Abstract

This study aims to examine whether the use of the Text Twist Game can improve the vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 15 Palu. A quasi-experimental research design was employed involving two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The study used quantitative research with purposive sampling. Class VII A with 30 students was the experimental group, and Class VII B with 30 students was the control group. A vocabulary test was used as the instrument for data collection, administered both before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the treatment. The experimental group received instruction using a Text Twist Game, while the control group was taught using an explanation technique. The findings show that the post-test mean score of the experimental group is 56.33 while the control group’s post test mean score is 30. Additionally, the statistical analysis revealed that the value of the t-counted is greater (97.20) than the value of the t-table (0.117). It indicates that the vocabulary mastery of the experimental group outperformed that of the control group after getting treatment. In other words, the use of Text Twist Game is effective to improve students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This research used correlational quantitative research design. This research aims to find out whether there is a positive correlation between students' self-talk and their speaking’s ability. The sample of this research consists of 30 students from the academic year 2021/2022 of English Education Study Program at Tadulako University. The sampling technique used in this study is simple random sampling. The instruments used to collect data were  a speaking test and a questionnaire. The method used to analyze the correlation between students' self-talk and students' speaking ability is the Pearson product-moment correlation and simple linear regression test. The result of this research showed that there is a significant correlation between self-talk and students’ speaking ability. This correlation is indicated by a Pearson correlation value of 0.883, which means there is a very strong correlation between the two variables. The value of t-count is 9.975, higher than the t-table 2.048. This implies that students’ self-talk can influence the development of speaking ability. The higher the positive self-talk that students have, the better their speaking ability will be. Conversely, the higher the negative self-talk that students have, the lower their speaking ability will be.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of English podcasts as a medium for improving the listening comprehension of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Banawa Tengah. Motivated by students’ low listening proficiency and limited exposure to authentic English audio, this research applied a quantitative quasi-experimental design with two groups: an experimental class that received podcast-based instruction over six sessions, and a control class that did not use podcasts. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests to measure listening gains. The results showed that the experimental group’s mean post-test score increased from 37 to 52, with nine students meeting the minimum passing standard, while the control group’s scores remained largely unchanged. A t-test revealed a significant difference (t = 7.39 > t-table = 2.009, p < 0.05). These findings demonstrate that integrating podcasts into English instruction can significantly enhance students’ listening comprehension.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to prove that the use of English songs can improve simple past tense mastery used in recount text. The researcher used quasi experimental research design. The population of this research is the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Sigi, and the samples were the students of XI IPS 2 and XI IPS 4 with the total number of students is 53. The researcher applied purposive random sampling technique. The data were collected through the complement test that consisted of pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed statistically in order to find out the significant difference of the students’ achievement before and after treatments. The mean score of the pretest of experimental group is 33.78, while the control group is 32.04. The mean score of the posttest of experimental group 74.74, and the control group is 42.27. After analyzing the data t-counted (15.98) is greater than t-table (1.676) by applying 0.05 level of significance and 51 degree of freedom (df). Based on the result of research, it means that the hypothesis is accepted. In conclusion, using English songs can improve students’ simple past tense mastery used in recount text of the eleventh grade at SMA Negeri 2 Sigi

Abstract

This research aims to determine if the implementation of the Experience Text Relationship (ETR) method can improve the reading comprehension of grade eight students of SMP Negeri 14 Palu. The sample for this study consisted of the grade eight students Slamet Riyadi as the control group and grade eight students Pattimura as the experimental group, selected using cluster random sampling. The researcher used pencil and paper with a test method as the instrument for data collection in the pretest and posttest techniques. Based on the test results, the average pretest score in the control group was 64.1, while in the experimental group, it was 49.7. After treatment in the experimental group, there was an increase above the control group, as evidenced by an increase in the posttest. The posttest score in the control group was 77.13, while in the experimental group, it was 80.2. Furthermore, the researcher calculated the t-counted to be 5.625, applying a significance level of 0.05 with degrees of freedom (df) 58, and the t-table value was 1.684. This means that the t-value is greater than the t-table value, leading to the conclusion that the Experience Text Relationship method can improve students' reading comprehension more effectively.

Abstract

Mastery of grammar, particularly subject-verb agreement in the simple present tense, remains a persistent challenge for Indonesian EFL learners due to structural differences between English and Bahasa Indonesia. Traditional methods often fail to foster deep grammatical competence. In response, this study explores the effectiveness of integrating self-assessment (SA)  as a reflective learning strategy to enhance grammatical accuracy. Employing a quasi-experimental design, this study involved 38 third-semester English education students at a public university in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Participants were divided into an experimental group (n=18) that received SA-integrated grammar instruction and a control group (n=20) that received conventional instruction. Over eight sessions, students in the experimental group engaged SA activities using SA guidelines and reflection tasks while learning subject-verb agreement in the simple present tense. Pre- and post-tests were administered, and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent sample t-tests.  The findings revealed that the experimental group's learning achievement outperforms its counterpart, with mean post-test scores of 17.17 and 13.15, respectively. The T-test results confirmed a statistically significant difference in grammar achievement between the groups (p<0.001), favoring the SA-integrated instruction. These findings suggest that SA is an effective strategy for improving student grammar outcomes in using subject-verb agreement correctly This study underscores the value of SA as a practical and impactful approach in EFL grammar instruction and supports its integration into learner-centered curricula, particularly in alignment with Indonesia’ Kurikulum Merdeka.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to prove whether the use of English comic strips can develop vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of MTs Negeri 2 Palu. This research used a quasi-experimental research design which involved two groups experimental and control groups. The sample was class VIII B as the experimental group and class VIII A as the control group. In collecting the data, the instrument used an exercise for each meeting. Both experimental and control group given pre-test and post-test. The experimental was given treatment while the control treated by regular teaching. The result showed that the students’ mean score of the experimental group was 66.03 on the pre-test and 82.97 on the post-test. Furthermore, the students’ mean score of the control group was 64.26 on the pre-test and 75.5 on the post-test. Consulting to the t-table value by applying degree of freedom (df) and 0.05 level of significance, the researcher found that the value of the t-counted (2.02) is higher than the t-table (1.651). It means that the hypothesis is accepted. In other words, the use of English Comic Strips can develop vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of MTs Negeri 2 Palu. The implication of applying comic strip in teaching vocabulary is that comic strip is able to attract students’ attention and help students enhance vocabulary.
