Abstract

This study presents a contrastive phonological analysis of consonant sounds between English and the Lamaholot language, focusing on the Adonara Timur dialect spoken in Desa Riawale. The study aims to examine the articulatory and distributive differences in consonant phonemes and their implications for English pronunciation acquisition by Lamaholot speakers. Employing a comparative phonetic methodology, data were gathered through systematic linguistic observations and recordings of native speakers. Findings indicate that several English fricatives (/v/, /θ/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/) and affricates (/ʧ/, /ʤ/) are absent from the Lamaholot consonant inventory, posing potential challenges for learners in accurately pronouncing English. Meanwhile, common consonants such as bilabial stops and nasals exhibit varying distribution patterns across both languages. The bilingual and multilingual competence of Lamaholot speakers appears to mitigate some pronunciation difficulties. Pedagogical implications include recommending phonetic and dual-language instructional approaches, supplemented by audiolingual techniques, to effectively address learners’ specific phonological challenges. This study enriches applied linguistics by offering targeted strategies for second language teaching tailored to speakers of minority indigenous languages.

Abstract

English vowels consist of five letters that have different pronunciations (sounds) in English words. There are 20 vowel sounds and 24 consonant sounds in English. It is a challenge for English teachers to teach English learners the concept of reading English words. English vowels with the symbols a, i, u, e, and o have different pronunciations when they are positioned between consonants in the word CVC and when the word CVC is added by the letter e in the word CVCe. Therefore, this paper analyzed the influence of the letter e (which is referred to as magic e) in the pronunciation of English vowel sounds. This research is qualitative research with documentation study methods to analyze and explain how the vowel sounds are pronounced in CVC and CVCe words so that English reading teaching steps are obtained that are easy to understand. The results showed that English vowels were pronounced as short vowel sounds in CVC words and pronounced as long vowel sounds in CVCe words. The steps to teach magic e that can be applied are to repeat the short vowel sound material, introduce the concept of sounds and letters, introduce the concept of short and long vowel sounds, read two words similar in the concept of CVC and CVCe, and practice reading the word CVCe regularly.

Abstract

Young generations, usually speak two or more languages for their communication (Sukrisna, 2019). Based on this phenomenon, we can say that our young generations use code-switching and code-mixing in their utterances. It is interesting to discuss the types of code choices used and to know the reasons to switch or mix from one language to another. A qualitative method was used to gather and analyze explanatory data. The data were analyzed by using Hoffman's theory which classified code choice into code-switching and code-mixing and also categorized the reasons for using code choice into seven reasons. The research can be concluded that types of code-switching used in “Boy William Youtube Channel: Geledah Isi Lemari Di Dalamnya Tas Branded Semua!” are Intra-sentential Switching, Inter-sentential Switching, and Tag Switching. Meanwhile, types of code-mixing found are Intra-sentential Mixing and Intra-lexical Code-mixing. There are also found several reasons for using Code-mixing and Code-switching in conversation. The reasons are talking about a particular topic, being emphatic about something (expressing solidarity), interjection (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors), repetition used for clarification, the intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor, and expressing group identity. Keywords: Code-switching, Code-mixing, Sociolinguistics

Abstract

The novel "Woman at Point Zero" is a novel that predominantly draws on psychological elements. The purpose of this study is to describe: (1) the relationship between theme and character through action, (2) the relationship between theme and character's thoughts, and (3) the relationship between theme and character's feelings. This study uses a qualitative approach. The method used is descriptive analysis. The data consists of linguistic units such as sentences, phrases, and paragraphs related to character's actions, thoughts, and feelings. The data source is the novel "Woman at Point Zero," published by the Obor Indonesia Foundation in 2006. The conclusion of this study is that the theme influenced by action determines humans as supreme beings, the theme influenced by dominant thoughts determines humans as social beings, and the theme's relationship with feelings determines humans as individual beings. This novel depicts the dark side faced by Egyptian women amidst Arab culture steeped in patriarchal values. Women still experience unequal rights and never receive the same rights as men. As in Arab societies, patriarchal culture is one of the foundations of debate over women's status in society, and it continues to generate conflict. The lack of guaranteed women's rights, political freedom, and the hierarchical constraints of husbands leave women disadvantaged in all aspects of life, experiencing discrimination, violence, and poverty.

Abstract

Social media, especially Instagram, plays a crucial role in digital tourism promotion by serving as a medium for cultural expression. Through visual and textual content, these platforms play a crucial role in influencing audience perceptions of cultural values, especially in tourism campaigns such as Wonderful Indonesia. This study examined the use of Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory of icon, index, and symbol in analyzing Balinese cultural representations featured in the Wonderful Indonesia Instagram advertisements. The study aims to identify sign types and the sign meaning. Using a qualitative descriptive method, five cultural themes Kuningan Day, Kecak Dance, Legong Dance, Melukat, and the Pelebon Ceremony were analyzed through textual and visual content from posts published between 2023 and 2024. The findings revealed that a total of 62 signs were identified, consisting of approximately 32 symbolic signs, 17 indexical signs, and 15 iconic signs. Symbolic signs appear consistently, reflecting their role in conveying Balinese values, rituals, and spirituality. Indexical signs refer to direct cultural elements, while iconic signs represent visual resemblance. Then focused on the sign meanings in each cultural element to gain a deeper understanding of the values, rituals, and spiritual significance conveyed through the advertisements.
