Abstract

Letters are one of the written communication media used in interaction. In writing letters, especially formal letters, it is not just the contents of the letter that must be considered, but other supporting aspects must also be considered, such as the form of letters and letter editors regarding the use of diction, spelling, and effective kalimsat. During this time, there are still many government and private employees at the lower levels who do not yet know the procedures for writing official letters that meet standard standards. They only make letters by copy and paste from the previous letter examples. They do not have special knowledge and guidelines in making official letters. This is evident from the results of an error analysis in an official letter made by the village apparatus in the Pameungpeuk sub-district of Garut district. The analysis showed that there were inconsistencies in the use of letter forms and letter editor errors including the use of diction, spelling, and effective sentences. In connection with this problem, a formal letter writing training was conducted with the concept of andragogy in the village apparatus in the Pameungpeuk sub-district of Garut district. The training results showed an increase in knowledge and practice in making official letters in accordance with the standard rules for writing formal letters.

Abstract

Social media is a very important part of the life of modern society. Even though it is not a basic need, in this era, activities in social media have become an almost routine part of people from various backgrounds. The younger generation as part of society that is most responsive to technological advances has a high intensity in using social media. However, the level of thinking maturity of the younger generation who is still in the process of development often makes them less wise in using social media. Therefore, this community service activity aims to provide counseling to the younger generation to be wiser in responding to various issues that develop on social media, and can respond to them with smart steps. This community service activity is expected to provide benefits in the form of reducing social cases caused by the behavior of using social media that is not wise.

Abstract

This study seeked to reveal the meaning behind the speech language used by the Masters Students of Indonesian Education who were multicultural at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) in the study of language as a semiotic system. As stated by Lyons (1979: 74) that the language is a semiotic system (language is semiotic system) consisting of verbal language that is informative-communicative and informative nonverbal language. The results showed that the use of speech of theMasters students at Indonesian Education Study Program at UPI particularly on the class B-2011 in terms of communicationwas communicative-informative. In addition, there was a relationship between verbal and nonverbal language. The relationship between the verbal and nonverbal was mutual support between the two. Verbal supported nonverbal communication such as nodding, hand gestures, facial gaze, and others. Similarly, supported nonverbal communication in the form of verbal intonation, tone, tempos, and prosodic. The implication of this research in education is that the cultural and psychological factors affect the way people communicate in the form of verbal and nonverbal. Therefore in educational communication both factors that must be considered in order to avoid culture shock.

Abstract

Abstract Sekolah Menengah Pertama Negeri (SMP N) 4 Bayongbong is a secondary school located in the Cilimus area, Bayongbong. Based on observations and interviews that have been conducted, there are problems at the school, namely regarding the lack of knowledge about media literacy and management of website content from teachers. The purpose of this activity is to provide training in website content creation and media literacy so that schools can independently manage the school website. The service activities are divided into several stages, namely need assessment, training on website content and media literacy, and follow-up to teachers of SMP N 4 Bayongbong. The result of this activity is that teachers can understand how to manage website content and get increased media literacy. Abstrak Sekolah Menengah Pertama Negeri (SMPN) 4 Bayongbong adalah sekolah lanjutan pertama yang berada di daerah Cilimus Bayongbong, Garut. Berdasarkan observasi serta wawancara yang telah dilakukan, terdapat permasalahan di Sekolah tersebut, yaitu mengenai kurangnya pengetahuan mengenai literasi media serta pengelolaan konten website dari para guru di sekolah tersebut. Tujuan kegiatan ini adalah memberikan pelatihan pembuatan konten website maupun literasi media agar sekolah dapat mandiri dalam mengelola website sekolah. Kegiatan pengabdian terbagi menjadi beberapa tahap, yaitu pengelompokan, pelatihan konten website dan literasi media, serta follow up kepada guru SMPN 4 Bayongbong. Hasil kegiatan ini adalah guru-guru dapat memahami mengenai cara pengelolaan konten website serta mendapatkan peningkatan literasi media.

Abstract

Di era literasi media modern saat ini, pesan media mempunyai peran yang sangat kuat dalam membentuk perilaku masyarakat. Derasnya informasi yang beredar di masyarakat belum diimbangi dengan keterampilan berpikir kritis dan literasi media sosial. Kesalahan dalam menafsirkan sebuah wacana teks berita dapat menimbulkan ‘krisis komunikasi’ dengan menyebarkan informasi yang salah secara cepat. Keterampilan mahasiswa berpikir kritis dan memahami struktur teks wacana sangat penting untuk mendukung prinsip belajar sepanjang hayat dan sebagai bagian pembelajaran kepada warga negara. Penerapan metode analisis wacana kritis berbasis literasi media sosial dapat dijadikan solusi untuk meningkatkan kualitas mahasiwa dalam memahami struktur wacana, misalnya: mengklasifikasikan bagianpendahuluan, isi, dan penutup serta menganalisis kode media dan kompetensi untuk menafsirkan beberapa makna dan pesan teks berita sehingga mahasiswa dapat mengevaluasi pesan wacana tersebut. Metode penelitian yang digunakan yaitu eksperimen sejati dengan desain Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. Teknik pengumpulan yang digunakan yaitu tes, observasi, walkthrough, wawancara, dan angket. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: 1) profil kemampuan mahasiswa memahami struktur wacana sebagian besar berada pada kategori sedang 38,5%, dengan rentang skor 50-69. Kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol memiliki kemampuan awal yang sama; 2) penggunaan metode analisis wacana kritis berbasis literasi media sosial mampu meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa memahami struktur wacana secara signifikan daripada metode pembelajaran konvensional

Abstract

The research entitled Sanity Distortion and Analysis of Main Character Development in the Novels Assavella and Ballerina (Assavella 2): A Literary Psychology Perspective aims to reveal the form of sanity distortion and the psychological development of the main characters through a literary psychology approach. These two Wattpad novels depict trauma, inner conflict, and social pressure that affect the mental condition of the characters. This research is a literature study with a qualitative descriptive method. Data in the form of narrative texts, dialogues, and monologues were collected through reading and note-taking methods. The results of the study show that the main character experiences sanity distortion due to past trauma and social pressure in Assavella, then shows the process of recovery and self-acceptance in Ballerina (Assavella 2). Thus, both novels represent a psychological journey from destruction to awareness and self-healing.

Abstract

This article examined the construction of emotional and cultural meanings in the novel Lembayung Senja using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, and data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques to identify signs that constructed meaning within the narrative. The analysis focused on three levels of signification, namely denotation, connotation, and myth, as represented through symbols such as twilight imagery, characters’ gestures, and emotional metaphors. The findings indicated that these signs not only reinforced the narrative atmosphere but also reflected the characters’ inner journeys, experiences of loss, and underlying cultural values. The emotional and cultural meanings constructed in the novel were interconnected and produced multilayered interpretations, which expanded readers’ understanding of the themes developed by the author. The study demonstrated that Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach was effective in revealing implicit meanings in literary texts and could be applied to other literary works for deeper interpretative analysis.

Abstract

Song lyrics constitute a distinctive form of literary expression in which linguistic structure plays a crucial role in shaping meaning and emotional resonance. This study examines the syntactic structure and distribution of clause types in the song lyrics of Rahasia Pertama, the debut album by Rony Parulian. The research focuses on identifying and classifying clause types that appear in the lyrics, namely verbal clauses, nominal clauses, adjectival clauses, prepositional clauses, and numeral clauses, based on their formal characteristics and syntactic functions. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the data were obtained through careful reading and systematic note-taking of the lyrics from all eight songs in the album. The collected data were then categorized and interpreted according to established syntactic theories. The findings reveal a total of 213 clauses distributed across four clause types: verbal clauses, nominal clauses, adjectival clauses, and prepositional clauses. Verbal clauses are the most dominant, indicating that the lyrics predominantly emphasize actions, processes, and emotional dynamics experienced by the lyrical subject. Nominal and adjectival clauses function to express states, identities, and emotional qualities, while prepositional clauses contribute metaphorical spatial and emotional nuances. Notably, numeral clauses are entirely absent from the album, suggesting that numerical expressions are not central to the construction of meaning in these song lyrics. These results demonstrate that syntactic structure significantly contributes to the expressive and poetic power of song lyrics. Through varied clause constructions, the album conveys themes of love, longing, loss, and emotional endurance in a nuanced manner. This study highlights the importance of syntactic examination in understanding how popular song lyrics function as literary texts and affirms the relevance of linguistic analysis in contemporary literary and cultural studies.

Abstract

This study analyzes the layers of meaning in song lyrics using Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, which includes denotation, connotation, and myth. The research aims to reveal how linguistic signs in the lyrics function as cultural representations reflecting identity, emotional expression, and social narratives. A qualitative descriptive method was employed by examining textual signs, connotative associations, and cultural myths embedded in the song. The findings indicate that the lyrics convey not only literal meanings but also symbolic meanings shaped by local cultural contexts. At the denotative level, the lyrics present explicit narrative elements, while at the connotative level, figurative language and cultural references reveal deeper emotional and ideological meanings, and at the myth level, the song reproduces collective values, cultural identity, and social worldviews. Furthermore, the analysis shows that song lyrics are relevant to be utilized as learning materials in Indonesian language education within the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum, as they support contextual learning, literacy development, critical thinking skills, and students’ cultural awareness. Overall, Barthes’ semiotic approach proves effective in uncovering the symbolic and socio-cultural meanings of song lyrics.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of slang as a non-formal language variety in the dialogue of the film “Big Family”. The focus of the study includes the forms of slang, their functions, and the factors influencing their use. The method used was descriptive qualitative, using listening and note-taking techniques for film dialogue containing slang. The results showed nine types of slang, consisting of slang, abbreviations, and foreign language borrowings. Slang is the most dominant form used in the film's dialogue. The use of slang serves to create a relaxed and friendly communication atmosphere, express the speaker's emotions, mark the social identity of the group, and streamline speech. Factors influencing the use of slang include the informal communication situation, the age and social background of the characters, the influence of media and globalization, and the purpose of the communication. Thus, the dialogue in the film “Big Family” represents the use of slang that reflects the linguistic reality of modern society.
