Abstract

This study examines two contrasting cases: the remote indigenous communities on Mentawai and Rupat Islands (Riau), where the majority of the original populations have formally adopted Christianity and Buddhism as their religious identities. The purpose of this research is to explore how indigenous belief systems are preserved amidst the pressures for religious conformity and to analyze the psychological preferences of remote indigenous communities when choosing one of the state-recognized religions. This study employs a case study design, focusing on remote indigenous communities in Rupat Kepulauan (the Akit people) and Mentawai Island (the Mentawai people). The findings reveal that remote indigenous communities in the Mentawai Islands are generally open to migrants, engage in cross-cultural communication, and experience social change through processes of acculturation, assimilation, and integration. Although a small segment continues to maintain ancestral beliefs exclusively, no discrimination is evident against them. Government efforts to integrate remote indigenous communities with mainstream society are conducted through persuasive empowerment strategies. The results highlight the importance of establishing formal legal recognition for the indigenous belief systems of remote communities.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an Islamic counseling model of Mujadalah Ahsan to overcome mental health problems (mental illness) in final year students of the Islamic Education Counseling Guidance Study Program (BKPI) at State Islamic Religious Universities (PTKIN) in Sumatra. Final-year BKPI students often face academic, social, and personal pressures that can trigger mental health disorders. The Mujadalah Ahsan model proposed in this study integrates Islamic counseling principles with a good and wise communication approach (ahsanu mujadalah), by the teachings of the Qur'an. The research method used is research and development (R&D), which involves needs analysis, model development, validation test by experts, and implementation in the field. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and questionnaires distributed to students and BKPI supervisors at PTKIN. The results showed that the Mujadalah Ahsan Islamic counseling model is effective in helping students overcome problems of anxiety, depression, and academic pressure through a harmonious spiritual and psychological approach. This model also contributes to developing Islamic counseling theory and practice that is more relevant in the context of Islamic higher education and enriching alternative approaches in dealing with mental health in students. Thus, this model is hoped to be implemented more widely in various PTKIN in Indonesia to support students' mental well-being.

Abstract

This study examines the contribution of Francis Bacon's epistemological thinking to the development of modern science and its relevance to the foundation of social science, especially in Social Studies education. The main issue of this research departs from the scientific paradigm shift from the speculative scholastic tradition to a scientific approach based on observation and empirical experience. By using qualitative methods through literature study and historical-philosophical analysis, this research traces how Bacon's inductive method shapes a scientific mindset that is rational, objective, and systematic. The results show that Bacon's principle of empiricism is not only the basis for natural sciences, but also provides a methodological framework for modern social studies. His concept of idola mentis emphasizes the importance of freeing the mind from bias and prejudice in the process of acquiring scientific knowledge. Bacon's thinking is also relevant in the context of modern education through the application of inquiry-based and experiential learning models that encourage students' critical and reflective thinking skills. Although this research is conceptual in nature, the results open new directions for empirical studies that examine the application of Bacon's principles of empiricism in contemporary social research and pedagogy. Thus, Bacon's intellectual legacy affirms the importance of balance between rationality, empirical experience, and moral responsibility in building the progress of science and civilization.

Abstract

Mental health is an important aspect in the development of santri who live in a pesantren environment that is full of academic, social, and emotional pressures. This study aims to develop and test the effectiveness of the Emotional Wellness Counseling (EWC) based Counseling Guidance Program as an effort to improve the emotional well-being of students in West Sumatra pesantren. The method used is Research and Development (R&D) with the Mantap (Steady, Precise, Accurate, Productive) model which includes needs analysis, product development, expert validation, practicality test, effectiveness test, and dissemination. A total of 78 students from three pesantren were selected using simple random sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using descriptive statistics f, feasibility validation, and pretest-posttest comparison. The results of expert validation showed that the EWC module was in the very feasible category (87-91%), while the practicality test by students and ustadz/ustadzah was in the very practical category (86-94%). The effectiveness test shows a significant increase in the ability of emotion regulation and emotional well-being of santri with an average N-Gain value of 0.64 (medium-high category) and an effect size of 0.81 which shows a large effect compared to the control class (N-Gain 0.32). The integration of Islamic values and Minangkabau cultural wisdom in the module strengthens the relevance and acceptance of the program in the pesantren environment. These findings confirm that EWC is effective and feasible to implement as an innovation in counseling services to strengthen the mental health of santri holistically.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics and dilemmas faced by Pesantren Salafiyah in West Sumatra in maintaining traditional Islamic education amidst the currents of modernization and globalization. The research approach used is a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The research subjects included kiai, teachers or ustadz, santri, almuni, and the surrounding community from several pesantren salafiyah, namely Pesantren Ashhabul Yamin Lasi in Agam Regency, Pesantren al-Manaar Batuampar in Lima Puluh Kota, MTI III Kampung Candung, MTI Tengku Tuah in Lima Puluh Kota, Pondok, and MTI Batang Kabung. The study’s results indicate that pesantren salafiyah play an important role in preserving the treasures of classical Islamic knowledge by teaching “kitab kuning” (classical Islamic texts) using traditional methods such as bandongan, sorogan, and halaqah. However, pesantren faces complex challenges, including changes in educational policies, limited resources, leadership renewal, and public perceptions of the relevance of pesantren graduates in the modern world. Nevertheless, many pesantren demonstrate adaptive capabilities through selective integration of modern elements, such as the addition of a general curriculum, strengthened management, and the use of learning technology, without abandoning their scholarly identity. The principle of "al-muhafazhah 'ala al-qadim al-shalih wa al-akhdz bi al-jadid al-ashlah" (religious guidance, the guidance of the righteous) serves as the basis for maintaining a balance between tradition and innovation. With wise and collaborative management, pesantren salafiyah has the potential to become models of relevant and sustainable Islamic education.
