Abstract

This article analyzes the polemical character of KH. Misbah Mustofa’s Qur’anic interpretation in Tafsir Al-Iklīl, emphasizing his critique of socio-religious authority. The study investigates how a pesantren-based scholar could produce confrontational interpretations and how this attitude is shaped by his pre-understanding of taqlid. Employing a qualitative textual analysis informed by Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics, this research demonstrates that Misbah conceptualizes taqlid not as blind imitation but as adherence to established opinions of qualified mujtahid imams. This pre-understanding becomes a hermeneutical horizon that leads him to reject non-mujtahid authorities whose fatwas dominate public practice. As a result, his tafsir articulates polemical critiques toward religious leaders, institutions, and popular practices, including the ritual use of loudspeakers, exaggerated veneration of scholars, and the Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur’an (MTQ). Misbah’s interpretation thus reflects a fusion of horizons between the Qur’anic text and the dynamics of Javanese Islamic society, producing a critique rooted in the legitimacy of madhhab authority. Theoretically, this research offers a Gadamerian perspective on taqlid as a productive pre-understanding in Nusantara tafsir studies. Practically, it highlights the role of Qur’anic exegesis as an instrument of socio-religious critique and reform.

Abstract

This paper discusses the Ibn Athiyyah positions towards the concept of Muktazilah theology in his exegesis al-Muharrar al-Wajiz. Although Ibn Athiyyah is an interpreter who has Asy'ariyah school of thought, some scholars such as Ibn Taimiyyah (d. 728), Ahmad bin Hajar al-Haitami (d. 973) and Ibn 'Arafah (d. 803 H) have stated that Ibn Athiyyah interpretation has included the concept of Muktazilah theology. More over, al-Haitami also quoted Ibn 'Arafah's comment that the interpretation of Ibn Athiyyah was more worrying for beginner students than al-Kasysyaf, because al-Zamakhsyari, the author of al-Kasysyaf, was already known as a Mu’tazili, different with Ibn Athiyyah. This research is a type of qualitative research with a library research approach. By using a descriptive analysis, this paper explores Ibn Athiyyah‘s interpretation of the verses which are the evidence for the concept of Muktazilah theology or what is often referred to as al-Ushul al-Khamsah. The results of this study shows that the accusation of i'tizal aimed to Ibn Athiyyah is not true, because his interpretation of theological verses shows that Ibn Athiyyah always approves and justifies the Ash'ariyyah opinions. More over, on several occasions Ibn Athiyyah has refuted the opinions and arguments that used Muktazilah to affirm their theological concept.

Abstract

This article examines the existence of a tradition and the content of the values of the Islamic scriptures (Al-Qur’an and Hadith) inherent and practiced in the Gugur Gunung tradition carried out by the community in Gunungpring Village, Magelang. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed qualitatively through Karl Mannheim’s sociological perspective of knowledge into three meanings: objective, expressive, and documentary. The results of the study are presented as follows. The objective meaning of the Gugur Gunung tradition is a tradition that has existed for a long time and is still being maintained today in various conditions. While expressive meaning can be captured two inherent meanings, namely the meaning of life in the later days and the meaning of the inheritance of past lives from ulama. The documentary meaning of this tradition is to foster harmonization (gotong royong, tolerance, please help) and as a medium of spirituality education for the community in maintaining a tradition. Through reading the Sociology of Knowledge using the three meanings above, it can be understood that the existence of a tradition that can survive in society will always continue to be preserved if two aspects are built that are bound together. First, internally there is a spiritual belief in  the values of the past and life in the later days. Secondly, externally, it deals with the order of socio-religious harmonization in society. The various values inherent in this tradition are in line with the teachings of the Islamic scriptures. Thus these values will continue to be produced and practiced in life in society.
