Abstract

Rice is an agricultural product that is the staple food of the Indonesian people, the quality of rice yields is often unsatisfactory, because some of them have empty grains. So that farmers have to separate the filled rice grains from the empty ones manually, this process is considered less efficient. This process takes quite a long time. Therefore, a machine design is needed that can separate the filled grain from the empty grain. This research aims to design a rice fan machine, to make time efficient and to know the comparison between the manual process and the rice separator machine. This tool serves to separate good quality rice grains from grain (empty or imperfect rice grains), so that crop yields can be optimized. The working principle of this tool generally utilizes the difference in density between rice and grain with mechanisms such as air filtration (blower), vibration, or gravity.  In testing, the rice and grain fan showed a high level of accuracy in separation, with a capacity that can be adjusted based on the needs of farmers. This machine is able to separate rice 10kg/minute, which previously only 6kg/hour, there is an increase in the work efficiency of the tool in separating rice.

Abstract

Friction is one of the unavoidable factors during drilling. If not properly managed, it can significantly reduce the rate of penetration (ROP), especially in horizontal wells. This research aims to examine the effectiveness of the Friction Reduction Tool (FRT) in managing friction without causing damage to the formation. The FRT is designed to reduce friction between the drill string and the wellbore by minimizing contact. However, its performance is often influenced by two main factors: formation characteristics and drilling parameters. This study analyzes Well X-4, which was drilled without FRT, and Well X-5, which was drilled with FRT from a depth of 2837 m (MD). The analysis focuses on the tool’s impact on stick-slip issues, ROP, and mechanical specific energy (MSE). The results indicate that the use of FRT reduced stick-slip levels and MSE, enabling the drill bit to penetrate the formation more easily. Additionally, activating the FRT from the start increased the penetration rate by 18% compared to drilling without it. These findings suggest that the FRT effectively enhances the drilling rate while preserving the formation integrity.

Abstract

Magnesium (Mg) has emerged as a promising biomaterial for implants due to its similarity in physical and mechanical properties to human bone, as well as its ability to degrade safely in the body. However, the main challenges with magnesium are its relatively low mechanical strength and its high tendency to oxidize during the casting process. The use of the Vacuum Induction Casting (VIC) method is crucial to overcome oxidation and porosity issues, resulting in cast products with better integrity. This study aims to design and test the performance of a laboratory-scale vacuum induction furnace for the development of magnesium-based biodegradable implant materials. The furnace was designed using Autodesk Inventor, using a 3.000 W induction module, a water-cooled copper coil, an HA-1 refractory chamber, and a graphite crucible (±52 mL/90 g Mg). Tests showed that the furnace was able to reach an operating temperature of approximately 1.020°C in 2 minutes and 15 seconds, and successfully melted 60 grams of Mg–Gd alloy while the lowest vacuum pressure achieved by the equipment was 0.473 Atm. Rockwell A scale hardness tests yielded average values of 67.1 HRA for Mg–3%Gd and 74.9 HRA for Mg–4%Gd, indicating an increase in hardness with increasing gadolinium content

Abstract

Soil fertility is a basic component to produce quality agricultural products so that farmers enjoy the results they have fought for continuously. Therefore, a tool was created to help the community in the process of agricultural processing, one of which is by producing a tool to detect soil fertility while farmers are cultivating it. The tool is made in a very simple way using a 100 watt light bulb, 1 inch pipe, T pipe, 2 plugs, 2 electrical wires containing one (red 1 meter black 2 meters), light fittings, glue, plaster/duct tape. Soil fertility check tool made as much as 2 pieces. The working principle of this tool uses the principle of ohm's law (Ω), where when a medium has a small resistance value, the electric voltage it transmits. If there are many of these cations in the soil, the soil can be said to be fertile. But on the contrary, if the light is dim or does not light up, then the conducting value in the soil is of little value, and the soil can be said to be infertile. The demonstration of this soil fertility checker was carried out directly to farmer groups in the hill rice fields, Solok city. The demonstration of making this tool is expected to provide information to farmer groups on how to make simple tools and check their soil without having to buy expensive soil pH measuring devices. The main points conveyed: the meaning of soil fertility and a demonstration of how to make a simple soil fertility check tool.

Abstract

The fishermen face various obstacles in the fish drying process, as they still rely on traditional methods that are highly influenced by the weather, take a long time, and are prone to contamination from dust and insects. To overcome these problems, the community service team developed a solar-powered fish dryer equipped with a solar collector. This device is designed to improve the efficiency, quality, and hygiene of the fish drying process. The stages of the activity included field surveys, device design, device manufacturing, training in use, and device performance evaluation. The solar-powered fish drying device is able to overcome the limitations of traditional methods and produce faster and more hygienic drying results. The results of the activity show that the average wet fish catch of fishermen reaches 30 kg, which after drying produces about 8 kg of dried fish. The drying process using solar-powered equipment can produce dried fish within 24 hours, which is much faster than the traditional sun-drying method that takes 48 hours or 2-3 days depending on weather conditions. Time efficiency is increased by up to 50%, while the quality of the fish is better preserved because it is protected from environmental contamination. In addition, this device ensures a consistent level of shrinkage in dried fish, which is around 26-27% of the initial weight, thus providing more stable results for fishermen. Overall, this activity has succeeded in increasing the effectiveness of dried fish processing, improving product quality, and enhancing the competitiveness of coastal fishermen.

Abstract

The Galanggang Raya Farm livestock group in Nan Balimo Village, Tanjung Harapan District, Solok City, faces a major problem in that there are no grass choppers available to support the feed needs of goats and cattle. This problem has resulted in low feed processing efficiency, a high workload for farmers, and limited availability of quality feed. To address this, this community service activity focuses on technological innovation in the form of designing a grass chopper machine that utilizes local resources, both in terms of materials and technical expertise. The primary objective of this community service activity is to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of cattle and goat farming systems by providing a grass chopper machine capable of producing feed cuts of uniform size, thereby supporting improved feed consumption and optimal livestock growth. Additionally, the use of local components aims to reduce production costs, strengthen the local supply chain, and create new job opportunities in the surrounding farming community. The results of this activity demonstrate that the designed grass chopper machine can produce feed pieces of uniform size, in line with the desired specifications. Feed of uniform size has been proven to increase feed consumption by livestock and positively impact the growth of beef cattle. This innovation not only provides a practical and efficient solution for feed processing but also promotes local economic growth through the use of appropriate technology, strengthening farmers' capacity, and improving farm productivity.

Abstract

This activity was carried out in Nagari Cupak, Solok Regency, where local farmers still use traditional tools and manual labor to clean the husks from rice. This manual process not only takes a long time but is also inefficient in separating high-quality rice grains from empty ones. Rice is the primary agricultural product and staple food of the Indonesian people, so the quality of the rice harvest significantly impacts farmers' well-being and food security. However, rice harvests are often unsatisfactory due to the presence of empty grains that must be manually separated by farmers. Therefore, the community service team provided a solution in the form of an electric rice separator to improve work efficiency and harvest quality. This rice separator is designed to automatically separate filled and high-quality grains from empty or imperfect grains. This activity aims to design and implement a rice separator machine that can help farmers in Nagari Cupak optimize their harvest yields. The methods used include field surveys, design, training, and monitoring and evaluation. The field survey involved the team conducting direct observations of farmers regarding the actual conditions they face, designing the machine according to farmers' needs, and then conducting training for farmers on how to use the rice separator machine and monitoring the machine. The results of the tool testing showed that it could separate rice at a capacity of up to 10 kg per minute, a significant increase compared to the manual method, which could only process around 6 kg per minute.

Abstract

Spices have long been an integral part of human life, playing a vital role as traditional medicine, culinary ingredients, and components in cosmetics. Indonesia, particularly within the Southeast Asian region, is regarded as a global hub for high-quality spices. One such spice-rich area is Nagari Koto Anau, located in Solok Regency, known for its production of cloves and cinnamon. However, this significant potential has yet to be fully harnessed by local farmers due to limited processing technology—particularly the lack of spice grinding machines. As a result, farmers are only able to sell their spices in raw form at low market value, which adversely affects their income. To address this issue, the design and implementation of a spice grinding machine that can be operated directly by farmers is essential. The aim of this activity is to accelerate the spice processing workflow, improve work efficiency, and enhance the added value of spice products at the local level. The programme was carried out in Nagari Koto Anau, Solok Regency, West Sumatra Province. The methods employed included interviews, equipment design, and training on the use of the spice grinding machine. Interviews involved discussions with farmers to identify their problems and offer practical solutions, followed by designing the machine based on their specific needs. The training method included a hands-on demonstration on how to operate the spice grinder. The results showed that the spices processed using the grinder became fine and evenly ground, with a production output of up to 20 kilograms.
