Abstract

A sincere invitation is a speech act with a significant role in interpersonal communication, and the purpose of this study is to explore the speech acts commonly used by Yemeni speakers to convey sincere invitations in their daily interactions. The qualitative research approach focuses on the linguistic and social contexts in which sincere invitations are made. Data is collected through personal observation and online interviews, which simulate brief, everyday social conversations. The study includes a purposive sample of native Arabic-speaking Yemeni individuals residing in the provinces of north Yemen. The data analysis is based on Searle's speech act theory, which is used to evaluate a speaker's adherence to Felicity Requirements as an indicator of the authenticity of their invitations. The findings indicate that Yemeni speakers use declarative and interrogative sentences to convey indirect illocutionary acts of genuine invitations. Furthermore, the genuineness of these invitations is established through the observance of felicity conditions proposed by Searle.

Abstract

Despite the strong emphasis that Non-Native English-speaking teachers place on English language proficiency, this study reveals that English language teachers graduating from public universities in an Arab country often lack essential communication skills due to gaps in their training. Using a Critical Discourse Analysis approach, this research draws on data from two sources to critically examine the inadequate English proficiency among student-teachers through an ideological lens. The findings highlight how differing ideological influences shaped various factors affecting the STs’ language competence. After all, these ideological forces have significant implications for the development of STs’ linguistic abilities.

Abstract

Meaning is the core unit of language. It may convey positive and negative implications. Swearing is an intriguing language-related topic. Hence, this work is carried out to discover and describe the form, reference, meaning, and purpose of swearing in Yemeni Arabic as practiced by the people in mountainous regions of western Yemen. People express their feelings through the use of utterances that are referred to as swearing. These utterances typically have a negative connotation. This qualitative research presents the spoken language utilized by the respondents residing within the sub-districts of the Mahweet and Hajjah provinces in western Yemen. The data processing consisted of three stages: choosing, transcribing, and evaluating relevant data. The form, reference, and function of swearing were all interpreted to conduct the analysis. There were many other ways to swear, including monomorpheme, polymorpheme, phrase, clause, and sentence forms. Those swearing forms are referred to animals, religious terms, supernatural creatures, members of the family, portions of the body, human activities, professions, oaths, illnesses, and exclamations. Connotatively and denotatively, the swearing allowed for rage, displeasure, surprise, insult, and even humor. The study's implications were also studied. As a result, researchers may undertake more thorough investigations to better understand urban or coastal Yemeni swearing. The sociolinguistic, discursive, and pragmatic aspects of swearing should be researched more in the future.

Abstract

Background: Prabowo Subianto's 2025 First State Address, a speech that has not been previously examined in academic literature. This study seeks to identify and analyse the linguistic and rhetorical strategies utilized in Prabowo’s speech to unmask his political legitimacy, presidential identity, ideological stance within the Indonesian context. Methodology: Using Teun A. van Dijk’s socio-cognitive model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the study analyzed both the transcript and video recording. Data were coded across macro, super, and micro levels to uncover thematic organization, argumentation patterns, and linguistic devices. Qualitative coding and multimodal cue analysis were employed by identifying recurring linguistic patterns (e.g., pronouns, metaphors, repetition) and correlating them with non-verbal features such as gestures, facial expressions and tone, to interpret how verbal and visual elements jointly construct ideological meaning. Findings: The analysis reveals that Prabowo frames his leadership as a moral and protective force against corrupt elites and economic exploitation. Nationalist appeals such as food self-sufficiency, poverty reduction, and empowerment of the wong cilik reinforce a paternalistic model of governance portraying the state as the guardian of the people. Toward the conclusion, he emphasizes democratic transition, international cooperation, and Indonesia’s global standing, invoking pride and collective dignity. Microstructural analysis of pronoun use, presuppositions, and metaphors demonstrates how rhetorical strategies align with broader ideological positioning. Conclusion: Prabowo’s first state speech address gives some theoretical contributions as the role of historical narratives in constructing collective cognition and sustaining political legitimacy. Originality: The originality of this research lies in its integrated application of van Dijk’s socio-cognitive framework to Prabowo Subianto’s 2025 State of the Nation Address which hasn’t been analyzed before, it combines textual and multimodal analysis to show how linguistic structures, visual cues, and rhetorical strategies work together to create political legitimacy and national identity.

Abstract

Language barriers play a crucial role in shaping international students’ academic success and social adjustment. However, limited research has examined how these barriers are experienced in the Indonesian context. This study examines the forms and contributing factors of language barriers experienced by 11 Thai international students in Indonesia as part of their academic adjustment. Combination of in-depth interviews and focus group discussions were used in the data collection procedure. The findings reveal that the students encountered difficulties in listening comprehension, speaking anxiety, grammar mastery, and reading academic texts. Contributing factors included fear of peer judgment, limited vocabulary, accent variation, and lack of familiarity with the topics. The study concludes that language barriers are not limited to lingustic aspects but also involve psychological and social dimensions. It highlights the urgency for Indonesian higher institutions to implement tailored language support, inclusive pedagogy, and academic services to foster international students’ effective adjusment.
