Abstract

The translation process does not only deal with language structure and semantic meaning, but it is also highly influenced by social and cultural meaning. Furthermore, besides transferring the meaning from SL to TL, translation also attempts to carry over the message contained in SL texts to the TL texts with readable and acceptable consideration. This research aims to reveal the translation procedures applied in the French-Indonesian novel, Madame Bovary, especially in translating culture-specific terms. The data were taken from the French novel Madame Bovary written by Gustave Flaubert in 1972 and its translation version written by Santi Hendrawati in 2010. Borrowing with calque and transference, literal translation, cultural equivalent, addition, omission, generalization, descriptive equivalent, naturalization, transposition, and modulation are the translation procedures used by the translator. Different languages with different cultures potentially lead the translator to face some crucial problems in translating texts. One of the best ways to solve that problem is by using appropriate translation procedures.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the democratic leadership style of school principals in managing conflic in educational environments, as well as provide an understanding of how school principals develop an effective leadership approach that is in accordance with legal norms and the moral values of society. This research employs a qualitative method, focusing on literature review as the object of study, which involves data collection by searching for and exploring relevant literature related to the formulation of the problem. The results of the study indicate that the democratic leadership style of school principals has a positive impact on managing conflict, by increasing active participation and collaboration in decision making. This leadership style also creates open communication, mutual trust, and shared responsibility that can reduce tension and make conflict a source of ideas and innovation. In addition, democratic leadership style contributes to increased performance, job satisfaction, and creates a positive work atmosphere, which ultimately supports the achievement of educational goals. This study also emphasizes the importance of implementing a democratic approach in increasing teacher and staff involvement and motivation. Suggestions for further researchers are to explore the impact of democratic leadership style on other aspects of school management, and to conduct additional studies to evaluate the effectiveness of democratic leadership in crisis situations. This is important to obtain a more comprehensive picture of its influence on the quality of education, as well as to understand the limitations of the approach.

Abstract

This research investigates the lexical variations within the dialects of the Madurese language, with a specific focus on the Bangkalan and Sumenep regions. The study seeks to identify and analyze the ways in which lexical items diverge between these dialects, considering how geographic factors play a role in shaping these variations. Through a descriptive qualitative approach, the study employs a combination of observation, interviews, and field notes to gather comprehensive data. The findings demonstrate that although certain lexical items exhibit differences in form across the dialects, they largely retain the same meanings. These lexical variations are primarily attributed to the geographical separation between the regions, which has led to distinct developments in the Madurese lexicon over time. The research underscores the influence of geographic isolation on the evolution of language and provides a deeper understanding of the dynamic relationship between language and region.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the symbolic representation of sensuality in contraceptive advertisements, specifically the "Sutra Gerigi Lebih Berasa #MantapMantapMakinMesra" version of Sutra Condom ads, through Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis. This method is chosen to reveal hidden meanings in the visual symbols and text of the advertisement using concepts such as denotation, connotation, and myth. The research findings indicate that the advertisement positions women as subordinate objects by highlighting sensitive body parts and employing sensual gestures to attract viewers' interest. The discussion reveals that this representation reinforces stereotypes that women merely serve to satisfy men's desires and exploits women's beauty and body shapes for commercial purposes. The conclusion of this study is that such contraceptive advertisements strengthen negative stigmas against women and demonstrate that their beauty and sexual appeal continue to be exploited in modern advertising.

Abstract

This research aims to enrich academic discourse on inclusive language by exploring its role in creating harmony in digital communication through the use of shared, non-offensive and accommodating language. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Triangulation was carried out to identify consistency of data from various sources, thereby increasing the validity of the findings. Data collection methods include interviews, focus group discussions (FGD) with 10 colleagues who have visual impairments, observation, and documentation. As researchers with visual impairments, researchers have a significant role in assessing the accessibility of social media, news platforms, and public service media for users with screen readers. The research results show that common language has been implemented well in various digital communication media. Recommendations for significant improvements were emphasized, especially in the use of accommodating language for accessibility features in news media. It is hoped that the practical implications of this research can provide recommendations to the government and policy makers in managing social media, news media and public service media, to create policies and technical guidelines for implementing a common, accommodating and non-offensive language. These findings will benefit not only individuals with visual impairments, but also people with other disabilities as well as non-disabled individuals, by ensuring inclusive communication for all.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the differences in modality in the statements of two economists regarding the implementation of high US tariffs in Indonesia. Professor of economics at IPB, Didin S. Damanhuri, concluded that the surge in US import tariffs could exacerbate the weakening of the rupiah, reduce purchasing power, and trigger mass layoffs, so a quick and coordinated response is needed to prevent a multidimensional crisis. Similarly, President of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) Said Iqbal warned that the implementation of new import tariffs of 32% from the United States could trigger a second wave of mass layoffs reaching more than 50,000 workers in the next three months due to rising production costs and declining export demand. This study examines the modalities, including aspects of probability, usuality, inclination, and obligation, in the statements of the two economists. The frequency of modality that often appears is probability modulation 3 times and must modulation 10 times. This study using the literature review method contributes to discourse analysis, particularly in the context of foreign policy impact, by showing how linguistic elements such as modality play a role in framing messages and creating public perceptions of economic stability.

Abstract

Ethnobotanical heritages in Indonesia are exceptionally diverse because of the multicultural, multi-religious practice, and acculturation between them. The mega-biodiverse island nation is home to more than 800 ethnicities and naturally acts as sanctuary for the lush tropical ecosystems and its inhabitants. The hospitable nature of Indonesian land provides asylum for numbers of plants, including non-native species. Marigold (Tagetes erecta), a non-native ornamental plant that exhibits distinct showy flowers is cultivated and extensively grown in Indonesian lands. Beside being used as ornamental plants, some of the local communities are using marigold as a part in conducting their traditional ceremonies. This article provides some recorded traditional usage of marigold in traditional ceremonies of Indonesian communities from scientific articles. Significant usages of marigold are notably practiced by Hindu communities in Bali, Java (Tengger) and Lombok as part of their respective traditional-religious ceremonies. Vibrant color of the flower, its availability throughout the year, and easiness of cultivation are desirable traits that keep marigold usages significant. Local beliefs value marigold’s prominent flower color because it represents their Lord. The presence of marigold and its significant usage in the local communities provides space for native species to grow.
