Abstract

Dental caries in children is a serious problem that can be caused by a lack of knowledge, attitudes and actions of parents about maintaining oral health. Empowering posyandu cadres is an effort to prevent dental caries in children. One instrument that can be used is the Healthy Teeth Card (KMGS) to monitor the growth and development of children's teeth from 1 to 60 months of age. This service activity aims to increase the role of posyandu cadres as Dental and Oral Health Cadres (KADEGI) in the growth and development of toddler teeth through KMGS in Karangtengah Village, Baturaden District. This community service implementation method begins with simple socialization and training for 29 posyandu cadres. The next stage is the process of assisting posyandu cadres in filling out the KMGS at Posyandu Munthuk and Karangbatur. The result of this programme is a total of 66 toddlers examined by cadres using the KMGS.

Abstract

Abstract

Child malnutrition can happen because of lack of nutrition during pregnancy. Malnutrition can cause low birth weight in babies. This can cause jaw and alveolar bone abnormalities that can lead to malocclusion, periodontitis, and others. This condition can affect bone cells, such as osteoblast and osteoclast. Vitamin D3 supplementation accompanied by protein realimentation may promote optimum bone growth. This research aims to investigate the effect of protein realimentation and vitamin D3 on osteoblast and osteoclast of malnourished rat pups’ maxilla. In this research, the rat pups were divided into 5 groups: a positive control group (K+), a negative control group (K-), and 3 treatment groups (P1, P2, and P3). The subjects of this research were 10 male and 30 female Wistar rats. A condition of malnutrition was induced in the rat pups and they were given vitamin D3 supplementation with protein realimentation. Rat pups in each group were euthanized on the 22nd day to observe the number of osteoclast and osteoblast in the maxilla. The results showed that the number of osteoblasts between normal and malnourished rats was significantly different (p value < 0.05), but the number of osteoclasts between rats in the control and treatment groups was not significantly different. Administration of vitamin D3 may affect the number of osteoblasts and may not affect the number of osteoclasts on bone. The effective dose of vitamin D3 is 0.36 IU/day.

Abstract

Background: Hepatocyte-derived tumors include hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HCC is the sixth occurrence to occur globally in 2018. When the patient's prognosis is poor, HCC is diagnosed. Due to HCC's impact on the patient's immunity, diseases like candidiasis are more likely to strike. Case Study At RSUD Prof. Dr. Margono Soekardjo, a 66-year-old male patient complained of a white coating around his tongue. The patient's skin and sclera appeared yellow during extraoral examination. A full blood count revealed high levels of leukocytes, RDW, and monocytes but low levels of hemoglobin, hematocrit, erythrocytes, platelets, eosinophils, and lymphocytes. On the dorsum and lateral of the tongue as well as the lower lip mucosa, an intraoral examination revealed erratic white plaques. Oral manifestations are the suspected diagnosis based on the history and clinical presentation. Discussion: HCC patients exhibit an immunodeficiency that leaves them vulnerable to infection. Xerostomia, oral candidiasis, caries, stomatitis ulcers, tooth erosion, and masticatory problems are common oral symptoms. Patients with HCC must have their physical state, disease length and stage, kind of treatment, biological constants, and recommendations from an internal medicine physician taken into account when receiving dental care. Given that topical therapy is the first line of defense against drug interactions, it is advised in this situation. An immunocompromised state brought on by hepatocellular carcinoma leaves the body vulnerable to opportunistic infections like oral candidiasis. Maintaining oral hygiene is a necessary component of the preventative and therapeutic management of candidiasis.

Abstract

Background: Oral health literacy (OHL) has an important role as a medium for health promotion and efforts to prevent oral diseases through oral health behavior changes. Purpose: This study aims to determine OHL and its correlation with oral health knowledge, attitude, and oral health practice among college students. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 583 students of Jenderal Soedirman University in 2020, as the students come from different provinces in Indonesia. The Indonesian Oral Health Literacy Questionnaire was used to assess OHL. A self-designed questionnaire was used to assess oral health knowledge, attitude, and oral health practice. Results: Most students had good OHL, knowledge, and attitude toward oral health (90.7%, 84.6%, and 90.5% respectively). A Pearson correlation test showed a correlation between OHL and oral health knowledge (p = 0.044) and attitude (p = < 0.001). The Fisher exact tests showed a correlation between OHL and snacking frequency, tooth-brushing frequency, tooth-brushing time, and toothbrush changing time. The better the OHL, the better the knowledge and attitude. There was no correlation between OHL and sweet food eating frequency, the use of cleansing aids, dentist visit frequency, and the first action taken when experiencing toothache. Conclusion: OHL has a correlation with oral health knowledge and attitude. However, OHL is only related to some oral health practice indicators. The results of this study are expected to be taken into consideration when formulating strategies to improve oral health within the university.

Abstract

Stunting remains a significant nutritional concern in Indonesia, potentially affecting physical and cognitive development. Stunting may lead to oral health issues, specifically dental caries, due to salivary gland atrophy in malnourished children. While dental caries have multiple contributing factors, breast milk contains protective proteins and antibacterial properties that may influence caries development. This study aims to investigate the association between breastfeeding duration and dental caries occurrence in stunted and non-stunted toddlers. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted using quota sampling of 30 toddlers attending Sumingkir Village Posyandu. Spearman correlation analysis showed no significant correlation between breastfeeding duration and caries in both stunted (p = 0.68) and non-stunted groups (p =0.66). Independent T-test revealed no significant mean differences between the groups (p < 0.05). However, the Mann-Whitney test demonstrated a significant median difference in caries (p = 0.006) between stunting (4(0-6)) and non-stunting groups (0(0-18)). This study concludes that breastfeeding duration showed no correlation with caries in either stunted or non-stunted toddlers; however, nutritional status (stunting) appeared to influence caries occurrence in toddlers.
