Abstract

A sincere invitation is a speech act with a significant role in interpersonal communication, and the purpose of this study is to explore the speech acts commonly used by Yemeni speakers to convey sincere invitations in their daily interactions. The qualitative research approach focuses on the linguistic and social contexts in which sincere invitations are made. Data is collected through personal observation and online interviews, which simulate brief, everyday social conversations. The study includes a purposive sample of native Arabic-speaking Yemeni individuals residing in the provinces of north Yemen. The data analysis is based on Searle's speech act theory, which is used to evaluate a speaker's adherence to Felicity Requirements as an indicator of the authenticity of their invitations. The findings indicate that Yemeni speakers use declarative and interrogative sentences to convey indirect illocutionary acts of genuine invitations. Furthermore, the genuineness of these invitations is established through the observance of felicity conditions proposed by Searle.

Abstract

The novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns” is written by Khalid Hosseini, an Afghan American writer, about the lives of Afghans in Afghanistan. Considering the novel as a social semiotic, this paper intends to analyze the politeness strategies used by the two main characters: Mariam, the female protagonist, and Rasheed the male antagonist to conclude whether the female character is more polite or the male character. This paper is qualitative research, and it uses the theoretical framework of Penelope Brown and Stephen Levinson. The result of the paper indicates that both the characters used bald on record dominantly followed by positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record; also, the result indicates that women are more polite than men in the novel. It is because the female character used more off record and negative politeness than the male character. This paper adds to our knowledge of how the female and male characters are portrayed in the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, and it also suggests that future researchers conduct ethnographic research to conclude about the politeness of the male and female in Afghan Society itself.

Abstract

"Ditioeng Memeh Hoedjan" is an ancient literary fable that was created and written by Pangeran Aria Soeria Atmajda, who was also the 20th Regent of Sumedang (1883-1919). This fable contains character values that portray virtuous behaviours that every individual should possess. This study aims to describe and analyze the character values contained in the fable "Ditioeng Memeh Hoedjan" using Sundanese ethno-pedagogical perspectives. The analysis of this fable will be further transformed into a Lesson Plan (RPP) for teaching Civics Education to elementary school students. The research method employed in this study is qualitative descriptive. The data for this research were obtained from the manuscript of the "Ditioeng Memeh Hoedjan" fable, which is housed in the Geusan Ulun Museum in Sumedang. The research findings indicate that out of the ten pages in this fable, ten paragraphs contain character values. Based on the classification, four paragraphs discuss religious values, 1 paragraph discusses integrity values, three paragraphs discuss tolerance values, and two paragraphs discuss creative values. The analysis of these values demonstrates positive behaviours that we can emulate to become knowledgeable individuals, far from being arrogant or conceited. These values can mainly be applied to elementary school students in Civics Education, which upholds the values of Pancasila, such as being obedient to religion, exhibiting friendly behaviour, acquiring knowledge, and avoiding harmful behaviours.

Abstract

Background: Instagram captions play an important role in digital communication and can be used as an innovative tool in writing instruction. By encouraging creativity and clarity, captions help students practice meaningful writing through a familiar platform. This study aims to examine the implementation of Instagram captions in teaching descriptive texts and assess their impact on students' writing skills and motivation.Methodology:This research employed classroom action research (CAR) design, conducted in two cycles, each consisting of five meetings, with the aim of improving tenth-grade students' descriptive writing skills using Instagram as a teaching media. In the planning phase, lesson plans were developed incorporating Instagram post caption activities. During the implementation phase, students were engaged in writing descriptive texts by creating captions for photos on Instagram. Observations were made throughout the teaching process, with field notes documenting the students' participation and enthusiasm. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test assessments to measure students' writing skills, and qualitative data from observations were analyzed to assess classroom dynamics. Findings:The findings of this research indicate a significant improvement in students' descriptive writing skills after the implementation of Instagram post captions as a teaching media. In the pre-test, the mean score was 75.94, with only 50% of students meeting the minimum achievement criteria (KKM). However, after the intervention, the post-test mean score increased to 80.16, with 100% of students achieving the KKM. This demonstrates a 55.57% improvement in students' writing abilities. Additionally, observations during the lessons revealed that students were more engaged and enthusiastic throughout the process, suggesting that Instagram captions effectively captured their interest and contributed to a more active and interactive classroom environment. Conclusion:In conclusion, the use of Instagram post captions as a teaching media has proven to be an effective strategy for improving students' descriptive writing skills in the tenth grade at SMAN 3 Kuningan. The research demonstrated a significant improvement in students' writing performance, with all students meeting the minimum achievement criteria by the end of the study. The integration of Instagram into the learning process not only enhanced students' writing skills but also increased their engagement and enthusiasm during lessons. Therefore, Instagram post captioning can be considered a valuable and innovative tool for teaching writing, particularly in descriptive text, and can be applied in similar educational settings to foster student creativity and motivation in writing.Originality:This study offers an original approach by utilizing Instagram post captions to improve students' descriptive writing skills, integrating social media as an effective tool in enhancing language learning outcomes.
