Abstract

Organic waste originating from restaurants brings problems to the environment because it can cause bad smells and environmental pollution. To reduce this pollution, organic waste can be decomposed and used as feed for black soldier fly (BSF) larvae can be useful as fish or poultry feed with high nutrition. Therefore, this research aimed to determine and study the feeding of organic waste, namely leftover rice and chicken bones, on the growth of BSF larvae. The resesearch was conducted using a completely randomized design (CRD) with 3 feeding treatments consist of leftover rice, chicken bones, and combination of leftover rice and chicken bones; and control treatment used T-51 pig feed. All teratments used triplicates. Data obtained from this study consist of BSF larvae growth parameter for 12 days, and proximate analysis of the feed and BSF larvae. Results showed that larvae fed with a combination of leftover rice and chicken bones was the best treatment to support the groeth of BSF larvae as shown by values of waste reduction index (WRI) 0,034 g/day, substrate reduction 51%, and 98 % of BSF larvae survival rate 98% in 12 days.

Abstract

Household organic waste can be used as material for organic fertilizer for supporting urban farming activities. Organic fertilizer is beneficial as an effort to reduce waste’s negative impact to environment, and to minimize the use of chemical fertilizers. This research aimed to study the macro nutrient content of fruit peel based-liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) and its effect on the growth of Pakcoy (Brassica chinensis L.). Several fruit peels from household organic waste such as banana, mango, orange, dragon fruit, and papaya peels were used as material for LOF preparation. The research was conducted with completely randomized design (CRD) method with 5 treatments and 5 replications, namely the K- (without fertilizer, only water), K+ (0.2 mL commercial LOF), P1 (0.1 mL fruit peel based-LOF), P2 (0.2 mL fruit peel based-LOF) and P3 (0.4 mL fruit peel based- LOF) for 56 days of observation. The obtained data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Results showed that macro nutrients of fruit peel based LOF did not yet meet the quality standards set by the Ministry of Agriculture, and the dose of 0,4 ml fruit peels based-LOF showed the best effect to support the growth of the Pakcoy plant in all Pakcoy growth parameters. Abstract

Duta Wacana Christian University in Yogyakarta has established a partnership with the Animal Village in Kedung Banteng Village, Moyudan District, Sleman Regency, D.I.Y. This collaboration involves the Product Design lecturers, Biotech, and two Product Design students from DWCU, resulting in training for creating souvenirs. The presence of the Animal Village at RT 06 / RW 16 Kedung Banteng is unique and captivating. It began with a resident's hobby of caring for animals, which evolved into an educational eco-tourism village for local schools and communities from various regions. The existence of its place offers the opportunity to learn about various protected animal species, their habitats, and plants cultivated to support their survival. This inspired the academic team to assist in developing the educational eco-tourism village through promotional strategies using memorable souvenirs that can serve as an identity (branding) to be cherished and recognized more widely. The activities include skills training and knowledge about pottery and batik, which are part of Java's rich cultural heritage, utilizing the natural resources available in the area. The well-planned souvenir concept will serve as innovative visual branding and an effective promotional media. This service is conducted through technical training, involving direct observational data collection, interviews, and participatory methods to create products that serve as promotional media and examples for other villages to love and protect nature.
