Abstract

English in Indonesia is still acting as a foreign language in a way that the language is still limited in use to be practiced in schools. English has not been as a second language in Indonesia. As a foreign language, English is still not fully utilized as appropriate in countries native speakers. The L2 still encounter verbal interaction with speakers of foreign languages, especially English teachers and learners in schools that are not in accordance with the function and the situation. The purposes of this study are to (1) describe the utterances used by the lecturer-student in meaningful situation, and (2) to describe a form of speech which implies related to the competence of pragmatic form of representation of (1) deixis, (2) conversational implicatures, (3) pre-supposition, and (4) acts of speech in the discourse of learning instructional interaction in English language education courses. This study uses a qualitative approach to the narrative definition. The data of this study include: (1) verbal aspects of speech acts between lecturer and students situational context, and (2) a form of speech acts that implies in terms of illocutionary and in terms of conversational implicatures. Abstract

This study attempts to perform how Project Based Learning Method is conducted in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) program. It was implemented in ESP program for 8th semester pre-service teachers in English Language Education Department in Universitas PGRI Adi Buana Surabaya. Teaching ESP should be given both theoretically and practically and Project Based Learning method can be applied as effective way for teaching and learning process in ESP program that besides students study all the theories, they also design the task of project to apply those theories of ESP they already studied. In ESP program, the students are assigned to make course books design for several fields of study and practice one of unit materials in front of the class. The books are designed based on the needs of target language which are gained by having interview and observing the target situation. Giving students the book project enables them to boost and stimulate their sense of creativity in creating an ESP course book. However, the teachers’ assistance is important for reducing students’ confusion in deciding practices in the course book.

Abstract

Abstract

Storybooks are important materials for teachers in assisting pupils during the teaching learning process in the classroom especially for the young learners because it gives a motivating and meaningful context for language learning. Nowadays, teachers have to be creative and innovative in creating their own storybooks for the teaching learning process. The project of making storybooks had been given to the undergraduate students of 8th semester (2010) at English Language Department, University of PGRI Adi Buana during TEYL (Teaching English to Young Learners) class. Through the results of storybooks project, this research was intended to know whether the undergraduate students' storybooks met the criteria of a good storybook or not. The authors obtained the data from the questionnaires that distributed to ten English teachers in some elementary schools in Surabaya. The result of this research showed that 75% of students' storybooks met the criteria of good storybooks, such as the content is suitable for age level, interesting, memorable, attractive, and easily to understand by children. The result of creating a storybook hopefully will support and help teachers in the teaching learning process in class.

Abstract

Advertisement seems to play important roles in positioning certain products in consumers’ mind. Mostly, advertisements consist of two; picture and text. The text contains specific discourse that can influence teh readers from their psychological sidde. Usually, theadvertisers suggest that the products can transfer the power, the qualities, the identity, the exclusively, the lifestyle, and the acapability as the problem solver. In this study, the writers reveal the psychological effect that foudn in the advertisement texts.

Abstract

Pemanfaatan teknologi khususnya dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di Indonesia sudah banyak dieksplorasi. Sebagian besar hasil eksplorasi ini mengungkapkan bahwa teknologi dapat memfasilitasi para siswa dalam menguasai materi dan meningkatkan keterampilan berbahasa mereka. Selaras dengan hasil penemuan tersebut, dosen Prodi Bahasa Inggris Universitas PGRI Adi Buana Surabaya menyelenggarakan Pengabdian Pada Masyarakat (PPM) berupa pelatihan pemanfaatan Podcast dengan bantuan aplikasi Audacity dalam pengajaran Listening dan Speaking bagi guru SMA/SMK kota Surabaya. PPM ini dilaksanakan secara daring dan diikuti oleh 95 guru. Setelah selesai PPM, kami ingin mengetahui pandangan guru-guru tersebut mengenai pemanfaatan Podcast dan Audacity dalam pembelajaran Listening dan Speaking. Pre-Test dan kuisioner digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data. Data dari pre-test dan kuisioner ditambah dengan data opini tertulis peserta dianalisis menggunakan konten analisis. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar peserta mempunyai sikap yang positif terhadap penggunaan Podcast dalam pembelajaran listening dan speaking. Hal utama yang mendasari sikap positif mereka adalah fleksibilitas Podcast dalam penggunaannya, fleksibilitas akses, fleksibilitas frekuensi, dan fleksibilitas individu.

Abstract

Writing is one of English skills that should be mastered by students. It is a skill that is more complicated than the others. Moreover, before writing students should master in vocabulay and grammar, because without them, they are not able to write. The present study aimed at finding out whether there is any influence or not telegram in teaching writing on students’ writing achievement at SMKN 8 Surabaya. This research used quantitative approach with true experimental design which consisted of two groups pre-test and post-test. The researcher gave pre-test to students before using telegram as a media and she gave post-test after using telegram for experimental class in XI Fashion Department 3 in SMKN 8 Surabaya. The t-test statistics was used to analyze the data. The result of the study showed that tcalculate was 2.0080 and ttable was 1.99773 with  Df (Degree of freedom) 64 significant rate was 5% or 0.05, tcalculate  was more than ttable. It meant that Ha was accepted and there was influence of telegram on students’ writing achievement. Based on the data anlysis, it could be concluded that telegram could be a suitable media in teaching-learning process, because it gave positive influence on writing.
