Abstract

Researching the speech acts performed between Arabic and English speakers is one of the popular trends in pragmatic research. However, the majority of previous studies have only obtained data from native Arabic and English speakers, or Arabic natives who are learning English as a foreign language. This study intends to fill the research gap of comparing the speech acts of giving praise and responding to praise made by students who are studying both English and Arabic as their foreign languages. This descriptive study used two instruments, namely a discourse completion task questionnaire consisting of twelve scenarios and an interview, involving 70 English learners and 70 Arabic learners from UIN Alauddin Makassar which is the only university in Indonesia that offers the unique Foreign Language Intensification Development (PIBA) program. Results have determined that the dominant praise strategies of Arabic learners are awe and congratulating, while English learners tend to use surprise and congratulating strategies. Both language learners dominantly use the strategies of giving appreciation and reassigning praises as their praise response strategies. This study concluded that Arabic foreign language learners tend to have a small repertoire of praise and praise response strategies, while English foreign language learners’ arsenal of strategies is much more diverse.

Effective technology integration is believed to be able to increase student motivation in learning while also helping teachers' work become easier. This research aims to determine pre-service teachers' perspectives on how technology is used to increase student motivation in learning English in elementary school students. This research focuses on learning applications used by pre-service teachers. Qualitative descriptive methods were used as the design of this research. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews involving two EFL students participating in a campus teaching program. The findings show that pre-service teachers use the Duolingo and Quizizz applications in teaching English. Integrating technology in the form of learning applications gets positive results where students are motivated to learn English because students seem more active and comfortable learning with the learning while playing system. Abstract

This study explores the language attitudes of the Tolaki people in Kendari City, Southeast Sulawesi, focusing on their perceptions of the Tolaki language in comparison to immigrant or dominant languages such as Indonesian. As a sociolinguistic investigation, the research examines how language pride, loyalty, and awareness influence language maintenance or contribute to language shift. The study targets all native speakers of the Tolaki language residing in Kendari, a city administratively divided into 10 sub-districts. A multi-stage sampling technique was adopted to ensure a representative sample. Stratified sampling was employed to select participants based on demographic factors such as age, gender, education, and occupation. In the first stage, six sub-districts—Abeli, Kendari, Poasia, Puwatu, Kambu, and Wua-wua—were chosen due to their high concentration of Tolaki speakers. A total of 322 respondents participated in the study. Data were collected using structured questionnaires to measure language attitudes, semi-structured interviews to explore deeper personal and cultural insights, and direct observation to assess actual language use in daily contexts. The quantitative data were processed using SPSS, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The findings revealed that language attitudes among Tolaki speakers—especially concerning pride in using the language, loyalty to its use, and awareness of its norms—were generally low. This decline in positive language attitudes, particularly among younger generations, has contributed to a noticeable language shift. The Tolaki language is increasingly marginalized in daily communication, indicating a weakening intergenerational transmission and a growing dominance of Indonesian in informal and public domains.
