academic achievement, offering insights into their language proficiency development. The study explored the linguistic challenges faced by ESL learners in composing scholarship essays within vocational settings. Evaluating project-based outcomes, the research sheds light on the difficulties students encounter in self-assessment, coherence, punctuation usage, and conveying enthusiasm. The findings underscored the importance of a scaffolded approach, providing guidelines, exemplars, and targeted feedback to enhance authentic self-assessment and writing proficiency. The study contributed to understanding the role of ESP projects in developing discipline-specific language skills among vocational students and informs strategies for effective scholarship essay composition in ESL settings.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study analysed the most effective translation methods for Kendrick Lamar’s rap song “Swimming Pools (Drank) – Extended Version,” focusing on bridging linguistic and cultural gaps in song translation. Using Molina & Albir’s translation techniques as the theoretical framework, the research explored how the cultural nuances and lyrical complexity of rap music could be conveyed accurately in the target language. The qualitative approach involved a detailed examination of the song’s lyrics, considering both contextual and cultural factors, and applying selected techniques from the eighteen methods proposed by Molina & Albir. The findings highlighted that the most frequently used translation techniques were amplification, adaptation, substitution, and particularization, as these methods were essential for maintaining the original song’s stylistic elements, cultural essence, and semantic structure. The study aimed to provide insights for English and Tourism students, encouraging a deeper understanding of translation methods and fostering creative approaches for future translation projects. The results were expected to dispel misconceptions about Indonesian rap culture and served as a reference for translating culturally rich artistic expressions. Abstract

This study explores students’ perceptions of learning Language Etiquette in English for Professional Purposes courses in higher education. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and students’ reflective journals from vocational college students. The findings indicate that Language Etiquette learning enhances students’ confidence, politeness, and ability to communicate appropriately in multicultural professional contexts. Role-play, case studies, and simulation activities were perceived as particularly effective; although some students struggled to apply etiquette principles in spontaneous or formal interactions. The study concludes that integrating Language Etiquette into English instruction strengthens students’ pragmatic and intercultural competence and recommends the use of more contextualized and interactive learning activities to improve practical application.   Keywords: Language etiquette, students’ perceptions, intercultural communication, qualitative study, professional English   DOI: https://zenodo.org/records/18084645
