Abstract

This research aimed to find out the types of sentence structure errors in English paragraphs written by tertiary English students and the factors causing the errors. This research employed an explanatory mixed-method design. Fourth-semester students from the English department of IAIN Curup were engaged as the subjects of this research. Positivism-governed document analyses and constructivism-based interviews were conducted to solicit the data as desired. The quantitative findings garnered from document analyses endorsing a ready-to-use construct proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982), revealed that there were four types of sentence structure errors students made, namely omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Those types of errors were exhibited in a proximate composition which meant that the students had compatible difficulties in terms of the four types of errors. As uncovered from students' writing works, the four types of errors were found in the domains of words, phrases, and clauses. Subsequently, the qualitative findings, elicited from interviews, demonstrated that the factors of sentence structure errors extended to students' mother tongue interference, overgeneralization in the use of English rules and norms, and the lecturer's teaching material delivery and method. Anchored in the data gained, this research discussed the data from the perspective of interlanguage theory, wherein some reviews of SLA and EFL pedagogy-related theories were offered to help lower the factors causing English sentence structure errors in writing skills. Keywords:  Errors, Sentence Structure, English writing skill

Abstract

This research discusses language change as a result of the influence of social media. In an increasingly advanced digital era, social media has become one of the primary communication tools for individuals worldwide. This study utilizes descriptive and comparative analysis methods to explore the influence of social media on language change. Firstly, the research identifies grammar, syntax, and vocabulary changes due to social media usage. Then, the study compares the language used in traditional communication with that used in social media communication. The findings of this research indicate significant language changes due to the use of social media. There is an increase in the use of abbreviations, emoticons, and distinctive terms specific to social media that affect the way humans communicate in a digital context. Additionally, casual writing styles, non-formal language use, and the adaptation of foreign words have become characteristics of social media communication. These language changes can have both positive and negative impacts. On the positive side, social media has enabled faster and more efficient communication between individuals across the globe. Using a more casual and non-formal language can also strengthen social bonds among social media users. However, on the other hand, these language changes can also pose challenges to understanding and communication between different generations or in formal contexts.

Abstract

Purpose – The study explores the impact of AI-powered ChatBots on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' writing skills, self-efficacy, and self-regulation. Given the rapid integration of digital tools in education, particularly in language learning, the research aims to fill a gap in understanding how ChatBot technology can enhance writing abilities, address psychosocial factors, and support self-regulated learning among EFL students. Design/Methods/Approach – A sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach was employed, involving 40 EFL students from IAIN Curup. Participants were divided into a control group (traditional writing instruction) and an experimental group (ChatBot-assisted instruction). Quantitative data on writing proficiency, self-efficacy, and self-regulation were collected through pre- and post-tests, followed by qualitative insights gathered through semi-structured interviews with the experimental group. Statistical analysis, including paired t-tests and ANCOVA, was used to assess differences between groups. Findings – The results revealed that students using ChatBots showed significant improvements in writing proficiency (post-test scores increased from 55.84 to 88.92), self-efficacy (from 20.46 to 30.38), and self-regulation (from 14.51 to 19.65). Interviews highlighted increased confidence, motivation, and engagement among students, though concerns about over-reliance on ChatBots and the risk of plagiarism were noted. Originality/Value – This research offers new insights into the use of AI-powered ChatBots in enhancing EFL students' writing skills, self-efficacy, and self-regulation. It addresses gaps in the literature by focusing on the psychosocial factors influencing writing performance and the potential benefits and drawbacks of AI integration in education. Practical Implications – The findings suggest that educators can use ChatBots to improve writing instruction, fostering autonomy and providing immediate feedback. However, strategies must be developed to avoid over-reliance on AI tools, ensuring students maintain creativity and critical thinking.
