Abstract

Students majoring in communication believe that their nervousness when speaking will affect their lives. It will either limit their employment opportunities or cause them to perform poorly at work. In the digital era, English speaking is very important to communicate with other members of an organization. There are limited discussions about speaking anxiety in ESP class and students majoring in communication studies are expected to convey their messages persuasively in an organization. So, descriptive qualitative research was utilized by the researcher to describe speaking anxiety in ESP class; Types of Speaking Anxiety, Factors of Speaking Anxiety, Reducing Speaking Anxiety. Semi-structured interviews and observations were the sources in this study with 19 students involved. Three natural phenomena in speaking anxiety or research problems in speaking anxiety were analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results showed that Communication Apprehension, Fear of Negative Acceptance, and Test Anxiety existed among the students in speaking class. They can overcome it using YouTube videos as references and community supports (teacher and close-friends). This study also found that students majoring in communication studies experience trait anxiety (one person), state anxiety (ten students), and situation-specific anxiety (eight students). Based on this result, further researchers related to speaking anxiety are to revise the approach using the mixed method in ESP class. These suggestions are to enrich speaking anxiety for English Specific Purposes, such as midwife students and economic students.

Abstract

Speaking anxiety is a feeling of fear about what is to come when speaking. Students' conditions may trigger excessive anxiety that can make students struggle to move and speak in front of the public. The purposes of this study are to determine the level of business administration students’ speaking anxiety at UNISBA Blitar and to investigate the most dominant speaking anxiety in ESP class. This study utilizes descriptive quantitative with thirty-three questionnaires as a research instrument distributed to second-semester of Business Administration students of UNISBA. The questionnaires were then analyzed and categorized into responses and speaking anxiety levels. Once the data of Business Administration students’ speaking anxiety level had been collected, the researcher calculated the average and the percentage of the data and categorized them into three types of speaking anxiety in the classroom. In addition, the researcher utilized a five-point Likert scale, discovering two students experienced an anxiety level, three students experienced a relaxed level, and twenty-five students were mildly anxious. The most dominant speaking anxiety type was Test Anxiety with a total of 450 items (45.45%), followed by Communication Apprehension (33.34%), and students’ fear of negative evaluation as the lowest (21.21%). In the end, the future researcher interested in conducting similar research about speaking anxiety is expected to use a different number of participants and research methodology to enrich the knowledge about speaking anxiety in higher education.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is essential to help students learn English. However, many elementary students struggle with having sufficient vocabulary. This classroom action research aims to improve elementary students' vocabulary mastery through the PFAR-based flipped classroom. PFAR, which stands for Plan, Flip, Assess, and Reflect, is a recent development of flipped classroom for teaching English to young learners. The participants of this study included 15 grade VI students from an Islamic elementary school. The data were collected using tests, observations, and interviews. The findings revealed that the PFAR-based flipped classroom enhanced the students' vocabulary mastery. This improvement was made possible by active learning during vocabulary lessons. The students learned vocabulary through videos, pictures, and academic games, both online and in face-to-face classes. The results of the tests showed that the students were able to achieve the learning objectives, namely (1) understanding the meaning of certain vocabulary; (2) writing certain vocabulary with correct spelling; and (3) applying certain vocabulary in simple sentences. All the students yielded a mean score of more than 70 on five vocabulary tests. In addition, they became more active during the lessons and confirmed that the entire learning process was more attractive. All of this evidence suggests that this research was successful in improving students' vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

Many teachers use YouTube as an internet-based application to share their areas of expertise, such as sharing writing skills, English pronunciation, English speaking, and so on. In this research, the lecturer uses YouTube as an audiovisual application to help Public Administration students learn English speaking. This research fills the gap of previous research in higher education, precisely about learning to support their careers in the near future. This research aims to understand YouTube as a medium for speaking English based on Public Administration students’ perceptions in class. Therefore, the qualitative method was ideal to answer the purpose of the research. This study involved 15 students, and the researcher served as the primary instrument because of his capacity to provide clarity about the phenomenon utilizing questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The finding showed that YouTube was the right tool to support their speaking skill. YouTube enhances students’ understanding of Public Interest vocabulary. However, a stable internet connection was the most common problem in learning. Furthermore, there must be similar research in the Department of Elementary School Teacher Education to fill the gap in this research and enrich the understanding of English-speaking skills.

Abstract

In the educational sphere, technology has brought about significant changes, prompting English teachers to adopt innovative digital solutions to enhance their teaching practices. Quizizz, a dynamic and engaging platform, is one such tool that has gained considerable attention in educational settings. This study explores students' perceptions of Quizizz at Islamic University Balitar, using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) as a framework. Researchers gather insights through customized interviews and observations, derived from previous research interviews. This tailored approach allows for a more relevant investigation into students' experiences with Quizizz. Once the data collection process is completed, the researcher analyzes the data using methods such as data condensation, data display, and coding. The findings suggest that students generally hold a positive attitude towards Quizizz. They recognize its capacity to augment their learning experiences, making studying more interactive and enjoyable. However, the investigation also reveals several challenges. For instance, unreliable internet connectivity and insufficient technological resources emerge as significant issues. These challenges can hinder the effective use of Quizizz and other digital learning tools. The study recommends that further research in different ESP contexts, such as management studies, could provide a deeper understanding of Quizizz among students. By conducting similar studies in various educational settings, researchers can gain a more comprehensive insight into the impact and effectiveness of Quizizz.

Abstract

The integration of audio-visual elements in educational resources has garnered significant interest, given their potential to enhance language learning efficiency. This study delves into the innovative use of such audio-visual tools, specifically YouTube, in speaking classes for students from non-English departments. The shift from conventional in-class language learning to online platforms, a change accelerated by the global Covid-19 pandemic, has revolutionized learning methodologies. This research offers a glimpse into the perspectives of ten Informatics Engineering students on utilizing YouTube videos for English language learning outside the traditional classroom setting. Employing a qualitative research methodology, the investigators conducted comprehensive interviews and classroom observations. The initial phase of data analysis involved data reduction, which was subsequently followed by further data condensation and conclusion derivation. The findings suggest that the majority of participants agreed on the significant influence of YouTube on their speaking class. Despite a handful of students facing network-related challenges, the study underscored that this web-based platform served as a valuable, cost-free supplementary resource for the speaking class.
