Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 outbreak rapidly spread worldwide, with a significant number of cases and deaths causing anxiety, especially among the sufferers. Biologically, males and females show different psychological responses to the events at hand. This study aimed to examine the association between gender and anxiety among COVID-19 patients.Subjects and Method: This study was a meta-analysis. The articles were obtained from databases PubMed and Scopus using keywords "Anxiety" OR "anxiety disorder" AND "COVID-19 Patients" OR "Patients with COVID-19" OR "Hospitalized" AND "Risk factors" OR "determinants" OR "Gender" OR "Factors associated". The articles included in this study were full-text with a cross-sectional design, discuss-ed the association between gender and anxiety among COVID-19 patients, published in English, studies located in Asia. The final results were presented in Adjust Odds Ratio (aOR) or Standardized Mean Difference (SMD). Data analysis was performed using Revman 5.3 software, with generic inverse variance data type for categorical outcome group (CtOG) articles and continuous data type for continue outcome group (CnOG).Results: 9 articles were analyzed, including 4 articles CtOG and 5 articles CnOG. The  forest plot of both categorical and continue outcomes showed consistent result that among COVID-19 patients  who hospitalized with mild to severe symptoms. Female patients significantly had higher anxiety event (aOR= 2.19; 95% CI= 1.60 to 2.99; p<0.001; I2= 0% and SMD= 0.35; 95% CI= 0.21 to 0.49; p<0.001; I2= 12%).Conclusion: Among COVID-19 patients, the female gender has a significantly higher risk of suffering from anxiety than the male gender. Keywords: anxiety, COVID-19Correspondence: Zuraida Zulkarnain. Abstract

Abstract

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are common in regions with high rates of anemia, particularly in low-income countries where poor nutrition is prevalent. Children attending school in these areas are most vulnerable to anemia. Both anemia and STH infections can negatively affect children's physical development, school attendance, and learning abilities. This study aims to examine the relationship between STH infections and anemia in children. A systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA guidelines were conducted. Articles were selected based on eligibility criteria defined using the PICO model: Population = Primary School Children, Intervention = STH infections, Comparison = No STH infections, Outcome = Anemia. The article search covered publications from 2002 to 2024 across databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Springer Link, Hindawi, and PLOS One. Keywords used included "STH," "Anaemia," "STH AND Children," and "STH AND Anaemia." Inclusion criteria consisted of full-text, cross-sectional studies published in English that discussed the impact of STH on anemia in school-aged children. The final results were expressed as adjusted odds ratios (aOR) from multivariate analysis. Data were analyzed using RevMan 5.4, and meta-analysis was performed on 12 articles from Africa and Asia. The results indicated that children infected with STH had significantly lower hemoglobin levels, leading to anemia (aOR = 2.23, 95% CI = 1.07 to 4.65, p = 0.03). This study demonstrates that STH infections contribute to anemia in school-aged children.

Abstract

Background: Agriculture is the most important sector in basic human needs. Farmers must improve the quality of agricultural products by using synthetic chemicals, someone who experiences pesticide poisoning will have low cholinesterase levels. This study aims to analyze pesticide exposure to hemoglobin and cholinesterase levels in farmers who use pesticides.Subjects and Method: This was a systematic review study and meta-analysis conducted with the PRISMA diagram guidelines. The search for articles was carried out taking into account the eligibility criteria defined in the PICO model. Population= farmers using pesticides, Intervention= exposed to pesticides, Comparison= not exposed to pesticides, Outcome= hemoglobin and cholinesterase levels. The article search process was carried out between 2002-2022 from the Pubmed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Springer Link, Hindawi, and Plose one databases. The keywords used were “hemoglobin”, “exposed pesticide”, “cholinesterase level”, “farmers”, “hemoglobin AND exposed pesticide”, “cholinesterase level AND farmers”, “hemoglobin AND farmers”. The inclusion criteria in this study were the full text of a cross-sectional study, discussing pesticide exposure to hemoglobin and cholinesterase levels in farmers using pesticides, published in English. Final results are presented in the mean SD of the multivariate analysis. Data analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4 software. Results: A meta-analysis was conducted on 13 articles originating from America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. The results of the meta-analysis showed that farmers exposed to pesticides experienced a decrease in hemoglobin, but it was not statistically significant (SMD= -0.28; 95% CI= -1.10 to 0.54; p=0.500). Pesticide exposure reduced cholinesterase levels in farmers using pesticides, the results were statistically significant (SMD= -2.48; 95% CI= -3.68 to -1.27; p<0.001).Conclusion: The results of the meta-analysis showed that pesticide exposure decreased hemoglobin and cholinesterase levels in farmers using pesticides. Abstract

Abstract

Tinea unguium is a type of superficial mycosis that attacks the nail plate as a result of dermatophyte infection. This study aimed to identify the fungal genera responsible for tinea unguium in the toenails of farmers in Baros Hamlet, Tirtohargo Village, Kretek District, Bantul Regency. Thirteen nail samples were examined microscopically with 20 % KOH and Lactophenol Cotton Blue preparations, and cultured on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA). Three fungal genera were identified: Aspergillus (9 isolates), Penicillium (3 isolates) and Trichophyton (1 isolate). Hence, the dermatophyte causing tinea unguium in these farmers’ feet was Trichophyton sp. Microscopic observations revealed conidiophores, vesicles, phialides, and conidia consistent with the morphological characteristics of each genus. These results underscore the need for education on preventative measures, such as wearing appropriate footwear, maintaining foot hygiene, and increasing farmers’ awareness of the risk of fungal infection.
