Abstract

This study aims to identify the form of the use of dissipation as a marker of inter-propositional relations in junior high school students' essays. This study was designed using a qualitative research approach. 94 grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Balikpapan were involved as research subjects in this study. The data in this study were collected using the 'seeing method' after the research subjects were given essay writing assignments to obtain documented data sources. Analysis of the research data consisted of three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that there are three types of omissions that are used as a means of linking one proposition to another in the research subject's essay, namely noun omission, verb omission, and propositional omission. Among the three categories, noun escape is more dominantly used by research subjects as a marker of relations between propositions than verb escape and proposition escape. This study also shows that research subjects tend to use structural and situational forms of disengagement rather than textual deletion, so that the relationship between propositions becomes disrupted. The findings of this study make an important contribution for language teachers to optimize learning and training in writing skills in classrooms.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how students with mental retardation acquire language, and to find out the efforts of English teachers through multicultural-based education in supporting the language acquisition of students with mental retardation. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study involved 10 students with mental retardation and one English teacher at a special school (SLB) in Maros Regency. Data was collected through observation and interviews to explore learning practices and teacher interactions with students. The data analysis technique is thematic analysis, which allows researchers to identify the main patterns and themes from the data obtained. Research findings indicate five stages of language acquisition by students with mental retardation: preproduction, early production, speech emergency, intermediate fluency, and advanced fluency. In addition, it was found that English teachers make five main efforts in multicultural learning: content integration, knowledge construction, equity pedagogy, prejudice reduction, and empowering school with culture and social structure. This research provides a new perspective by emphasizing the importance of integrating multicultural values into language teaching strategies that are adaptive to students' special needs. The implications of this research suggest that inclusive and multicultural language education has the potential to improve the language skills of children with special needs and create a more equitable and empowering learning environment.

Abstract

General Background: Reading interest and reading literacy are essential competencies in elementary Indonesian language learning because they support students’ comprehension, communication, and lifelong learning. Specific Background: Fourth grade students still face difficulties in understanding folklore texts due to limited contextual, visually attractive, and student-centered teaching resources. Knowledge Gap: Previous studies have developed folklore-based resources, yet systematic development that integrates local cultural content, expert validation, practicality testing, and field-based literacy measurement remains limited. Aims: This study developed Indonesian language teaching materials on folklore to support fourth grade students’ reading interest and reading literacy. Results: The developed printed folklore materials were categorized as very valid, with media expert validation reaching 96% and material expert validation reaching 98%. Practicality testing showed very high results through learning implementation and teacher responses with a score of 97, while student responses reached 89%. Student reading literacy increased from a pretest mean of 70.71 to a posttest mean of 80.29, and reading interest increased from 57.29 to 89.76. Novelty: The study presents locally grounded folklore teaching materials supported by illustrations, reading guidance, vocabulary support, and literacy exercises designed for elementary learners. Implications: These findings indicate that folklore-based teaching materials can serve as a contextual learning alternative for strengthening reading engagement, literacy achievement, and cultural understanding in elementary Indonesian language learning. Highlights • Expert appraisal placed the developed resource in the very valid category.• Teacher and student responses showed strong practicality in classroom use.• Posttest scores showed higher learner engagement and comprehension outcomes.
