Abstract

Goats are a prominent commodity within the ruminant livestock sector, serving as the primary meat producer to meet national demands. To support the development and productivity of goat farming, it is crucial to establish suitable spatial and regional planning frameworks for breeders. North Lampung is one of the regencies in Lampung Province with significant potential for goat farming, supported by a diverse vegetation profile and abundant agricultural waste for feed. Agricultural production in North Lampung reaches 61,823 tons annually, with rice as the primary crop, while livestock production totals 1,847,319 tons per year. The region provides 64,915 hectares for food crops and 128,563 hectares for plantations, with a goat population of 82,849. This potential enables North Lampung Regency to become a prominent goat farming area. However, the regency lacks standardized spatial planning and mapping for goat farming areas. This study identifies and analyzes the potential for goat farming development in North Lampung Regency using two stages: (1) identifying and analyzing goat farming potential through Location Quotient (LQ) analysis to determine farming centers, and (2) creating a goat farming development map for North Lampung Regency using Corel Draw/GIS. The map will outline regions suitable for goat farming as a foundation for government policy in North Lampung. The results identify 11 sub-districts, out of the 23, that can serve as business centers for goat farming development in North Lampung Regency. This research serves as a reference for the Lampung Provincial Government and related stakeholders in future goat farming policy decisions in North Lampung Regency.

Abstract

Livestock areas are areas specifically designated for livestock activities or integrated as a component of farming. The Beef Cattle Livestock development program is faced with the problem of increasingly narrow business land due to increasing competition in land use which results in the land available for green animal feed becoming increasingly narrow. Lampung Province has an area of 33,575.41 Ha with hilly and mountainous topography making it suitable for livestock development, beef production of 21.18 million kg/year, and has large land potential for development. while the beef cattle population is 906,568 heads. With this potential, it is very possible for Lampung Province to become a region for developing beef cattle farming. However, the problem is that Lampung Province does not yet have mapping and standards for spatial planning or beef cattle farming areas. This research was carried out by identifying and analyzing the potential for beef cattle development in Lampung Province using 2 analyzes namely; Descriptive Analysis, and Location Quation (LQ) Analysis. LQ analysis is used to determine the areas of beef cattle livestock centers in districts/cities in Lampung Province. The results of the research show that there are 14 regencies/cities that can be used as business centers for the maintenance and development of beef cattle in Lampung Province. Of the 15 regencies/cities in Lampung Province, only Bandar Lampung City has an LQ value of less than 1. The results of this research can become a reference for the Lampung Provincial government, related agencies and other stakeholders in making policy decisions for developing beef cattle businesses in Lampung Province in the future.

Abstract

Abstract

Livestock development is a series of continuous activities to develop the capabilities of farming communities, especially livestock communities, so that they are able to carry out productive businesses in the livestock sector independently. The livestock sub-sector has a strategic role in the development of the agricultural sector, namely in efforts to strengthen food security to meet animal protein needs, empower the community's economy, and can spur regional development. The development of the livestock sub-sector as an integral part of the agricultural sector needs special attention while still paying attention to the preservation of existing resources and the environment. This development effort cannot be separated from the availability of existing resources in the development area. However, it is still not optimal, because the causal factor is that the available land is not yet optimally utilized because it is only used for one type of farming business even though it can actually be used for integrated livestock farming. Meanwhile, the beef cattle development program is faced with the problem of increasingly narrow business land due to increasing competition in land use. However, the reality shows that with increasing population density, the land available for forage for livestock is increasingly narrowing, while feed is a component and key to the success of livestock production (Putra, 2021). It is not uncommon for livestock areas to be sacrificed because of the demand for this land for the development of certain sectors such as industry and residential areas, which have greater opportunities for short-term profits (Arfa'i, 2009). Continuous land conversion occurs due to the increasing need for land such as residential areas, industry, offices, tourist attractions, roads and other infrastructure to support community development. North Lampung Regency is one of the regencies in Lampung Province which has quite large potential in developing beef cattle farming. North Lampung Regency has quite an area of land, namely 2,726 km2. According to BPS North Lampung, in 2019, the recorded area of rice fields was 19,383 ha, the area of raw rice fields was eroded to 14,973 ha by 2021 (Central Statistics Agency, 2022). North Lampung Regency is also an area with quite a large livestock population, namely 32,490 heads (Central Bureau of Statistics, 2022). To develop the Beef Cattle business in a region, various information about the potential of the region, programs and activities that have been carried out, needs to be studied and analyzed so that the existing condition of the livestock can be accurately identified, and a better strategy for developing Beef Cattle can be formulated. in the future.
