Abstract

An essential element relevant to forest sustainability is the state of health of the stand. Health conditions of trees can be affected by both biotic and abiotic elements. This study aims to identify tree damage in the protected blocks of the Bunder Forest Park (Tahura) in Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, using three parameters: damage location, damage type, and severity level. Observations were carried out in three clusters using the Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) method in protection block. The results showed that 16 trees were categorized as healthy, 41 threes experieced minor damage, and 10 threes had moderate damage. The most frequent damage location on individual trees was found on the lower trunk. The most commonly observed type of damage was open wounds. The most frequent severity level was 20%, which indicates a low level of damage. Nevertheless, it is necessary to conduct monitoring of tree health in order to facilitate the sustainable management of the Tahura Bunder forest reserve.

Abstract

The low durability class wood usage makes it susceptible to attack by wood-destroying organisms, so preservation is necessary to extend its service life. The present study aimed to determine the effect of teak wood extract concentration, soaking duration, and their interactions on pine wood durability. The preservative used in the present study was teak sawdust waste extract with concentrations of 50 g/L, 100 g/L, and 150 g/L. The cold soaking of teak wood extracts was conducted for 72, 120, and 168 hours. A graveyard test was used to evaluate the durability of wood treated with preservatives. The average absorption of teak extract was 442.4 kg/m3, with the highest absorption obtained in the treatment of 50 g/L teak extract concentration and 168 hours soaking duration (497.3 ± 43.8 kg/m3). Meanwhile, the lowest absorption was obtained in the treatment of 50 g/L teak extract and 72 hours soaking duration (362.8 ± 61.1 kg/m3). The average retention of teak extract was 3.3 kg/m3, with the highest retention in the treatment of teak extract concentration of 150 g/L and 72 hours soaking duration (4.8 ± 1.7 kg/m3) and the lowest in the treatment of teak extract concentration of 150 g/L and 168 hours soaking duration, (1.8 ± 1.2 kg/m3). The results in the present study indicated that the application of teak extract concentration and soaking duration did not significantly affect the absorption and retention of preservatives. The penetration depth of the teak extract was shallow, so changes in the color of the wood in the test sample were only visible on the surface. The highest weight loss was found in the test sample with a teak extract concentration of 150 g/L with 72 hours soaking duration, namely 30.4%. In addition, the lowest weight loss was 2.1% found in the teak extract concentration of 100 g/L with 72 hours soaking duration. There was no interaction between the concentration of teak extract and the difference in soaking duration on wood durability in the graveyard test method. There is a need for diversity in the preservation method given to see if there is an increase in preservatives' absorption, retention, and penetration.

Abstract

Forest Farmer Group (KTH) is a platform which facilitates the establishment of enterprises by communities residing near forests. The KTH Harapan Makmur, situated in Gempolan Village, Karanganyar Regency, Central Java, has the capacity to harness both human resources and natural resources. Nevertheless, when it comes to organizational development, it lies short of being ideal. Therefore, it is imperative to offer support linked to enhancing institutional capacity. The objective of this action is to enhance community awareness of growing organizations. A community service event took place in July 2023, attended by representatives from the Gempolan Village Government, forestry extension workers, a community service team from Universitas Sebelas Maret, and members of the KTH Harapan Makmur. The activity was implemented through the organization of a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) primarily aimed at facilitating the compilation of the AD/ART. Attending participants were requested to complete a questionnaire. The activity findings indicate that roughly 40.9% of KTH Harapan Makmur members are employed as farmers, earning a monthly income ranging from less than 1 million rupiah to 3 million rupiah. Following the session, participants' understanding of KTH exhibited a percentage gain in comparison to their level of knowledge before the activity. Thus far, the primary obstacle has been the procurement of capital sources, which remain restricted. Engagement in diverse activities is expected to create possibilities for collaboration and capital acquisition to ensure the long-term viability of KTH's business.

Abstract

Tlogowatu Village, Kemalang District, Klaten Regency, is located on the slopes of Merapi Mountain. Currently, sand and stone mining from Merapi Mountain is the primary commodity produced by Tlogowatu Village. If this condition continues, it will cause the damage to the environment. Therefore, several community leaders have cultivated the stingless bee (Trigona laeviceps) as an economic source while adhering to ecological principles through stingless bee farming in community forests. However, community forest and stingless beekeeping need to be appropriately managed, especially in terms of management, production, and marketing aspects. Activities are carried out in several stages, namely starting with pre-activity surveys, counselling and practical development of management, production and marketing aspects, as well as monitoring and evaluation of activities. This activity has increased the knowledge of target partners regarding the livestock of Clanceng in community forests in the form of another type of Clanceng, namely T. biroi, various feed sources, techniques for breaking up split rapid colonies, and good honey packaging. Apart from that, through klanceng livestock in community forests, local communities also gain ecological benefits and build potential for developing agricultural education tourism (edu-agro-tourism) areas.

Abstract

Indonesia is known as a living laboratory because its forests host approximately 30,000 plant species, of which around 9,600 are medicinal. The benefits of natural medicines derived from plants have been empirically proven, encouraging communities to preserve them. The use of medicinal plants by communities reflects the relationship between humans and plants, known as ethnobotany. This relationship can show how the community of Pucung Village uses medicinal plants, the efforts and conservation status of the medicinal plant species found, and the community's perceptions of medicinal plants and the sustainability of local knowledge about their use for future generations. Using an ethnobotanical approach, this study focuses on local wisdom as the foundation for preserving knowledge of medicinal plants in Pucung Village. The data collection methods used were purposive sampling and snowball sampling. Using these techniques, 18 informants were identified. Based on the interview results, 56 plant types from 30 families were identified, with turmeric (100%) being the most frequently used. The plant part with the highest percentage was leaves (45.16%). The most dominant processing method was boiling (37.70%). The primary source of plant acquisition was cultivation activities (49.30%). The most common plant habit was herbaceous (37%). There are 24 medicinal plant species classified as least concern, 9 as data deficient, and 23 as not evaluated. Efforts to sustain local knowledge include direct practice and the transmission of knowledge through oral communication. Nine informants tend to use medicinal plants to maintain physical health, while nine others tend to prefer using medicinal plants first.
