Abstract

Abstract

Coffee skin is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that are beneficial for skin health and softness. This study aims to determine the ethanol extract of coffee skin (Coffea arabica L.) formulated in solid soap preparations and effective concentrations of ethanol extract of coffee skin (Coffea arabica L.) concentrations of 2.5% (F1), 5% (F2), and 7.5% (F3) as a natural skin moisturizer in solid soap preparations. This study used an experimental method. Wet sorting, drying, characteristics of simplicia, phytochemical screening, maceration with 70% ethanol, making coffee skin extract with a concentration formulation of 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5% as a blank is a solid soap preparation without the addition of coffee skin extract, examination of the coffee skin extract solid soap preparation, namely organoleptic test, soap pH measurement, homogeneity test, irritation test, and finally humidity test. The four solid soap formulas are homogeneous. pH 9.2-10.5. The results of increasing the humidity of solid soap preparations from 25 volunteers for 28 days from ethanol extract of coffee skin (C. arabica L.) with each concentration were F1 (24.87%), F2 (35.40%), F3 (61.61%), and blank (23.84%). Most preferred in F1. The results of the Post-Hoc Test Turkey HSD analysis after observation from week I to week IV showed a p value> 0.05 meaning there was no significant difference in each formulation in the humidity test. Coffee skin extract (C. arabica L.) can be formulated into solid soap preparations.

Abstract

This study was aimed at formulating Salak fruit extract in a cream formulation and testing its anti-aging effectiveness. Flavonoid compounds in salak fruit are efficacious as antioxidants that are able to neutralize free radicals so they can improve signs of aging on the skin such as dry skin and enlarged pores and wrinkles. This research was conducted at the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Laboratory of Sari Mutiara Indonesia University in June-August 2023. The tools used were skin analyzer and moisture checker. Salak fruit samples were obtained from the Sihopur village Tapanuli Selatan regency, North Sumatra. The irritation test of three volunteers used salak extract cream with the highest concentration of 7%. The anti-aging activity test used 15 volunteers. Parameters measured include moisture content, number of pores and wrinkles. Statistical data was analyzed using the SPSS method. The results show that the ethanol extract of Salak fruit leaves can be formulated in a homogeneous type A / M cream dosage form, with a pH of 6,3-5,2, a viscosity of 19.000-47.000 cps, non-irritating and stable in storage for 12 weeks. The results of the analysis with the skin analyzer showed that the skin condition changed for the better, namely increased water content 32,3%, reduced pores 10,4% and wrinkles 13,2%. Cream preparations with a concentration of 7% show the best anti-aging effectiveness.

Abstract

One of the medical needs whose demand continues to increase is wound dressings. The wound cover must also be non-toxic, non-allergenic, made of widely available biomaterials, and have antibacterial properties that can prevent infection of the wound. Chitosan is known to have wound healing activity by acting as a blood-clotting agent and stimulating the formation of new tissue, and silver nanoparticles have good antibacterial activity. Silver Nanoparticles and Chitosan with Cellulose Nanofibers carriers (SNCCN) are made in the form of patches with the ratio formula between cellulose nanofibers and chitosan/silver nanoparticles is 1:9, 2:8, 3:8, 4:7, 5:5, 6:4, 7:3, 8:2, 9:1, and 10:0. Then the antibacterial activity was tested against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli to find the best formula for antibacterial activity. The analysis showed that the SNCCN patch with a ratio of 9:1 had the best antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (13.8±0.05 mm) and Escherichia coli (12.5±0.05 mm). It can be concluded that patch Silver Nanoparticles and Chitosan with Cellulose Nanofibers carriers (SNCCN) have good antibacterial activity at a concentration of 9:1 in the category of strong inhibition (10-20 mm).

Abstract

Doxorubicin, a well-known chemotherapy drug, is associated with cardiac toxicity primarily due to oxidative stress. This oxidative stress leads to the production of reactive oxygen species and a subsequent decline in antioxidant levels. As doxorubicin induces the formation of free radicals and decreases endogenous antioxidants, it triggers various hematological and biochemical abnormalities. Consequently, the use of antioxidants has been proposed as a strategy to mitigate this damage. This study focuses on the administration of ethanol extract from Andaliman (EAF) fruit, recognized for its rich array of metabolites and antioxidant properties, which may serve as a cardioprotective agent against the adverse effects of doxorubicin. The research involved comprehensive observations, including hematological and clinical chemistry examinations. The findings indicate that EAF demonstrates protective effects by enhancing hematological and clinical chemistry parameters in male Wistar rats subjected to doxorubicin. Notably, these improvements were statistically significant when compared to the control group. Given its promising results, further exploration of EAF as a protective agent for hematological and biochemical health warrants attention and development.
