Abstract

This study aims to describe translation ideology in translating cultural words of the “Educated” memoir by Tara Westover. The research method is descriptive qualitative. The data taken are in the form of words or phrases related to cultural words in “Part One” of “Educated” by Tara Westover and its translation. This article analysed the theories of cultural categories by Newmark (1988), translation methods by Molina & Albir (2002), and translation ideology by Venuti (1995) . The research finding demonstrates four categories of cultural words in the memoir, such as ecology, material culture (artifact), social culture, and organization, custom and ideas. Furthermore, translation techniques applied by the translator were borrowing, amplification, description, adaptation, literal translation, established equivalent, and calque. The findings of this research show that the most dominant technique used in this memoir is borrowing (64%). In terms of translation idelogy, the findings of this study indicate that foreignization is more prevalent than domestication. The research result can provide insights to EFL learners, especially in translation materials, to be more careful in translating cultural words because of the cultural barriers between the SL and TL. Moreover, this study contributes to developing cultural and linguistic studies by exploring domestication and foreignization ideologies in translating English literary works into Indonesian.

Abstract

This article discusses a semantic analysis of the denotative and connotative meanings in three poems by Langston Hughes: "Dreams," "Mother to Son," and "Harlem." The research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with the theoretical framework of meaning by Geoffrey Leech (1981) and the semiotic approach of Daniel Chandler (2007). The analysis results show that each poem not only conveys individual aspirations and challenges but also represents the collective condition of marginalized communities. The connotative meanings of words and metaphors in the poems serve as a form of resistance to social oppression, implying resilience and emotional depth rooted in a history of struggle. Thus, this study demonstrates that literary works are not only a medium for artistic expression but also an instrument that responds to social injustice and inspires collective awareness in the fight for freedom.

Abstract

This article examines the quest for liberation by Palestinians amidst Israel's assault on the Gaza Strip from October 2023 to December 2023, as documented in Atef Abu Saif's diary, "Don't Look Left: A Diary of Genocide." the diary showed that Palestine experiences kinds of oppression during Israel’s attack. The method used is the descriptive analysis with the theory of Kuntowijoyo's prophetic analysis. There are two kinds of liberation proposed by Kuntowijoyo: external liberation and internal liberation. However, the finding revealed that the Palestinians were only struggling for external liberation. The external liberation that is depicted in Atef's diary is the liberation efforts of Palestinians from some oppressions executed by Israel, such as political oppression, cultural oppression, and economic oppression. The prophetic analysis powerfully indicates the interconnected between religion and social issues. The examination of Atef’s diary also illustrates that the socioeconomic issues confronting Palestine now are intricately linked to the essence of prophecy, asserting that all individuals possess the inherent right to liberation from any form of oppression, irrespective of race, religion, or nationality. Moreover, the Atef's diary illustrates the reality of Palestinian existence under Israeli aggression and offers further insight into war literature grounded on life writing.

Abstract

This study examines cultural representations in two English books used by pesantren educational institutions, the English Conversation Club (ECC) and the English Learners Association (ELA) at Pesantren Darussalam Blokagung. This study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive approach. Data collection was conducted through content analysis and interviews. Informant sources include textbook writers and English course instructors. In contrast, the data analysis used Miles and Huberman's data reduction, data analysis, and inference simulation techniques. The results showed that the textbook contained four cultural values: tolerance, equality, justice, and democracy. The value of tolerance is shown in the interaction between people from different cultures. The value of equality is shown in the inclusive delivery of materials. Both informative texts, conversations, and opinion writing exercises demonstrate fairness, and texts that emphasize balance in decision-making demonstrate a democratic approach. Textbooks do two things: they help students learn the language and 3protect the culture of boarding schools around the world. To help students become confident and culturally sensitive communicators in the era of globalization, this study suggests the creation of relevant teaching materials.

The formal curriculum aligns with the national school system, while the informal one encompasses English courses progressing from basic to advanced levels, an English language dormitory, and extracurriculars like news reading, storytelling, debate, and public speaking. The research concludes that Pesantren Darussalam effectively integrates English education to complement formal schooling. Yet, to enhance students' English skills and local awareness, ELT materials are needed to be tailored to the Pesantren context. Abstract

The discussions of English textbooks are dominantly only concerned with the product, value and representation of textbooks without giving intention to the production process. This present study discusses the production process of English textbooks produced by Indonesia Islamic Institution (Pesantren MS) and the content of English textbooks. This research adopts a qualitative method; primary data were gathered through in-depth interviews with some interviewees, the Pesantren leader, and the authors of the books to get information about the production process and the materials selected for the textbook. Furthermore, the data were also gathered from the content of six English textbooks, which were scrutinized based on Pesantren elements. The research findings demonstrate that the production of the textbooks was based on two reasons, namely Pesantren's interest and the teacher's interest in providing English materials and curriculum for English language teaching in Pesantren. However, the content of the textbook was still lacking in representing Pesantren content; only four items were found, namely pictures of Kyai (Pesantren leader), mosques, the teaching of classical books and student activities. Moreover, in enhancing intercultural communication among students, the study suggested creatively negotiating the locality interest in the English learning process through content integration in teaching materials and textbooks, teaching methodology, and adjustment of the curriculum in Pesantren. Furthermore, analyzing the English textbook produced by Pesantren MS aims to propel Pesantren towards better negotiating, integrating, and contributing of English textbook in the development of English teaching and learning and its curriculum among Pesantren.
