Abstract

As English becomes the lingua franca of professional communication, many higher education institutions still overlook the importance of equipping EFL learners with targeted speaking skills for real-world occupational settings. This study responds to that pressing educational need by exploring the effectiveness of structured speaking worksheets in enhancing students' speaking proficiency and overall engagement in a professional communication course. Conducted through a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design, the research involved 60 undergraduate English Education students at Tadulako University who were divided into an experimental group using speaking worksheets and a control group receiving conventional instruction. Students' speaking performance was evaluated across five critical dimensions: grammar, pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and contextual appropriateness. Engagement levels were measured using structured questionnaires. The results revealed a clear improvement in the speaking abilities of students who used the worksheets, accompanied by stronger motivation, enhanced self-confidence, and increased critical thinking. These gains, when compared to the outcomes of the control group, indicate the pedagogical value of incorporating structured, context-driven speaking materials into classroom instruction. Rather than functioning as simple practice tools, speaking worksheets emerged as dynamic resources that promoted learner agency, active participation, and deeper communicative competence. This study advances English for Professional Purposes by providing empirical support for using responsive, scenario-based materials in EFL instruction. It highlights the value of task-based, learner-centered approaches that connect academic learning with future workplace communication.

Abstract

This study focuses on the effectiveness of using the Duolingo application in teaching vocabulary to grade XI. This study used a quasi-experimental design with two classes: experimental and control. The experimental class received treatment using Duolingo media, while the control class was taught using conventional media. Pre-tests and post-tests were used to assess improvements in students’ vocabulary. The results of the study indicate that the use of the Duolingo application is effective and can improve students’ vocabulary, as evidenced by the average score of the experimental class increasing from 78.10 to 95.5. The Mann-Whitney test showed a significant difference between the two classes (p<0.05), indicating that the use of the Duolingo application is effective in teaching vocabulary. In addition, the findings reveal that students in the experimental class demonstrated higher levels of engagement, motivation, and confidence when learning new vocabulary through the application. The interactive features of Duolingo, such as gamification and immediate feedback, contributed to a more meaningful learning experience. These advantages suggest that mobile-based language learning tools like Duolingo can play a significant role in enhancing language acquisition in formal educational settings. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers consider integrating technology-enhanced instructional media to complement traditional teaching methods in order to maximize students’ outcomes in vocabulary mastery.

The objective was to determine whether the use of picture cards as a teaching medium could significantly improve students’ vocabulary mastery. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design involving two groups: an experimental group taught with picture cards and a control group taught with conventional methods. The sample consisted of 46 students, selected randomly and divided equally into experimental and control classes. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, and analysed using a t-test. The findings revealed that the experimental group’s mean score increased from 62.48 in the pre-test to 81.91 in the post-test, while the control group only improved from 58.09 to 65.87. The t-counted value (4.38) exceeded the t-table value (1.681) at the 0.05 significance level, confirming that picture cards had a significant positive effect on vocabulary mastery. Beyond score improvement, students in the experimental class also showed greater participation and motivation during learning activities. These findings suggest that visual media, particularly picture cards, can be effectively integrated into EFL classrooms to foster engagement and enhance vocabulary learning outcomes on a broader scale.

Abstract

Many learners continue to struggle with English speaking skills, particularly in achieving accuracy and clarity of comprehension. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the Song Interpretation Method on enhancing the speaking performance of tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Sindue during the 2025/2026 academic year. The research focused on two main aspects of speaking ability: accuracy and comprehensibility. A quantitative approach was implemented through a quasi-experimental design involving pre-test and post-test control groups. The sample consisted of two classes selected through random sampling, with one designated as the experimental group and the other as the control group. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS software, and the Mann–Whitney U Test was employed to assess the differences between the two groups. The findings indicated an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.035, which is lower than 0.05, signifying a significant difference between the post-test scores of the groups. Consequently, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, confirming that the Song Interpretation Method substantially enhanced students’ speaking proficiency, particularly in terms of accuracy and comprehensibility. These findings suggest that integrating songs into English instruction can foster communicative competence, increase classroom interaction, and motivate learners in EFL contexts.
