Abstract

The growth of the hotel business in Yogyakarta is currently increasing up. Based on data from the Association of Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants, the total of new hotels to be built in Yogyakarta reaches 110 hotels. With reference to these growth figures, hospitality management is currently not only focused on providing accommodation, but also going further to selling other hotel products, such as food and beverages. This research took a case study about the product innovation of Neo + Awana Hotel Yogyakarta, with a developing event called "Fun Food Barbeque". The method used is descriptive qualitative with primary data collection using participant observation and interviews. The results shows that the first implementation of the Barbeque Fun Food event is not optimal, because guests are not interested in western food and also the menu has many things to offer. With the changing innovation of barbecue products into fusion food with a menu that is a blend of Indonesian food with western food, the Fun Food Barbeque event becomes more interesting.

Using qualitative methods, data obtained through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, in two different locations, in Tumbang Koling and Ramang Village. Sacred symbols on its religious architecture include Sapundu and Sandong. A sapundu manifests in the form of a human or animal figure, regarding to the personification of the ancestral spirit. It shows the way for the soul towards Lewu Tatau. Meanwhile, Sandong is a secondary burial coffin to put the ancestral bones. The construction and architecture should concern on foundation, size, height, carvings, and ornaments. This local wisdom is potential to be developed as a cultural tourism attraction. However, the sacredness of the Tiwah Feast must be maintained and preserved from cultural commercialization and commodification issues.

Abstract

Travelers seeking authentic interactions with nature and culture are increasingly interested in destinations managed by the local community. Amidst the rising number of communities offering similar traveling experiences, operators seek a way to promote their destination and its distinctiveness. One of the ways to accentuate the particularity and the status of a tourist spot is by doing an online promotion in English, and artificial intelligence seems to open a window for its possibilities. This research aims to reveal how residents perceive the use of AI, including ChatGPT, in promoting their community-based tourist destinations. Residents participating in the research were invited to express their feelings and reactions towards AI-generated texts promoting a community-managed destination in the area they reside. Their reactions revealed three states of emotion: insecurity, uncertainty, and inauthenticity. They also reported an inability to make an informed decision due to a lack of key knowledge and skills, rendering the use of AI unproductive.

Abstract

Kemiriombo, a hamlet in Gerbosari Village, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, is known for its diversity of spices (empon-empon) cultivated and processed by the local community. This area has significant potential for developing tourism based on local culture and traditions, but the tourism narrative has not been optimally managed. This study aims to explore the potential of storytelling as a strategy for developing tourist destinations in Kemiriombo. The methods used include observation, interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), surveys, and community participation to understand the needs and expectations of the local community. The study found that Kemiriombo has tourism potential such as the processing of empon-empon at Rumah Jamu Menoreh, local cultural arts such as Jathilan, Gejog Lesung, and Karawitan, as well as culinary traditions like Sega Brongsong and Legondo. The 5W1H technique (Who, What, When, Where, Why, How) was applied in the storytelling analysis to produce engaging narratives that can promote local cultural identity. Storytelling plays a crucial role in introducing local products and traditions, enhancing tourist attraction, and preserving community culture. Through the development of strong narratives, Kemiriombo is expected to become a tourist destination that offers not only visual experiences but also emotional and social dimensions for visitors. The integration of local traditions and storytelling innovation is expected to positively impact the welfare of the local community.

Abstract

The construction of Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) has triggered rapid, large-scale development in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, posing significant risks to the local identity of the adjacent Glagah Beach Tourism Area. This study evaluates the area's genius loci, or spirit of place, to support sustainable, place-based planning. A qualitative approach, including systematic observation and in-depth interviews, was employed. The Genius Loci Model was used to identify the elements that define Glagah's character. Findings reveal that Glagah's genius loci is fragmented, with the lagoon exhibiting a tranquil, positive identity and the coastline reflecting neglect and a negative image. The research also highlights spatial layering, as a contemporary commercial landscape interacts with a historical, sacred space linked to Pakualaman heritage. Glagah's unique physical features, especially its lagoon and breakwater, distinguish it from other regional beaches. The results indicate that a generic, top-down tourism strategy is insufficient. Instead, the complexity of Glagah's identity requires a dual management strategy: one to preserve and enhance the lagoon's positive attributes and sacred heritage, and another to address coastline degradation. This study provides a place-based framework for managing development pressures and protecting a distinctive cultural landscape.

Abstract

Abstract

Tourism in the Parangkusumo Beach area of Yogyakarta presents positive opportunities and negative social challenges. This study reviews how the growth of tourism, alongside local cultural practices, has coincided with the emergence of prostitution in the area, creating a complex dilemma for the community and policymakers. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research draws on literature, observation, and documentation to examine the interplay between tourism development, local regulations enforcement, and various actors' political interests. The findings indicate that while prostitution provides economic benefits for marginalized local people, it also conflicts with legal norms and is influenced by political dynamics and law enforcement practices. This paper discusses the implications of these findings for regional policy and community welfare.
