Abstract

Technological developments and advances in the industrial sector have led to the increasing use of metals. This condition causes the availability of metal raw materials to decrease. Overcoming this, the use of composites in the industrial world is a solution. Many composite reinforcing materials use natural fiber materials are often used because they have advantages in strength and stiffness that are higher than other engineering materials. In this study using a factorial experimental method that looks at the effect of the composite ratio (volume fraction) with the use of 2 natural fiber mixtures, namely resam fiber and areca nut on impact strength. This study aims to determine the average difference in each treatment carried out in the impact test. The volume fraction treatment variants used in this study are 25%; 30%; 35% resam fiber and 10% areca nut fiber with a long soaking time of 2% NaOH mixed fiber for 2 hours with the α value used is 5%. It was found that in treatment 1: 2 the average value is different while in the treatment of 2: 3 and 1: 3 the average value of the variables is not different.

Abstract

This research aims to test and evaluate the toughness of composite material reinforced with optical type electronic waste (screen protector) with variations in the length and weight of the screen protector pieces as filler. The impact testing method in accordance with the ISO-179 standard is used to determine the toughness of polyester fiber reinforced composite materials. In this research, the composite variation used was a resin and catalyst ratio of 10:2 with variations in the length and weight of the screen protector pieces as filler using variations of the Taguci method. The limitation of this research is that it only focuses on optical type electronic waste reinforced composite materials (screen protectors), and does not involve testing composite materials with other reinforcements. In addition, this research does not discuss the production or construction process of composite materials, but only focuses on testing and evaluating material toughness. Based on the experimental results of this research, it can be concluded that the impact testing results of the 2 process parameters tested, namely waste length, waste weight, with three levels of factors have a great influence on the impact testing of these factors. In order of the most influential factors on the composition of screen protector pieces as filler in composites, namely: length of waste, weight of waste. The most optimal impact test toughness value occurs in the factorial Taguchi L9 design specimen, namely waste length (12.5 cm), waste weight (62 grams). Safety and environmental protection aspects will be considered in this research. The research will be carried out in compliance with relevant safety standards and taking into account possible environmental impacts. This research has a time limit until the end of the research without involving further development or implementation stages. It is hoped that the results of this research will provide a better understanding of the strength and toughness of optical type electronic waste reinforced composite materials (screen protectors) with variations in the length and weight of the screen protector pieces, as well as contribute to the development of better composite materials in the future.

Abstract

The use of natural fiber-based composite materials is a key focus in reducing dependence on synthetic materials in the automotive industry. This study examines the impact of fiber volume fraction and orientation variations in Pandanus Tectorius fibers on the tensile strength of composites as an alternative material for car dashboards. These fibers were chosen for their good mechanical properties, eco-friendliness, and renewability.  The composites were made using a polyester resin matrix with fiber volume fractions of 3%, 5%, and 7%, and fiber orientations of random, vertical, and horizontal. Samples were prepared using the hand lay-up method following ASTM D 638 standards. Results revealed that both fiber volume fraction and orientation significantly influenced tensile strength. The combination of vertical fiber orientation and a 7% volume fraction yielded the highest tensile strength at 38,95 MPa, while horizontal fibers with a 3% volume fraction showed the lowest at 15,35 MPa. Tensile strength increased with more fibers aligned in the tensile force direction.  For comparison, ABS High Impact plastic used in dashboards has tensile strength ranging from 20 to 40 MPa. Thus, Pandanus Tectorius fiber composites meet strength requirements and present a promising eco-friendly alternative for automotive applications.

Abstract

The use of oil palm fronds is rarely used in the world of research. Oil palm fronds are only used in animal feed such as goats and cows, but in this study, oil palm fronds are used to make composite materials. Composites are a combination of reinforcement and binder. The reinforcement uses oil palm frond fiber while the binder uses resin. In this tensile test to determine the effect of the volume fraction of oil palm frond fiber with a volume fraction of 35%, 40%, and 45% while soaking in 5% NaOH for 2 hours. The results showed a tensile strength of 35% of 30.7 MPa, 40% of 38.8 MPa and 45% of 42.5 MPa. So the highest tensile strength is in the volume fraction of 45% and the lowest tensile strength is in the volume fraction of 35%.
