Abstract

Communicative skill is important to be mastered by primary teacher candidates. The skill is required to create conducive teaching and learning process. Meanwhile, the fact shows that the students of primary school teacher (PGSD) at STKIP Muhammadiyah Enrekang have low communicative skill. Involving technology in learning is considered to be able to assist the teacher to hone the students’ communicative skill. Vlog or video blog which is technology-based can be a way to overcome the issue. The present study aims at investigating whether the use of vlog-based assignment can improve the students’ communicative skill and affect their self- confidence. Quantitative research method with quasi-experimental research design is used to complete this research. The instruments used to collect data are questionnaire and test which is arranged based on the communicative skill indicators and validated by an expert. In conclusion, the use of vlog-based assignment gives positive impact to the level of self-confidence of the students and thus enhance the students’ communicative skill as well.

Abstract

The status of English lessons in the 2013 curriculum is an alternative extracurricular program. This means that schools are given a policy to choose to teach English as extracurricular program or not. Especially for Enrekang District, Enrekang Regency,many elementary schools chose not to program it. Meanwhile, from a geographical perspective, Enrekang Regency is directly adjacent to Tana Toraja Regency which is an international tourism area. Thus, human resources around the area should be equipped with English skills. The aims of this research are: 1) to analyze the need for English as an extracurricular program in elementary schools in Enrekang Regency in terms of geographical aspects. 2) to identify the learning approach to teach English that is in accordance with elementary school students need in Enrekang Regency in terms of geographical aspects. This study quantitative and qualitative (Mix-Method). The subjects of this study were SDN 41 Enrekang which was determined through purposive sampling technique. Data collection techniques that had been carried out are through questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The result confirms that English is really needs to be programmed as an extracurricular activity in elementary schools. In addition, both behaviorism and cognitive learning approach can be applied in teaching English in this context. The methods and techniques that can be applied should be consistent with that learning approach and match with the students’ actual English needs in a geographical perspective.

Abstract

Pemerintah melalui Kementerian Pendidikan, Kebudayaan, Riset dan Teknologi Republik Indonesia telah meluncurkan Program MB-KM untuk perguruan tinggi yang terdiri atas 8 skema. Beberapa diantara skema tersebut telah dilakasanakan dan terus berproses di Universitas Muhammadiyah Enrekang. Khusus untuk skema Membangun Desa dan Kewirausahaan, UNIMEN telah mengimplentasikan ke dalam program EKKN tematik yang telah berlansung selama 2 periode. Namun belum pernah diadakan sebuah penelitian untuk mengetahui sejauh mana implementasi kegiatan tersebut berdampak baik bagi mahasiswa, dosen, ataupun perguruan tinggi itu sendiri. Hal inilah yang melatarbelakangi diadakannya penelitian ini. Adapun luaran kegiatan ini diharapkan mampu menghasilkan artikel ilmiah yang dipublikasikan dalam jurnal nasional bereputasi. Hasil peneltian ini pun diharapkan dapat bermanfaat bagi masyarakat baik di bidang pendidikan, social, dan ekonomi.

Abstract

The research aimed to analyze the factors that affected the English language proficiency of students in non-English Education programs at Universitas Muhammadiyah Enrekang. This research was a descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The participants in the research were students from programs outside the English Education program. The data collection method used was a questionnaire. The stages in data analysis included data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the research revealed that the factors affecting the students' English language proficiency were: Listening ability, which was influenced by a lack of vocabulary and concentration, Reading ability, which was influenced by low reading motivation and vocabulary, Speaking ability, which was influenced by a lack of confidence and vocabulary, and Writing ability, which was influenced by low interest and a lack of support from the surrounding environment. This research indicated that the students still faced various challenges in their English language skills, including listening, reading, speaking, and writing, and that additional support outside the classroom was needed to improve their language abilities
