Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the Rahn contract at Sharia Pawnshops in Madura, focusing on its alignment with the principles of Maqasid al-Shariah, the socio-cultural and religious dynamics influencing perceptions and implementation, as well as the resulting socio-economic impacts. The study is motivated by academic debates regarding the effectiveness of Islamic financial instruments in achieving societal welfare goals. Using a qualitative approach and a case study method, the research gathers data through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The findings indicate that, in general, the Rahn contract at Sharia Pawnshops in Madura has fulfilled the objectives of Maqasid al-Shariah, particularly in terms of asset protection (hifz al-mal) and social welfare. However, its implementation still faces challenges, especially regarding transparency and financial literacy among the public. Furthermore, the socio-cultural and religious dynamics in Madura play a significant role in shaping public perceptions of Rahn, where local wisdom values and religious norms influence the use of Sharia pawnshop services. From a socio-economic impact perspective, the study finds that Sharia Pawnshops contribute to increased financial inclusion, better access to capital for small businesses, and a reduction in reliance on the conventional interest-based pawn system. However, there are some challenges, such as administrative fees that are still perceived as high by some members of the community and limited access in remote areas. These findings provide valuable insights for developing a more inclusive Rahn system that aligns with local community needs. Policy recommendations include enhancing Sharia financial education, optimizing Rahn-based financing schemes, and strengthening regulations to ensure transparency and sustainability for Sharia Pawnshops in Madura.

Abstract

Agricultural sharecropping partnerships in Indonesia face transparency and fair profit distribution challenges between landowners and farmers, often leading to disputes and inequitable outcomes. This phenomenon is particularly evident in South Sulawesi, where traditional farming practices intersect with Islamic principles. This research aims to explore the practice of sharecropping contracts between land owners and farmers and to investigate its adherence to Islamic principles. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method using thematic analysis to explain the partnership model practiced by local farmers in South Sulawesi and comparative analysis to assess its adherence to the Islamic principle of al-maharajah. Financial analysis is also applied to evaluate the sharecropping scheme's economic viability. The study results found that implementing a sharecropping partnership is economically beneficial to society in increasing income. The sharecropping partnership application follows the local culture inherited decades ago. The output sharing ratio applied is 1:2 or 50:50 depending on which party bears the production costs other than land, complying with the Islamic principle of profit and loss sharing. Preparing the financial record to increase trust from landowners and evaluate the sharing ratio scheme effectively is suggested.

Abstract

The substantial Muslim population in East Java generates significant demand for halal meat products. Manufacturers and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play a pivotal role in shaping the region’s total halal meat production. This study investigates the influence of the number of workers, manufacturing operating income, and seasonal income of halal meat MSMEs on halal meat consumption in East Java province, Indonesia. Secondary data were collected from seven cities across the province over the period 2003–2022, using a purposive sampling technique. The data were analyzed using a static panel regression model via EViews version 12. The findings reveal that only the variable representing total manufacturing income in the halal meat sector has a statistically significant partial effect on overall halal meat consumption in the selected cities. This suggests that manufacturing enterprises possess distinct advantages over MSMEs in contributing to consumption levels. Conversely, the number of workers in the halal meat sector does not exhibit a significant influence on total meat consumption.
