Abstract

Dusun Dlingseng is located in Banjaroyo Village, Kalibawang District, Kulon Progo Regency, which is the location of regular and international KKN in February and March 2019, where the majority of villagers rely on their main livelihood as farmers and ranchers. In addition to these two sources of livelihood, Dusun Dlingseng is also where the Banjaroyo Embung operates or often known as a mini reservoir. Where apart from being a place of recreation, this Embung and its surroundings are a place for the Dlingseng community to sell their garden produce. Agricultural products produced in Dlingseng Hamlet such as cassava, coffee, corn, cassava, coffee, rambutan, coconut, durian and others are grown on the farmers' respective lands. Usually they process cassava into "slondok" a typical Kulon Progo snack. They sell their products in the nearest market or at collectors who come at a low price. This community service is needed by the village with a program that supports the progress of the Dlingseng hamlet in processing existing natural resources and a program to train them to promote their production and sell them other than in the market in order to get more profit.

Abstract

Food garden activities based on religious values are a special form of community development in environmental management. This activity is considered quite effective because the awareness or education is carried out by religious/community leaders who are trusted and respected by the community. Mass mobilization activities are also easier because the activities are carried out in the pesantren environment where they meet at any time to carry out worship and education at the Islamic boarding school. Partners for community service, namely the Al Bayan Islamic Boarding School in Tobayan Hamlet, Sendangrejo Minggir, Sleman, DIY. The partners' problems are as follows: low public awareness and knowledge of the importance of managing a clean and productive Islamic boarding school environment, land has not been utilized as a source of cheap healthy (vegetable and animal) food for students. Based on these problems, this community service aims to help manage the environment of Islamic boarding schools and provide healthy food through an eco-Islamic boarding school based food garden. Through assistance in the management of eco-Islamic boarding schools based food gardens, the planned solutions are: First, the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) aims to identify in more detail related to environmental management through eco-Islamic boarding schools based food gardens and the needs of partners. Second, Counseling and recitation of eco-Islamic boarding school-based food gardens is carried out to increase awareness and knowledge in environmental management through eco-Islamic boarding school-based food gardens. Third, training on organic fertilizers and cultivating vegetables and ornamental plants to provide healthy food.

Abstract

Mount Merapi, one of Indonesia’s most active and dangerous volcanoes, experienced a devastating eruption in 2010, causing numerous fatalities and widespread damage to homes and land, especially in areas vulnerable to the volcano’s activity. Despite the inherent risks, many farmers continue to cultivate the region’s land. This study examines the resilience of farmers in the Mount Merapi area in light of the persistent volcanic activity. Employing a qualitative methodology, including in-depth interviews and field observations, the research reveals that farmers’ resilience is shaped by their individual experiences and the contributions of government, private sector, and community actors. Long-term residence in the area has equipped farmers with the knowledge and confidence required to navigate the risks and hazards associated with the volcano. Farmers prioritize their safety but also focus on safeguarding their livestock and other essential resources, which are integral to their livelihoods. The local community is instrumental in supporting farmers and residents in disaster-prone zones, while external organizations offer additional advantages to farmers’ lives. The study proposes that a collaborative effort among all stakeholders is essential for maintaining farmers’ livelihoods in areas susceptible to volcanic activity.

Abstract

Forest and peatland fires in Indonesia affect the lives of farmers near the prone areas, and their food security is impacted. This research aimed to examine the level of food security and identify the factors influencing it in the forest and peatland fires of South Kalimantan. One hundred farmers, considered vulnerable to peatland fires, from two subdistricts, namely Gambut District and Sungai Tabuk District, were interviewed. The study employed the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) method, consisting of nine food conditions questions and logistic regression analysis. This study shows that the majority of farmers experience mild food insecurity. Land status, family size, fire rate, and land size affected the farmers’ food security. Disaster mitigation education may help reduce the impact of forest and peatland fires on farmers’ food security. Additionally, support from various stakeholders will strengthen food security efforts. Abstract

Mount Merapi, located in Indonesia, is an active volcano that poses a significant threat to the surrounding communities. Vegetables, including chili, are grown in the disaster-prone areas surrounding Mount Merapi, despite the risks associated with the active volcano. Based on the prevailing wind patterns in the region, the disaster-prone areas surrounding Mount Merapi have been classified into four distinct zones, namely Zones I, II, III, and IV, each characterized by distinct agroecosystems, feasibility, and risk levels. Therefore, this study aimed to describe agroecosystems, costs, income, feasibility, and risks of chili farming in in the four zones surrounding Mount Merapi. The samples of this study consist of 163 farmers from the four disaster-prone zones surrounding Mount Merapi, selected through purposive sampling. The RC ratio was employed as part of the feasibility analysis, and the production and income risks were analyzed. The results showed that chili farming in Zone IV (the area farthest from the disaster center) possessed the lowest cost, revenue, and income. On the contrary, Zone III generated the highest cost and revenue, while Zone I (the area with the highest vulnerability to disasters) had the highest income. The range of R/C values ranges from 2.40 in Zone I to 1.16 in Zone IV. Considering the results, chili farming was feasible in disaster-prone areas, where the production risk was lower than the income risk. Therefore, Zone I, the area with extremely high disaster risk, had the lowest production and income risk. This study highlighted that chili farming provides benefits to the vulnerable farmers and new perspective for agricultural sustainability in the area of Mount Merapi.
