Abstract

Abstract

The background of this research departs from the concern that the cultural identity of Indonesian children is increasingly eroded by globalization and technological developments. On the other hand, local wisdom in various regions has great potential to build children's character and cultural identity from an early age. This research aims to examine the role of revitalizing local wisdom in shaping early childhood cultural identity in Indonesia. The method used is a qualitative approach with case studies in several early childhood education institutions that have integrated local wisdom in their curriculum. The results of the study show that the introduction of local wisdom through culture-based learning significantly increases children's understanding and sense of pride in their culture. Through approaches based on folklore, art, and cultural rituals, children can develop a strong sense of identity, which contributes to the formation of their character. The conclusion of this study is that the revitalization of local wisdom in early childhood education is very important to build a solid cultural identity, as well as increase cultural awareness in the younger generation. Therefore, it is important for educational institutions to integrate local wisdom in the curriculum so that children can grow up with a good understanding of their culture.

Abstract

Emotional intelligence (EI) plays a critical role in early childhood development, influencing social and academic skills. As young children begin to navigate complex social interactions and engage in learning activities, the ability to recognize, understand, and regulate emotions becomes fundamental to their success in school and relationships. Despite its importance, the role of EI in shaping early childhood social and academic outcomes remains underexplored. This study aims to examine the impact of emotional intelligence on the development of social and academic skills in early childhood. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving a sample of 150 preschool children and their teachers. The study utilized the Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i) for children and teacher reports on social and academic skills. The results demonstrated that higher emotional intelligence scores were significantly associated with better social interactions, peer relationships, and academic performance, particularly in areas of problem-solving and self-regulation. The findings suggest that fostering emotional intelligence in early childhood education programs can enhance both social and academic competencies. The study concludes that EI is a key factor in supporting children’s overall development, providing a foundation for improved social interactions and academic achievement in later years.

Abstract

Abstract

This study look into the revival of Palang Pintu tradition as a key cultural practice in Betawi Society, emphasizing on its role in maintaining local heritage and cultural identity in the face of modernizing problems. Palang Pintu, which is a traditional part of Betawi weddings, uses poetry, martial arts (Silat), and religious expression to represent hospitality, strength, and bargaining. However, the rapid growth of Jakarta's metropolitan culture has slowly pushed this practice to the edges, making people worry about how long it will last and how important it is in today's world. Qualitative research was used in this study. Ethnographic observation, interviews with cultural leaders, the arts, linguists, and Betawi society were all used in this study. The findings show that three interrelated strategies have been used to carry out revitalization: boosting cultural education in schools and community-based organizations; integrating Palang Pintu into the tourism and creative industries; and utilizing digital platforms to increase public exposure and facilitate intergenerational transmission. In addition to preserving Betawi cultural identity, these initiatives promote intercultural interaction and aid in the development of more inclusive cultural policies in Indonesia. This study confirms that Palang Pintu serves as a cultural symbol that strengthens social solidarity and collective memory among the Betawi people, going beyond a ritualistic display. The resurgence of this custom in contemporary times illustrates the resilience of local heritage amidst globalization, providing valuable insights for sustainable cultural preservation. To enhance scholarly debate on protecting intangible cultural assets in heterogeneous cultures, future study is advised to investigate revitalization approaches among various ethnic communities.

Abstract

The introduction of local culture in Early Childhood Education (ECE) is regarded as a strategic approach to fostering character development from an early age. This article outlines both theoretical foundations and recent empirical evidence regarding the role of local cultural elements such as indigenous values, regional languages, folktales, rituals, and community practices in shaping children’s core character traits, including religiosity, honesty, responsibility, discipline, empathy, cooperation, and patriotism. Through a narrative literature review and thematic synthesis of more than 40 scholarly sources, this study develops the “4L-CARE” conceptual model (Language, Lore, Local Practices, Landscape → Character, Agency, Relatedness, Empathy) that explains the linkage between local cultural experiences and character competencies in children aged 4–6 years. Furthermore, the article proposes practical strategies for implementing the Merdeka Curriculum within culturally contextual PAUD settings, including storytelling-based (masatua/folklore) activities, character assessment rubrics, and models of collaboration among teachers, parents, and local communities. The findings emphasize that authentic, repetitive, and meaningful integration of local culture supported by a safe and inclusive local language environment enhances the internalization of character values through play, storytelling, and community-based projects.
