Abstract

The widespread use of jamu, a traditional Indonesian herbal medicine, has been accompanied by a surge in adulteration with synthetic drugs to enhance efficacy and sales. This study aimed to detect the presence of glibenclamide, a common adulterant, in antidiabetic jamu product using TLC. This study employed three herbal medicine samples marketed for lowering blood glucose levels, with glibenclamide BPFI serving as a reference standard. Thin-layer chromatography, employing a mobile phase consisting of chloroform, cyclohexane, ethanol, and glacial acetic acid (9:9:1:1), was utilized for the analysis. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) analysis revealed a standard Rf value of 0.4 for glibenclamide, producing a distinct blue-violet spot when visualized with 10% sulfuric acid. The results indicated that the tested herbal medicine samples did not contain the pharmaceutical substance glibenclamide. This conclusion was drawn from the absence of a corresponding Rf value for glibenclamide in the herbal samples when compared to the reference standard.

Abstract

Hypertension occurs when a person's blood pressure exceeds the normal limits. This results in increased morbidity and mortality. The method in this study is descriptive, with the use of retrospective research, where the study was conducted by reviewing information or retrieving data that had existed before. Data were collected through polypharmacy prescriptions for patients with high blood pressure at the Royal Prima Medan Hospital between September and November 2023, with 650 prescriptions collected. From the results of this study, the prescriptions that met the inclusion criteria were 100% in accordance with the symptoms, drug doses, mechanisms, procedures, and duration of drug use. A total of 26 prescriptions contained five drugs with 63.41% interaction out of a total of 41 prescriptions. A total of 34 prescriptions contained 6 drugs, with 65.11% of the total 49 prescriptions. A total of 19 prescriptions contained seven drugs, with 82.61% of the total 23 prescriptions. A total of 13 prescriptions containing 8 drugs with a percentage of interactions of 86.67% of the total 15 prescriptions. Most interactions occurred in six prescriptions containing nine drugs, with 100% interaction from a total of six drugs. Most interactions also occurred in four prescriptions containing 10 drugs, with 100% interaction from a total of four drugs.

Abstract

High blood sugar levels can be influenced by several factors, including high-carbohydrate food consumption and a lack of physical activity. To minimize the side effects of hyperglycemic treatment, efforts have been made to explore anti-hyperglycemic compounds from other sources, such as durian peel (Durio zibetthinus Murr.). This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of ethanol extract from durian peel in lowering alloxan-induced blood sugar levels in Wistar rats (Rattus novergicus). The study is an experimental research employing an alloxan-induced diabetic rat model. The rats were divided into five different groups: Group I (negative control), Group II (positive control), Group III (dose 25 × 10–30/gBW), Group IV (dose 50 × 10–30/gBW), and Group V (dose 100 × 10–30/gBW). The durian peel used in this study was extracted using the maceration method with ethanol as the solvent. The results of this study indicate that ethanol extract from durian peel significantly reduced blood sugar levels after 10 to 15 days of durian peel extract administration (p < 0.05).

Abstract

Obesity is a global, non-communicable condition that causes male infertility. Obesity impacts spermatogenesis and male fertility. Butterfly pea blossoms (Clitoria ternatea) contain antioxidants that fight free radicals and prevent obesity. This research looked at how butterfly pea flower extract (Clitoria ternatea) affected cholesterol levels, testicular function, and the histopathology of the testicles of obese male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). This research is quantitative and uses a lab or actual experiment. The 24 test mice were randomly divided into four groups. The research data was analyzed using SPSS 25.0 for Windows. The normality test significance is 0.577. One-way ANOVA test results demonstrate 0.000 or greater than 0.05 significance. LSD post-hoc test values. The control and treatment groups 1–3 differed significantly (p = 0.000). No change was seen between treatment groups 2 and 3 (p = 0.088). The research found butterfly pea flower extract therapy (Clitoria ternatea) at 400mg and 600 mg/kgBW lowers cholesterol. Flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and triterpenoids reduce cholesterol and improve testicular function in obese white rats.

Abstract

Abstract
