Abstract

Introduction: Toothbrushing is a fundamental daily practice for plaque removal. Dental plaque is a complex microbial biofilm that serves as a primary etiological factor for caries, gingivitis, and periodontitis. While manual toothbrushes (MTB) are widely used and considered effective, powered toothbrushes (PTB) are found to be a better alternative with numerous clinical trials proving their efficacy. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of PTB compared to MTB in reducing plaque and gingivitis based on existing literature. Methods: A systematic search was conducted to obtain clinical trials that compares plaque and gingivitis reduction with PTB and MTB usage across all age groups, using three databases - Pubmed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect. Discussion: 18 studies (69%) fully supported the hypothesis that PTB caused significantly greater reduction in plaque and gingivitis than MTB. However, seven studies (27%) found no significant differences between the two types, while one study (4%) partially supported the hypothesis, where it found PTB to be superior for plaque reduction but not for gingivitis. Overall, PTB were superior in reducing plaque and gingivitis, particularly in general populations. However, the benefits were less consistent in specific populations, such as orthodontic patients and individuals with special needs. Both oscillating-rotating and sonic PTB were comparable in their effectiveness. Conclusion: PTB are more effective than manual toothbrushes for improving plaque and gingival health in most populations. Further research is needed to address specific populations and optimise oral hygiene strategies tailored to their needs.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Stunting is a condition where a child's height is insufficient for their age. Stunting in children under the age of five, which can be caused by chronic malnutrition, poses a danger of death. Objective: Stunting can have an impact on dental and oral health by increasing the risk for early childhood caries and delaying tooth eruption, also reducing the number of permanent teeth. Conversely, stunting may be impacted by poor dental health. Literature Study: Periodontal disease can have impact on pregnant women’s fetal growth such as premature birth and low birth weight babies both directly and indirectly. Subsequently, premature babies can increase the risk of stunting. Discussion: One of the stunting behind mechanisms was the discovery of differences in bacterial variations between stunted and normal children. Oropharyngeal bacteria, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis usually found in severe periodontitis, were detected in pregnant women which is likely to disrupt the host's immune homeostasis. Disorders in pregnant women can interfere with the process of tooth development in the fetus. Conclusion: Periodontal therapy in for periodontitis expecting mother, should have decrease the risk of adverse effect of pregnancy such as premature birth and low birth weight, and decrease the risk of having stunting children.

Abstract

Background: Dental and oral health is a healthy condition of hard tissue and soft tissue, and stunting is a problem of malnutrition, which is quite high in Indonesia, namely 37.2% in 2013 and 30.8% in 2018. Objective: This article aims to create a guide for parents of toddlers on how to maintain children's dental health at home, with the hope of contributing to reducing the prevalence of Early Childhood Caries and stunting in toddlers in Indonesia. Methods: The library sources for this article were obtained from several valid literature based on the author's expertise and compiled with theory or research from several journals published by Elsevier, Oxford University Press, Blackwell Munksgaard, Google Scholar, and Pubmed. Results: Nutritional problems are caused by several factors, both directly and indirectly, which are interrelated. Nutrition and oral health have a reciprocal relationship that influences each other. Proper nutrition is needed to maintain healthy teeth and mouth and healthy teeth and mouth to get adequate nutritional intake. Conclusion: Parents, especially mothers, play a key role in maintaining children's dental health and preventing stunting because toddlers cannot yet effectively clean their teeth.
