Abstract

Omotenashi, the Japanese philosophy of selfless and wholehearted hospitality, has become a central element of Japan’s national tourism identity. However, its intangible and culturally nuanced nature makes it difficult to translate into clear and appealing messages for global audiences. This study explores how the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) navigates this challenge through strategic visual and textual communication. Using a semiotic analysis, the research examines signs, symbols, and meanings embedded in JNTO’s promotional videos and official website content. The analysis identifies a consistent visual vocabulary that represents Omotenashi: respectful bowing, meticulous food presentation, orderly interior spaces, and serene natural settings. These images act as symbolic cues that communicate humility, harmony, and attentiveness—core values of Omotenashi—without requiring explicit explanation. JNTO pairs these visuals with carefully selected textual expressions such as “heartfelt,” “authentic,” and “crafted with care,” which help emotionalize the viewer’s perception and frame Omotenashi as a warm, spiritual, and culturally grounded experience. The findings indicate that JNTO deliberately simplifies and aestheticizes Omotenashi to make it more accessible to international audiences. Rather than attempting to convey the full cultural complexity of this practice, JNTO constructs a romanticized narrative that positions Omotenashi as both a distinctive and desirable tourism offering. This strategy allows the organization to effectively “sell the spirit” of Japan by transforming a deeply embedded cultural value into a consumable tourism product. The study demonstrates how intangible cultural concepts can be reinterpreted through semiotic design to strengthen national tourism branding.

Abstract

Kampung Wisata Titik Nol in Central Java has significant potential for developing special-interest tourism, particularly nature-based and outdoor sport tourism. However, this potential has not been optimally utilized due to limited community capacity in designing structured and market-ready tourism products. This community service program aims to enhance the capacity of local tourism managers and youth organizations in packaging sustainable and competitive sport tourism packages. The program was conducted at Joglo Gumregah from August to November 2024 using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. The implementation was carried out in three phases: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The preparation phase included field observation, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and coordination with village authorities and community leaders. The implementation phase involved in-depth interviews and mentoring activities in developing sport tourism packages. The evaluation phase was conducted through interactive dialogues with stakeholders to refine the developed packages. The results indicate an improvement in participants’ understanding and skills in designing integrated and locally based sport tourism packages. The resulting packages are expected to serve as references for sport tourism development and to support community empowerment and economic sustainability in Kampung Wisata Titik Nol.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to determine the implementation of tourism components in the Srikeminut, Kebonagung, and Wukirsari tourist villages in Imogiri District based on the 6A component approach (attraction, accessibility, amenities, accommodation, activity, and ancillary services) of tourism. The three tourist villages are within the same Imogiri area and have unique tourist potential, offering opportunities to be developed as sustainable tourist villages. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach to gain an in-depth understanding of real conditions in the field, employing data collection techniques such as in-depth interviews with tourism village managers and visitors, documentation, field observations, and literature review. Data validity is ensured using triangulation techniques. The results show that the three tourist villages have applied the 6A components with different characteristics, the main features of which lie in the attraction and tourism activities based on local potential and community participation. However, there are still several aspects such as accessibility, supporting facilities, and institutional strengthening that require improvement. This study is expected to serve as a reference for the development of other tourism villages in Indonesia to be more prepared and competitive in the global tourism industry.

Abstract

Tourism villages in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, promote economic diversification, cultural preservation, and community empowerment. However, research lacks connection between heritage and innovative business strategies, affecting livelihoods. This research aims to explore the connection between cultural heritage and innovative business strategies in tourism villages in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, focusing on sustainable livelihoods and entrepreneurial ecosystems. The study employed VOSviewer analysis and a systematic literature review to explore entrepreneurial potential in tourism villages in Bantul Regency, utilizing Scopus and Google Scholar databases by using Publish or Perish application. 41 research articles were derived after conducting PRISMA analysis with some inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results show that the network visualization shows a central hub of medium to large-sized nodes, including "village," "tourism," and "Bantul Regency." Five clusters are identified, with gaps in cross-cluster integration, government-economic nexus, and capacity building metrics. The study emphasizes the need for quantitative metrics on capacity-building effects and interdisciplinary integration between cultural studies, business innovation research, and public policy analysis. It also calls for methodological advancement in measurement instruments and evaluation frameworks for rural tourism entrepreneurship.

Abstract

The tourism sector in Yogyakarta is highly vulnerable to seasonal changes and extreme weather due to its heavy reliance on outdoor attractions, which negatively impacts destination image. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of indoor tourism destinations in mitigating the risks of extreme weather and maintaining Yogyakarta's tourism image. A quantitative explanatory approach was employed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) based on Partial Least Squares (PLS). Data was collected from a sample of 400 domestic tourists who visited at least two indoor destinations in Yogyakarta during the peak rainy season. The analysis reveals that the effectiveness of indoor facilities and weather anticipation capacity directly and significantly affect tourism image with path coefficients of β = 0.285 and β = 0.240, respectively. The combination of indoor facilities, weather mitigation, and tourist experience explains 71.5% of the variance in destination image (R² = 0.715). Furthermore, tourist experience acts as a significant partial mediator between indoor facilities and tourism image (β = 0.171), and between weather anticipation and tourism image (β = 0.157). In conclusion, developing climate-responsive indoor infrastructure, combined with high-value tourist experiences, is a fundamental strategy for building regional tourism resilience.
