Abstract

Students still have difficulty translating from native language into the target language. This research is triggered by the problems faced by most sixth semester students based on their previous semester tests, in which meaning is not well transmitted. The result of the previous semester test showed that the translation from English to Indonesian was good enough but it was negative for the translation from Indonesian to English. From the problems / facts above, the question of teaching translation arises, i.e. which should be taught first teaching translation from Indonesian into English then English into Indonesian or the other way around? Conducting qualitative research, the researchers try to prove which of both methods is better applied in teaching translation.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges to educational systems, particularly in reshaping students' learning patterns. This study aims to explore the motivation, emotions, and learning behaviors of students during the first year of the pandemic. A survey approach was employed, involving 383 undergraduate students enrolled in Elementary Teacher Education programs. Data were collected using a questionnaire that assessed self-efficacy, task value, boredom, frustration, elaboration strategies, metacognitive strategies, learning satisfaction, and students’ experiences with virtual face-to-face interactions. Descriptive analysis was conducted to identify patterns and relationships among variables. The results revealed that although students employed self-regulated learning strategies, they remained uncertain about their ability to independently comprehend material without lecturers' guidance. Virtual face-to-face sessions were frequently utilized as a scaffold to ask questions and confirm their understanding of the content. These findings indicate that emergency online learning during the pandemic did not meet the standards of an ideal online learning model. Students tended to maintain conventional learning patterns, exhibited high dependency on lecturers’ guidance, and lacked confidence in their independent learning outcomes. This study concludes that structured online learning approaches are necessary to foster students' learning autonomy. Such strategies should include enhanced self-regulation training to improve confidence and the overall quality of online education in the future.

Abstract

In contemporary secondary EFL (English as a Foreign Language) education, formative assessments play a critical role in enhancing students' language proficiency. This research explores the perceptions and experiences of EFL students in Sidoarjo regarding formative assessment practices. The central research question focuses on how students' perceptions and experiences with formative assessments influence their engagement and language development. Employing a phenomenological approach, qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews and classroom observations with 25 secondary EFL students. Thematic analysis identified recurring patterns and themes, providing a comprehensive understanding of how these students perceive and experience formative assessment practices. Findings reveal that students perceive their experiences with interactive tools like Kahoot! and Quizizz as highly engaging and motivating, which they believe contributes to a more dynamic and participatory learning environment. Additionally, students' experiences with timely and constructive feedback were pivotal in helping them recognize and correct mistakes, thereby improving their language skills. Peer assessment and self-reflection were also seen as fostering a more student-centered learning environment, though some students encountered challenges in consistently understanding and applying these methods. These challenges underscore the need for better support and resources to ensure effective implementation. The research concludes that well-designed formative assessments, when aligned with students' perceptions and experiences, can substantially improve engagement and language proficiency. Recommendations include integrating interactive tools, emphasizing constructive feedback, and promoting peer assessment and self-reflection. Future research should explore the long-term impacts of formative assessments on EFL learning outcomes. This study underscores the transformative potential of formative assessments in EFL education and advocates for continuous support to enhance their effective implementation.

Abstract

Teachers are professionals who are not only required to be able to transfer their knowledge and educate students, but they must also be able to develop their professionalism, one of which is by conducting research. But in reality, teachers at SMPN I Buduran Sidoarjo have very little knowledge about research, especially classroom action research (CAR). The method chosen to overcome this problem is through workshops and PTK article mentoring clinics. The reason for choosing this method was to facilitate teachers at SMPN I Buduran Sidoarjo to practice directly in making CAR articles. The PTK article assistance workshop and clinic which was held on March 11 & 25 2023 was able to motivate teachers at SMPN I Buduran Sidoarjo to do CAR and help increase teachers' understanding of CAR implementation. And through the article assistance clinic, as many as 6 teachers have succeeded in publishing their articles in national journals. Abstract

This study aims to investigate private university students' views on multimodality approach in EFL class. There is still a lot of traditional EFL teaching approach that are not as good at matching different learning styles and capturing students' attention. A multimodality approach provides creative solutions. The participants in this study were 21 non-English department students consisting of eight male students and thirteen female students. The research design examines students' experiences and perceptions of multimodality in the classroom using a qualitative approach and a narrative inquiry method. Reflection and in-depth interviews were used to gather data. Key themes in the participants' experiences were found by applying thematic analysis approaches to the data. The findings show that the multimodality approach helps students' understanding of English language material and helps optimize student engagement. From the students' perspective, there are four main themes, namely an interactive and motivating learning environment, a fun and enjoyable learning environment, diverse learning styles, and self-confidence growth. Further research can explore the effectiveness of multimodal approaches quantitatively to measure the improvement of students’ learning outcomes more objectively. In addition, further studies can involve more participants from various university backgrounds and study programs to expand the generalizability of the findings.
