Abstract

Organic waste originating from restaurants brings problems to the environment because it can cause bad smells and environmental pollution. To reduce this pollution, organic waste can be decomposed and used as feed for black soldier fly (BSF) larvae can be useful as fish or poultry feed with high nutrition. Therefore, this research aimed to determine and study the feeding of organic waste, namely leftover rice and chicken bones, on the growth of BSF larvae. The resesearch was conducted using a completely randomized design (CRD) with 3 feeding treatments consist of leftover rice, chicken bones, and combination of leftover rice and chicken bones; and control treatment used T-51 pig feed. All teratments used triplicates. Data obtained from this study consist of BSF larvae growth parameter for 12 days, and proximate analysis of the feed and BSF larvae. Results showed that larvae fed with a combination of leftover rice and chicken bones was the best treatment to support the groeth of BSF larvae as shown by values of waste reduction index (WRI) 0,034 g/day, substrate reduction 51%, and 98 % of BSF larvae survival rate 98% in 12 days.

Abstract

Organic waste as a by-product of household activities that are produced continuously is still a major problem in Indonesia. Conventional organic waste management still has weaknesses and limitations. Black soldier fly larvae are decomposers that can be used in organic waste management. This study aims to measure the nutrient levels of organic waste used, such as leftover rice, tilapia bones, or a combination of both and study the use of organic waste for the growth of BSF larvae. The research used 150 BSF larvae aged 12 days with three repeats and four test treatments: T51 feed (control), leftover rice, tilapia bones, and a combination of leftover rice and tilapia bones (50:50). The highest levels of carbohydrates and fats were detected in the remaining rice and tilapia bones, respectively. The type of feed has an impact on the nutrients and growth of BSF larvae. The combination treatment produces larvae with the largest biomass and shortest growth time, on the other hand, a single treatment extends the growth time of larvae with a relatively small biomass. The combination treatment between leftover rice and tilapia bones (50:50) is the best type of feed in supporting the growth of BSF larvae, while single feed treatment is considered inappropriate for the growth of BSF larvae.

Abstract

Black soldier flies (Hermetia illucens (Linnaeus)) or BSF are insects that process organic waste, with larvae rich in nutrients and potential as an alternative protein source for food and feed. Astaxanthin, an antioxidant found in plants, algae, and crustaceans, is also assumed to be present in insects like BSF. This study examined the impact of feeding different organic wastes on BSF larval growth and astaxanthin content in its pupae. The experimental design involved four treatments: fruit and vegetable scraps (BS), tofu pulp (AT), rice leftovers (N), and a mix of fruit and vegetable scraps, tofu pulp and rice left-over (C), with animal feed T51 as control. Each treatment was repeated three times. Growth parameters of BSF such as weight, length, and larval characteristics, along with the chemical content of pupae, including astaxanthin, were measured. Pupae were extracted using a triphasic maceration method with n-heptane, ethyl acetate, acetonitrile, butanol-l, and distilled water. Compound identification was done using terpenoid qualitative tests, thin layer chromatography (TLC), and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The findings revealed that fruit and vegetable scraps (BS) significantly increased larval body size, with a weight of 0.09 ± 0.04 grams/larvae and a length of 1.49 ± 0.31 cm/larvae. LC-MS analysis detected lutein derivatives, anisodamine, resveratrol derivatives, dehydroarginine, and astaxanthin derivatives with a molecular mass of 597.23 m/z in BSF larvae fed on fruit and vegetable scraps.

Abstract

The slurry is one of the results of fermentation of organic material from a biogas reactor, which can be used as plant fertilizer because it is rich in macronutrients. The Brazilian spinach plant, known to contain a lot of vitamin E, is suitable for organic cultivation in a hydroponic system, which requires good fertilizer intake. This research aims to study the effect and best dose of liquid organic fertilizer from human waste-based biogas reactor leachate on the growth of Brazilian spinach (Alternanthera sissoo hort) in a hydroponic system. Six treatments were used in this study: K0 (no fertiliser), K1 (500 ppm fertiliser from AB mix), K2 (500 ppm commercial POC), P1 (250 ppm biogas reactor slurry POC), and P2 (500 ppm biogas) with 5 replications for each treatment. Brazilian spinach growth parameters measured included plant height, number of leaves, root length, wet weight, and dry weight. Plant growth parameter data were analyzed statistically using ANOVA and DMRT tests. The nutrient analysis results show that the POC macronutrient levels of human feces slurry does not meet the POC standards, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. However, giving it at a dose of 250 ppm has been proven to support the growth of Brazilian spinach plants.
